LUCILLE HELEN CHRISTENSEN, 91, of Oelwein (& formerly of Atlantic), died Tue., Dec. 29th, at the Oelwein Health Care Center. Funeral services for LUCILLE CHRISTENSEN will be held 2:30-p.m. Sat., Jan. 2nd, in the chapel at the Hockenberry Family Care Funeral Home in Atlantic.

Visitation will take place from 1:30-to 2:30-p.m. Saturday, at the funeral home.

Burial will be in the Atlantic Cemetery.

LUCILLE CHRISTENSEN is survived by:

Her son – Dennis Dale (Sue) Christensen.

Her daughter – Patricia (Doug) McConnelee.

LEIGH K. DAVIS, 58, of Carroll, died Tue., Dec. 29th, at Methodist Hospital in Des Moines. Funeral services for LEIGH DAVIS will be held 10:30-a.m. Sat., Jan. 2nd, at the United Methodist Church in Carroll. Ohde-Twit Funeral Home in Carroll has the arrangements.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 4-until 6-pm Fri., Jan. 1st. Visitation also be held one-hour prior to the service (9:30-a.m.) Saturday, at the United Methodist Church in Carroll.

Burial will be in the Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Carroll.

LEIGH DAVIS is survived by his:

Wife – Deb Davis, of Carroll.

Sons – Michael Davis, of Bremerton, WA., & Stephen Davis, of Colorado Springs, Co.

His parents – Lynn and Ellen Davis, of Lincoln, NE.

His brothers – Doug Davis, of Prattville, AL; Mark Davis, of Lincoln, NE.

His sister – Robin Stone, of Lake City, MN

1 granddaughter, and his mother-in-law, Eilen Wirtz, of Carroll.

Union County man arrested on drug charges in Adams County

Sheriff’s officials in Adams County say a man from Union County was arrested Wednesday night, on drug charges. 18-year old Dyrrel Mali Thornton Culbertson, of Creston, was arrested at around 8:05-p.m. following a traffic stop, during which deputies noticed a strong odor of marijuana. A search of the vehicle resulted in the discovery of a large amount of marijuana in the trunk.

Culbertson was charged with Possession of Marijuana, Intent to Distribute, and a Tax Drug Stamp violation. He was being held in the Adams County Jail on $7,000 bond.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — The Iowa State Patrol says releasing the name of a trooper and details about his use of force during an arrest would be unfair to the suspect he injured. The patrol refused to explain how a trooper’s rifle injured Shanne Arre during a June arrest following a police chase in Plymouth County. The Associated Press asked the State Patrol for further explanation earlier this month.

BURLINGTON, Iowa (AP) — A judge has granted another trial delay for a man accused of killing his 3-week-old son in southeast Iowa. Twenty-three-year-old Randall Payne’s trial is now scheduled to begin in May. It had been slated to begin next week. Payne was arrested at his Burlington home last May in the 2014 death of Carter Payne.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — A plea agreement calls for a retired National Park Service officials to serve probation and publicly apologize to tribes for stealing the remains of their ancestors from a museum he managed. The agreement also recommends former Effigy Mounds National Monument superintendent Thomas Munson pay $108,000 in restitution. Munson is expected to plead guilty to embezzlement next week and receive his sentence.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — A state engineer fired in 2014 for giving sexually inappropriate buttons to a female co-worker will be reinstated with $173,000 in back pay after successfully appealing his termination. Bruce Flippin will return Monday to the job with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, two years after the incident that prompted his firing. An administrative law judge has concluded Flippin violated DNR work rules, but that termination wasn’t justified.

No. 11 Iowa State beats Coppin State 104-84

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Abdel Nader led six players in double figures with 21 points and 11th-ranked Iowa State beat Coppin State 104-84 on Wednesday night in its final tune-up for Big 12 play. Deonte Burton scored 17 points for the Cyclones (11-1), who open their conference schedule at No. 3 Oklahoma on Saturday.

Iowa State went ahead by 21 points midway through the first half and won by at least 20 for the sixth time. Monte Morris had 10 points with 11 assists for his fourth double-double of the year for the Cyclones. Josh Treadwell had 21 for Coppin State (2-13), which lost its 11th straight.

Northern Iowa routs Bradley 80-44 in MVC opener

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — Jeremy Morgan scored 18 points and Northern Iowa routed Bradley 80-44 in the Missouri Valley Conference opener for both schools on Wednesday night. Northern Iowa (9-5, 1-0) has won 13-straight conference home games dating back to the 2013-14 season. Its 36-point win set a conference record for largest margin of victory.

Morgan was 6 of 8 from the floor and had six rebounds and four assists. Bennett Koch scored 15 points, and Paul Jesperson and Klint Carlson added 12 apiece for Northern Iowa. Matt Bohannon chipped in 11 points with three 3-pointers. Scottie James scored nine points to lead Bradley (2-12, 0-1). The Braves shot 33 percent from the field, scored a season-low 44 points, and have lost three straight.

It was tied at 9-all five minutes into the game. The Panthers used a 13-0 run and led 22-9 midway through the first half and cruised from there.

Bluffs man wanted for Dec. 10th bank robbery is arrested

A western Iowa man wanted in connection with the Dec. 10th robbery of the Frontier Savings Bank in Council Bluffs, was arrested late Wednesday afternoon by Police in Lincoln, NE.  46-year old Dwight Rogers, of Council Bluffs, was arrested without incident on a Council Bluffs Police Department warrant for Robbery in the 1st  Degree. Rogers was being held at the Lincoln Police Department’s Jail, pending extradition back to Iowa.

Rogers is alleged to have entered the bank located at 509 S. 23rd Avenue in Council Bluffs, at around 4:40-p.m on Dec. 10th.  As he approached the female bank teller Rogers asked “Are you all ready for Christmas”? At that point, he allegedly handed the teller a hand written note which demanded all of their money, and said not to set off any alarms. Rogers also produced what appeared to be a small caliber handgun and laid the weapon down with his right hand on the counter towards the teller.

He escaped on foot from the bank carrying a drawstring-type bag with an undetermined amount of U.S. currency.

MARY STENDER, 72, of Massena, died Wednesday, December 30th, at the Bellevue Medical Center in Bellevue, Nebraska. A Funeral Mass for MARY STENDER will be held 10-a.m. Saturday, January 2nd, at the St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Massena. The Steen Funeral Home of Massena is in charge of arrangements.

Visitation, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Massena, will be held on Friday, January 1st, from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m., with the family to greet friends from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. A prayer service will also be held on Friday at 5:00 p.m., at the St. Patrick’s Catholic Church.

Online condolences may be left to the family at www.steenfunerals.com.

Burial will be in the Victoria Township Cemetery in Massena. A luncheon will be held at the church following the burial.
