The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says some 10-thousand boat owners are running out of time to register the hull identification number of their boats. D-N-R Boating Law Administrator, Susan Stocker, says the U-S Coast Guard found the numbers from the manufacturers did not meet regulations. “Recently the states have been tasked with making sure and verifying that these boats to have the 12-digit hull identification numbers, H-I-N’s. And so, we’re just trying to give a heads up to the boat owners that still need to register their HINS before they want to register it,”
Stocker says. She says boat owners should have gotten notice. “We’ve sent them an affidavit,” Stocker says, “and so what they do is they fill it out and either do a pencil rubbing or take a photography of their hull identification number to verify it. And then they can either mail it in, email it in or fax it in, and then we’ll process it.” Boat owners will need to verify the H-I-N prior to April 30th in order to renew their boat registration.
Stocker says any boat owner has to register their boat by the deadline or they face a five dollar penalty. Stocker says many boaters are probably getting the itch to get out on the water, and need to get the verification and registration complete. “As the weather does get warmer and everybody will want to get out on the water, we want to be sure they are able to do that by doing a little bit of paperwork before it gets too nice,” Stocker says.
Stocker says there are around 235-thousand boats registered in the state. for more information on the boat registration, go to the D-N-R’s website at: www.iowadnr.gov.

Here is the latest Iowa news from The Associated Press
COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) — Council Bluffs officials are making plans to document the history of an historic former elementary school before it is demolished. The Daily Nonpareil reports the city council will decide Monday whether to support an agreement with the Iowa State Historic Preservation about the former Walnut Grove Elementary School. The 1926 building is eligible for the National Register of Historic Places, so the city must take additional steps before demolition.
DUBUQUE, Iowa (AP) — Local emergency managers are practicing tweeting and updating their statuses to make sure they will be prepared to use social media sites like Twitter and Facebook to share information in a disaster. Dubuque County Emergency Management Director Tom Berger tells the Telegraph Herald he is looking at setting up social media pages for his agency.
SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) — Crews continue working to clean up a spill of roughly 30,000 gallons of gasoline in northwest Iowa. The Sioux City Journal reports workers from Magellan Pipeline and contractors hired to help with the cleanup have been working since the spill happened Friday morning.
MOLINE, Ill. (AP) — Tyonna Snow recorded her second straight double-double with 17 points and a career-high 15 rebounds and Number 3 seed Missouri State won its 10th Missouri Valley Conference Tournament with a 71-58 victory over top-seeded Northern Iowa on Sunday to advance to the NCAA Tournament. Regular-season MVC champion Northern Iowa was led by Madison Weekly with 17 points and Sharnae Lamar’s 16.
The Hawkeye men are heading to Brooklyn, New York as seventh seed in the Southeast Regional to face tenth seed Temple Friday in the first round of the N-C-A-A Basketball Tournament. Iowa Coach Fran McCaffery knows Temple very well. “Temple is a terrific program, Fran Duffy has built a great program there. He knows what he is doing, he’s been successful for a number of years,” McCaffery says. “He’s a very good friend of mine. I have tremendous respect for him and the job he has done, they’ll challenge us in every way.”
Iowa had a late season skid, but the players say they are together and will be ready to play. McCaffery says that is critical, and he’s not surprised they would say that, especially the seniors. “They’ve been together from the beginning, it’s been an interesting journey. Not just this year — but you go back to when they got here. They were very much a part of building a consistent winner,” McCaffery says. He says the team has battled through a lot this season.
“We’ve had winning streaks, we’ve had losing streakes, but they have remained together. We have stuck with those guys because we know the character that they have, they talent that they have,” McCaffery says. “We just have to make sure in this setting you take care of rebounding, you take care of the basketball, you move the ball. You give your team every chance to win the game.”
The Hawkeyes had been touted at one point as possibly being a high seed and playing in Des Moines, but that fell away with the losing skid, and a first-round loss in the Big 10 Tournament. Seniors Adam Woodbury of Sioux City, says it doesn’t matter where they play. “They could have sent us anywhere, we’ll be ready for the toss,” Woodbury says. The Hawkeyes haven’t played Temple this season, but Woodbury says that doesn’t make a lot of difference either.
“It goes both ways,” Woodbury says, “they are not as familiar with us either. It’s all about just trying to get a grasp of what they do offensively and defensively, and just just trying to get a grasp of their big keys.” Sophomore Dom Uhl is one player who is looking forward to going to New York. It’s where he played high school ball after coming from Germany. “I didn’t hope it would happen, it’s just kind of funny, because I was recruited by Temple too,” Uhl says. He expects it to be a good matchup.
Uhl says Temple is very talented and they will play hard. Iowa finished the season at 21-10 overall and 12-6 in the Big Ten. This is the Hawkeyes third straight N-C-A-A Tournament berth. The game will start at approximately 2:10 p.m.
