Wainwright’s pinch-hit double leads Cardinals past Pirates

Sports

June 10th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pitcher Adam Wainwright, pinch-hitting because the Cardinals were out of positon players, hit a two-run, two-out double to spark a six-run 12th inning as St. Louis beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 9-3 on Friday night.

Wainwright batted for reliever Jonathan Broxton after Matt Carpenter drew a two-out walk from Juan Nicasio and Pirates manager Clint Hurdle decided to intentionally walk Alemdys Diaz to bring up Broxton’s spot in the order. Wainwright followed with a drive to the gap in left-center to score both runners. He is hitting .261 this season, going 6 for 23 with four doubles, one triple and one home run.

The Cardinals added four more runs in the inning. Matt Adams hit an RBI double to extend his hitting streak to 10 games and scored on Jhonny Peralta’s single before Brandon Moss’ two-run homer, his 14th, capped the outburst.

Branstad ‘open’ to major tax changes in 2017

News

June 10th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

Governor Terry Branstad says he is “open” to making changes in the state’s income taxes next year. “But I haven’t formalized any plans yet,” Branstad says. “I want to visit with legislators to see what is ‘the art of the possible.'” Branstad says he MIGHT support ending a controversial tax break that makes Iowa’s income tax RATES look higher than they actually are. Two decades ago, Branstad UNSUCCESSFULLY proposed getting rid of that tax credit. It gives Iowans the ability to subtract what they paid in FEDERAL income taxes from their state tax bill.

“That was back when Iowans for Tax Relief really led the charge to keep that,” Branstad says. “The circumstances may have changed somewhat.” The lobbying group’s influence in the statehouse has faded in the past several years and the founder of Iowans for Tax Relief died last fall. Another group called the Iowa Taxpayers Association released a study last month, making proposals to simplify the state’s income taxes — and getting rid of what’s called “federal deductability” tax break was at the top of the list. Branstad says Iowa is one of the “few states” that offer that deduction and it’s “an impediment” when trying to lure business to relocate or expand in Iowa.

“They look at what is the high marginal rate and they don’t take into consideration the federal deductability, so our effective rate is much lower than that marginal rate, so that hurts the perception of Iowa,” Branstad says, “Now, a lot of Iowans understand that because they are familiar with the Iowa tax, but a lot of companies from the outside, just looking at it, don’t realize that.” While Branstad says this is a problem, he’s not yet ready to call for eliminating this tax break until he’s sure a majority of legislators would vote to take that step.

“I’m not one to tilt at windmills,” Branstad says. “I want to do things that can be accomplished and sometimes it takes more than one year to accomplish significant things.”Branstad made his comments during taping of the “Iowa Press” program which will air tonight (Friday) on Iowa Public Television.

It’s hot…know the signs of heat exhaustion

News, Weather

June 10th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

The National Weather Service has placed more than a dozen counties in northwest and central Iowa under a heat advisory through Sunday. Temperatures are expected to reach the upper 90s, while heat indices could climb into the triple digits in Sioux City, Spencer, Des Moines, Ames, and surrounding cities. Staci Schweder, a nurse with Mercy Medical in Sioux City, says anyone spending time outdoors should drink plenty of water.

Heat Advisory (counties in Orange) until 9-p.m. Saturday for n.w. IA, & until 7-p.m. Sunday for parts of central IA

Heat Advisory (counties in Orange) until 9-p.m. Saturday for n.w. IA, & until 7-p.m. Sunday for parts of central IA

“Be proactive with that. Start drinking (water) right away in the morning and continue to drink throughout the day,” Schweder says. While staying hydrated is key to avoiding heat exhaustion, Schweder suggests wearing light, loose-fitting clothing and taking plenty of breaks from the sun as well. She also recommends using wet washcloths or towels on the neck or forearms to keep cool. The warning signs of heat stroke include feeling faint or nauseated.

“Heart racing…cool, clammy skin…if those start to happen, you definitely want to find shade and get to a cooler environment,” Schweder says. Some relief from the heat may arrive over northeast Iowa Sunday. The forecast calls for the possibility of some thunderstorms over northern Iowa tonight (Friday) and over northern and central Iowa Saturday. The National Weather Service reports wetter and cooler conditions are expected early next week.
