POCAHONTAS, Iowa (AP) – An assistant police chief in northwest Iowa has been accused of punching his girlfriend. Court records say 36-year-old Charles White, of Pocahontas, is charged with domestic assault causing injury. The woman told officers White punched her in a side of her face Wednesday while they argued over his cellphone, which she says she took to check for information while he was dozing.

Pocahontas Police Chief Al Hinrickson says White has been with the department for about eight years and has been assistant chief for about five years. White’s been placed on administrative leave.

Iowa’s Big 4 classic extended through 2019

Sports

September 20th, 2016 by admin

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The annual doubleheader featuring Iowa’s four Division I teams has been extended through 2019.

The event, known as the Hy-Vee Big 4 Classic, features the Hawkeyes and Cyclones playing Northern Iowa and Drake on a rotating basis in the state’s capital city of Des Moines. The doubleheader began as a compromise in 2012 so that high-majors Iowa and Iowa State could still face their instate rivals without having to play a true road game.

The event has taken off lately, with sellouts in each of the last two seasons.

Northern Iowa and Iowa, which both advanced to the second round of last year’s NCAA Tournament, play each other in Des Moines on Dec. 17. The Cyclones, who were Sweet 16 qualifiers last season, will face Drake.
