Livestock Losses with Heat

News

July 27th, 2011 by admin

Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey is encouraging livestock farmers who have experienced death loss due to the extreme high temperatures over the past few to contact their local USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) office. Livestock losses due to extreme temperatures and other weather events may be eligible to receive assistance through the Livestock Indemnity Program (LIP).

Producers only have 30 days from when the loss was discovered to file a notice of loss, so it is important that they start the process in a timely manner. If the farmers qualify for the program they will be eligible to receive 75 percent of the value of the livestock lost.

You can reach the local USDA office in Atlantic at (712) 243-2107. For other locations visit USDA.gov.

A rollover accident Sunday morning with a semi-truck in Adair County led to a Missouri man suffering minor injuries.

At about 10:00 Sunday morning, a semi-truck driven by 42-year-old Walter Wilson of Springfield, Missouri was eastbound on interstate 80 and attempting to leave the interstate at exit 75.

Wilson was going around the ramp which curves to the west when he says a white Toyota passenger vehicle passed him while on the exit ramp. Wilson says this caused him to move towards the inside of the shoulder on the ramp. His back tires went off the ramp, causing his semi to rollover.

Crossover Allowed on I-29 at exit 32

News

July 27th, 2011 by admin

Motorists on Interstate 29 at exit 32 near Glenwood and Plattsmouth, Neb will now be allowed to make a legal crossover. The change goes into effect this morning.

The change will allow motorists to use the crossover to make a u-turn from one interstate ramp to another.

The purpose of the crossover is to provide relief to travelers detoured by flooding; especially residents of Nebraska and Iowa that are using the Missouri River crossing at Plattsmouth, Neb. on a daily basis due to the flood-related closure of Iowa 2 at Nebraska City.

The temporary crossover will shorten out-of-distance travel by approximately 15 miles for travelers going east on U.S. 34 from Plattsmouth, Neb., and planning to continue north on I-29 or east on U.S. 34.

This temporary detour crossover can be used legally by the public, unlike other median crossovers along the interstate that are restricted.

In addition, eastbound U.S. 34 travelers will drive south on the ramp and use the crossover to take the ramp north.
