KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs have made Dwayne Bowe their franchise player, keeping the impact wide receiver off the free-agent market this off season. Kansas City made the move less than an hour before Monday’s deadline, even though it had long been expected. Bowe is guaranteed a salary of about $9.5 million next season, though the Chiefs have indicated they would like to sign him to a long-term deal. Bowe could still field offers from other teams, but the Chiefs would have the right to match. If they decline, they would lose Bowe but receive two first-round draft picks. Bowe had 81 catches for 1,159 yards and five touchdowns last season, even though Kansas City struggled with injuries to quarterback Matt Cassel and running back Jamal Charles. Bowe had 72 catches for 1,162 yards and 15 touchdowns in 2010, when he made the Pro Bowl.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Greg Davis spent 13 seasons calling the plays at Texas in a league famous for innovative attacks. Now Davis is coordinating the offense for Iowa, often seen as the epitome of conservative Big Ten football. Davis says the plan will be to merge the best of both worlds to create a system that can work for the Hawkeyes. Davis, the former offensive coordinator under Mack Brown at Texas, met with the media Monday for the first time since taking over as the Hawkeyes offensive coordinator for Ken O’Keefe Davis says he and coach Kirk Ferentz have discussed blending philosophies to create a system unique to Iowa.

Danville had too many weapons and used them all to beat St. Albert 68-39 in a first round Class 1-A boys state tournament game Monday in Des Moines.  The Falcons were held to 30% shooting making just 13 of 43.  Danville shot 56% making 28 of 50 attempts.  The Bears led 30-11 at halftime and finished the game with a big rebounding advantage of 39-18.  Steven Soukup had 18 points to lead the Bears, his twin brother Michael had 16 and Collin Bartsch had 15.  St. Albert was led by Connor Thomas with 15 points and JD Culjat had 10.  The Falcons end the year with a mark of 14-11, while the defending 1-A runner-up Bears will play Nodaway Valley in Thursday’s semi-finals.

Using their quickness, Nodaway Valley held North Iowa to 31.5% shooting in a Wolverines 62-40 win in the first round of the Class 1-A boys state basketball tournament.  Playing in the opening game of the tourney Monday morning, Nodaway Valley jumped out to a 30-17 halftime lead and were never challenged in the second half.  The Wolverines got solid performances from their leaders, as Dan Ehrsam scored 20 points, T.J. Bower tossed in 14 points and 6-foot-7 center Alex Welsch added 11 points and hauled down 10 rebounds.  The Wolverines made 20 of 42 shots from the floor, shooting 47.6% overall and made 7 of 16 from the three point line.  They also made 15 of their 18 free throw attempts.  Nodaway Valley out-rebounded North Iowa 37-26.  North Iowa made just four of 17 three point tries.  The Wolverines improve to 23-2 and advance to semi-finals on Thursday morning at 10:30.
