MARY PAOLLAZZI, 86, of Harlan, died Sat., April 28th, at the Elm Crest Retirement Community. A Mass of Christian Burial service for MARY PAOLLAZZI will be held 10-a.m. Thu., May 3rd, at the St. Mary Our Lady of Fatima Church in Portsmouth. Pauley-Jones Funeral Home in Harlan has the arrangements.

Visitation at the funeral home is from 8am-9pm Wed., May 2nd, with a Rosary at 7-p.m.

Burial will be in the St. Boniface Cemetery at Westphalia.

MARY PAOLLAZZI is survived by:

Her nieces & nephews, especially Theresa (Mrs. Raymond) Bruch, of Persia, with home she made her home.

Western IA woman sent to Neb. prison for dog dumping

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (AP) – An Iowa woman has been ordered to serve 90 days in a Nebraska prison for dumping 23 dead or dying dogs in a cornfield. Hall County District Judge William Wright said during Friday’s sentencing hearing that Denise Withee surrounded herself with animals to help her cope with depression. Wright ordered the prison to evaluate Withee, of Mapleton, Iowa, and report back to him so he can make a final determination on her sentence.

Withee said during her animal cruelty trial that she was taking the dogs someone in Nebraska when she became sick, pulled over and passed out. She said that when she awoke, most of the dogs were dead from the heat. She said she panicked and dumped them near Grand Island.

Molina Blasts Cardinals to Win

     ST. LOUIS (AP) – St. Louis Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina received two awards for his defense before Saturday’s game with the Milwaukee Brewers. It was his offense that stole the show.

     Molina went 4-for-4 with a two-run homer to lead the Cardinals to a 7-3 win over Milwaukee. Molina has 10 four-hit games in his career, the last coming on May 22, 2011, against Kansas City.

     He has always been known for his defense as evidenced by the pregame presentation of his fourth consecutive Rawlings Gold Glove as a catcher and the inaugural Rawlings Platinum Glove awarded to the game’s best overall fielder. Now he has become a force offensively as well, hitting .305 with 14 homers and 65 RBIs last season, all career highs.

Chiefs Fill Needs On Final Draft Day

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Kansas City Chiefs picked Junior Hemingway of Michigan in the seventh round of the NFL draft Saturday, going with a wide receiver for the second time on the final day of the NFL draft.

     The Chiefs drafted Fresno State’s Devon Wylie in the fourth round.

     Hemingway managed 34 catches for 699 yards and four touchdowns his senior season with the Wolverines. His stock rose at the scouting combine, where the 6-foot-1, 225-pound receiver posted the best numbers at his position in the three-cone drill and 20-yard shuttle.

     The Chiefs picked San Diego State defensive tackle Jerome Long earlier in the seventh round. They also picked Texas A&M running back Cyrus Gray and Alabama defensive back De’Quan Menzie on Saturday, establishing some depth at the areas of greatest need.

Drake Relays Final Day

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Wallace Spearmon, Jr. broke the meet record in the 200 meters set by Michael Johnson 15 years ago, highlighting Saturday’s final session of the Drake Relays.

     Spearmon crossed in 20.02 seconds, beating the mark Johnson set in 1997 by three-hundredths of a second.

     U.S. pole vault star Jenn Suhr also set a meet mark with a winning effort of 15 feet, 3 inches on her first try, as did high jumper Chaunte Lowe at 6-6.

     Those record-breaking performances came despite temperatures in the low 50s and steady wind that likely forced hometown star Lolo Jones to scratch from the 100-meter hurdles.

     Jones said Friday that she was concerned about running in less than ideal conditions. She grew up in Des Moines and won the event from 2005-08.

     Native Iowan Jenny Simpson, the reigning world champion in the 1,500, won in 4:12.95.

ETHEL MARGARET PETERS, 92, of Avoca died Friday, April 27th at the Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan. Funeral Services for ETHEL MARGARET PETERS will be held Tuesday, May 1st at 2:00pm at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Avoca. Pauley-Jones Funeral Home in Avoca has the arrangements.

Cut Gas Line Causes Evacuation in Red Oak

A gas leak west of Red Oak forced several residents from their homes for about two and one-half hours, Saturday. Montgomery County emergency management director Brian Hamman said a home owner at 1938 G Avenue cut a one-inch diameter natural gas line while digging in his yard, about 10:20 a.m. Fire crews evacuated four houses and closed roads in the area while crews from Mid-American Energy promptly acted to repair the the line. Residents were allowed to return to their homes about 1 p.m. Saturday. No injuries were reported.

Expect more meat, baked goods at farmers markets

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — For fresh food connoisseurs May means the opening of farmers markets and with an early spring this year some produce may be ripe and ready ahead of normal. Iowa’s biggest farmers market is in downtown Des Moines, where nearly 40,000 people attended opening day last year. Manager Kelly Foss says this year’s opening on May 5 should equal or better that turnout. The market has grown to about 20,000 visitors each Saturday morning May through October. Foss says she sees a surge in interest in meat producers and makers of gourmet cupcakes and muffins. Nationally, the U.S. Department of Agriculture reports the number of farmers markets has climbed in the last decade to more than 7,000. The Iowa Department of Agriculture lists more than 240 farmers markets in the state.
