Chiefs hold off Browns 17-13 for 9th straight victory

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Alex Smith threw two touchdown passes for Kansas City, and the game clock finally stopped Johnny Manziel as the Chiefs held on to beat the Cleveland Browns 17-13 on Sunday for their franchise record-tying ninth consecutive victory. Smith threw for 125 yards while running for 54, helping Kansas City (10-5) clinch a playoff berth when Pittsburgh lost to Baltimore moments after his own game ended.

The Chiefs jumped out to a 17-3 halftime lead Sunday, but their offense became listless over the final two quarters, just as Manziel was pumping some life into the Browns (3-12). The former Heisman Trophy winner led Cleveland to 10 straight points, then took over at his 30 with 1:52 left and no timeouts. The Browns picked up three first downs, and Manziel hit Darius Jennings on fourth-and-10 from the Chiefs 32. But time expired before Manziel could get another snap off.

He spiked his helmet in frustration as the Chiefs poured onto the field.

Creston woman suffers possible/unknown injuries in accident

One person was injured during a two-vehicle collision Saturday afternoon, in Creston. Authorities in Union County say 19-year old Caitlyn Alexandra Ray, of Creston, was transported by ambulance to the Greater Regional Medical Center in Creston, after the SUV she was driving collided with a car at the intersection of East Summit and Palm Streets. The crash occurred at around 2:55-p.m.

Officials say a 2005 Chevy Malibu driven by 18-year old Kylie Jo Royster, of Earlham, was traveling south on Palm Street at the same time Ray was traveling west on Summit. The vehicles collided at the uncontrolled intersection when Ray failed to yield.

Ray, who was cited for Failure to Yield,  suffered possible, unknown injuries. Royster was not injured in the collision. Damage from the crash amounted t0 $8,000.

Iowa TE Duzey to miss Rose Bowl with knee injury

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Iowa tight end Jake Duzey will not play in the Rose Bowl against Stanford after aggravating a knee injury in practice. Duzey tore his patella tendon in spring practice, and played in nine game on a limited basis. After finishing with 36 catches in 2014, most among Big Ten tight ends, Duzey did not catch a pass this season. The school made the announcement Sunday.

Iowa tight ends Henry Krueger Coble and George Kittle filled in and combined for 52 catches for 675 yards and seven touchdowns. Krueger Coble is second on the team in receptions and third in yards receiving.

The Rose Bowl is Friday.

Sioux City case reveals gap in Iowa student-teacher sex law

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) — A sex case involving a student and an adult worker at a Sioux City high school has exposed a gap in an Iowa law designed to protect students from exploitation. The Sioux City Journal reports that if an employee is not a licensed teacher, aide or coach, there may be little the state’s justice system can do.

Iowa law defines a school employee as an administrator, teacher or licensed individual, or someone with a coaching authorization. It doesn’t cover non-teachers, volunteers or contract employees. Erick Deleon was employed by a Des Moines-based nonprofit when he became involved with a 16-year-old participant in his program at Sioux City’s North High School. Deleon was convicted of sexual exploitation by a school employee, but a judge noted the gap in state law.

HELEN MEANS,97, of Fontanelle, died Saturday, December 26th, at the Good Samaritan Society in Fontanelle. Funeral services for HELEN MEANS will be held 11:30-a.m. Saturday, January 2nd, at the Greenfield United Methodist Church. Steen Funeral Home in Greenfield has the arrangements.

Visitation will be held on Friday, January 1, 2016, from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Steen Funeral Home in Greenfield. Online condolences may be left to the family at www.steenfunerals.com.

Burial will be in the Fontanelle Cemetery. A luncheon will be held at the church following the committal services at the cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Helen Means memorial fund to be established by the family.

HELEN MEANS is survived by:

Her sons – Larry Means and wife Elaine of Greenfield; Jack Means and wife Carolyn of Loveland, Colorado; Jim Means and wife Carol of Olathe, Kansas, and Tim Means and wife Kari of Council Bluffs

Her daughter – Mary Ann and friend J.R. Cornett of Indianola.

16 grandchildren, 55 great grandchildren, her daughter-in-law, Serena Means of Newton,other relatives and friends.

5 injured in Perry crash Saturday

Five people were injured during a collision Saturday afternoon, in Perry. According to reports, one person was arrested on suspicion of intoxication following the crash, after they attempted to leave the scene. The accident happened at around 1:15-p.m. at Highway 141 and 8th Street. The injured included four children and one adult. No names were released, and a report on their conditions was not available.

Authorities told KCCI the man who tried to flee appeared to be impaired and was bleeding from the head. Police also said he was possibly intoxicated and was combative.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Kirk Cousins threw for a season-high 365 yards and four touchdowns as the Washington Redskins clinched the NFC East, beating Philadelphia 38-24. Cousins tossed his first two scoring strikes to Jordan Reed, who had nine receptions for 129 yards. DeAngelo Hall put the Skins in control by returning DeMarco Murray’s fumble 17 yards for a TD late in the third quarter about 1 1/2 minutes after Murray’s four-yard touchdown got the Eagles within 23-17.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Peyton Manning is vehemently refuting a report set to air on Al Jazeera that contends the Denver Broncos quarterback received human growth hormone through his wife during his recovery from neck fusion surgeries in 2011 in Indianapolis. Manning called the allegation “complete garbage and is totally made up.” The allegations surfaced in an Al Jazeera undercover probe into doping in global sports that is set to air Sunday and was shared in advance with the Huffington Post.

CLEVELAND (AP) — Browns linebacker Armonty Bryant will not play in Sunday’s game at Kansas City after he and safety De’Ante Saunders were arrested Christmas morning following a traffic stop. Bryant was arrested for the possession of Adderrall because he couldn’t provide a prescription for the drug, which is on the NFL’s list of banned substances. A patrol spokesman also says a gun was confiscated from Saunders’ car because Saunders does not have a permit for the weapon.

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) — The 12th-ranked Kentucky Wildcats are 10-2 after Tyler Ulis scored 21 points in a 75-73 triumph over No. 16 Louisville. Alex Poythress scored 14 points for Kentucky, which blew most of a 16-point, second-half lead before giving John Calipari his 200th victory as the team’s head coach. Damion Lee scored a game-high 27 points for the 11-2 but missed a potential game-winning, 3-point heave at the buzzer.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles Clippers will spend at least two weeks without forward Blake Griffin because of a partially torn left quad. The Clippers said Griffin was injured in Friday’s win over the Lakers. He is scoring a team-high 23.2 points and averaging 8.7 rebounds and five assists this season.
