An incident in Villisca late Friday night resulted in the arrest on a man on a trio of charges. The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office says 57-year old Kirk Allen Black, of Villisca, was arrested at around 10:30-p.m. following an incident in the 400 block of E. 5th Street, in Villisca. Black was charged with Assault on a Peace Officer, Disorderly Conduct, and Interference with Official Acts. He was booked into the Montgomery County Jail and held on $1,000 bond.

Iowa State hopes to make Matt Campbell a winner in his debut as the Cyclones host Northern Iowa this (Saturday) evening. Campbell will try to make a consistent winner out of a program that has not enjoyed a winning season since 2009. Campbell says a key will be slowing down UNI dual threat quarterback Aaron Bailey.
The Panthers have a lot of new starters in the secondary but Campbell says they are not necessarily new faces. UNI coach Mark Farley says with a new staff at Iowa State they must be prepared to make adjustments on the run. Farley says the Panthers must handle the atmosphere but it is a great way to start the season.
It is a 7:00 p.m. kickoff in Jack Trice Stadium.

Iowa takes lofty expectations and a number 17 national ranking into today’s (Saturday’s) opener at home against Miami of Ohio. The Hawkeyes are a four touchdown favorite but coach Kirk Ferentz knows openers can be unpredictable. Miami of Ohio was 3-9 a year ago but Ferentz says the Redhawks are an experienced team. It is a 2:30 p.m. kickoff in Kinnick Stadium. Pre-game coverage begins at 12:30 on KJAN AM 1220 and FM 101.1.

More than 80 percent of the state’s corn and soybean fields were rated in “good” or “excellent” condition at the start of this week and one weather experts says the 2016 growing season “has turned out pretty well” for Iowa farmers. State Climatologist Harry Hillaker says crop development is about a week to a week-and-a-half ahead of normal. “Things for the most part got planted on a timely basis, with exceptions in far western Iowa that had a pretty mid-April and early May, but otherwise in much of the state things got planted on time. It’s been a relatively warm growing season, so things that did get planted on time have been progressing along very well.”
Yield prospects are “looking quite good” for most of the state, according to Hillaker. “A few places still a bit on the dry side, but nothing really super dry at this point,” Hillaker says. “Certainly northwest Iowa could use some rain, although it’s getting late enough in the growing season that it may still, perhaps, help out the soybean, but probably too late to have any benefit for the corn crop in that part of the state.”
A small area stretching from Onawa to just northwest of Sac City got NO rainfall at all last week, while nearly nine inches fell near Decorah. About nine-tenths of an inch is the normal amount of rainfall in Iowa for the final week of August.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles remains iffy for the season opener against the Chargers. Chiefs coach Andy Reid said on a conference call with reporters Friday that Charles “might need some more time to get himself back,” though Reid did not rule him out of next weekend’s game.
Charles tore the ACL in his right knee in Week 5 last season. He has been working out for several weeks, though he did not participate in any of the Chiefs’ preseason games. Reid was more optimistic about safety Eric Berry and linebacker Tamba Hali.
Berry did not report to training camp until last weekend after refusing to sign his franchise tender, while Hali is returning from surgery in February on his ailing knee.
CINCINNATI (AP) — Eugenio Suarez singled up the middle with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning Friday night, rallying the Cincinnati Reds to a 3-2 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals. The Cardinals were hoping to start a final-month surge toward the playoffs — they’re in position to get the NL’s second wild card berth behind San Francisco. Instead, the Reds snapped a four-game losing streak.
Seung Hwan Oh (4-3) walked Zack Cozart on four pitches to open the ninth, and Brandon Phillips followed with a single. After Scott Schebler singled one out later to load the bases, Suarez got his first career game-ending hit. The Reds had loaded the bases in the seventh and eighth and failed to score.
Raisel Iglesias (1-1) gave up a walk in the ninth. Yadier Molina and Randal Grichuk homered for St. Louis.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe says it has found several sites of “significant cultural and historic value” along the path of a proposed oil pipeline. The tribe is challenging the Army Corps of Engineers’ decision to grant permits for Dallas-based Energy Transfer Partners’ $3.8 billion Dakota Access pipeline. Tribal preservation officer Tim Mentz says researches found cairns, burials and other sites of historic significance to the Standing Rock Sioux and other tribes.
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The Nebraska Supreme Court has upheld the first-degree murder conviction of an Iowa man for killing a northeast Nebraska woman. Raymond Gonzales Jr., of Sioux City, Iowa, was convicted in 2014 and sentenced to life for shooting 28-year-old Bonnie Baker 16 times in her South Sioux City home on Dec. 15, 2013. On Friday, the state’s high court rejected arguments by Gonzales of prosecutorial misconduct and that jurors should have been instructed that they could find him guilty of manslaughter.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The Iowa Environmental Council says Iowa has set a new state record for the number of beach advisories issued because of toxic algae dangers. The council says 37 beach advisories have been issued this year because of a toxin produced by blue-green algae blooms in water. That surpasses last year’s previous record of 34 warnings.
BLUE GRASS, Iowa (AP) — Sheriff’s officials have identified a construction work killed when the driver of a speeding car apparently lost control in a work zone near the southeast Iowa city of Blue Grass. The Scott County Sheriff’s Office says 62-year-old Willie Holley, of Rock Island, Illinois, was killed in the Thursday crash. Officials say a deputy spotted the speeding car on Highway 61, but that it entered a work zone before she could pull it over.
The Atlantic Trojans went on the road to Shenandoah for a non-district football game on Friday night and came up just short of a victory. The Mustangs scored the only touchdown of the game with 1:20 left in the third quarter and held on for a 7-3 victory in a hard fought game.
The defenses stole the show for the majority of the game with neither team getting any momentum early on in. It wasn’t until the end of the first quarter that Atlantic put together the first sustained drive of the game and they kept it alive on the 10th play of the drive by faking a punt and picking up a first down as Gratt Reed took the fake 29 yards to the Shenandoah 21. The Trojans carried that drive inside the 10 at the beginning of the second quarter but ended up settling for a 25-yard field goal from Eric Wieser for the first score of the game.
Both teams traded short drives to end the first half and Atlantic came out with an impressive drive to open up the second half. The Trojans went 60 yards in 18 plays but came up empty, turning the ball over on downs at the Mustang 22-yard line. The Mustangs would then take the ball down the field for the only touchdown of the game on a 7 play drive that featured a 34 yard pass completion and the drive-capping 32 yard touchdown run by Kyle Owens. Jordan Miller added the PAT and the Mustangs would hang on to that deciding margin 7-3.
Atlantic got the ball back with 1:42 left in the game to try to mount a drive but stalled out after just five plays. The Trojans would have had more clock to work with but a roughing the kicker penalty allowed Shenandoah to keep possession with 3:12 left in the game. The Trojans did get the ball back at the end of the game with just 5 seconds left for one last try, but a hook and lateral play was brought down quickly to end the game.
Atlantic falls to 1-1 on the season and now gets ready for district play next week at home against Denison-Schleswig. Shenandoah improved to 1-1 and will enter their district play at Kuemper Catholic next week.
