Cardinals solve Wrigley again, crush Hammel, Cubs 10-4

CHICAGO (AP) – Yadier Molina drove in four runs, Stephen Piscotty homered and the St. Louis Cardinals boosted their playoff hopes by getting to Jason Hammel early in a 10-4 rout of the Chicago Cubs on Saturday. Randal Grichuk added three RBIs and Jhonny Peralta had three hits and scored three runs for the Cardinals, who snapped a two-game skid and moved into a tie with San Francisco for the final NL wild-card spot pending the Giants’ game at San Diego.

Hammel (15-10) allowed six runs and six hits while getting just seven outs, hurting his bid for a postseason rotation spot. A day after clinching the NL’s best record, the Cubs were denied their 99th win and a record 57th at Wrigley Field.

FL woman wanted on Adams County warrant turns herself-in

The Adams County Sheriff’s Office reports a woman wanted on a warrant connected to an accident that occurred on or about Sept. 19th, turned herself-in to the Sheriff’s Office Saturday morning. Samantha Eslinger, of Panama City, FL, was charged with OWI and Driving While Suspended. Eslinger was later released on a $1,500 cash bond.

Wadley scores on 26-yard run to lead Iowa over Rutgers

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (AP) — Akrum Wadley scored on 26-yard run on the play after Iowa’s defense forced a turnover deep in Rutgers’ territory and the Hawkeyes rebounded from their stunning loss to North Dakota State with a 14-7 victory over tougher-than-expected Rutgers on Saturday.

Safety Brandon Snyder set up the score by stripping the ball from receiver Andre Patton with just under nine minute to play to help Iowa (3-1, 1-0 Big Ten) win its ninth straight regular-season conference game and its seventh straight league win on the road. C.J. Beathard threw a 36-yard touchdown pass to tight end George Kittle late in the first half to give Iowa a 7-0 lead.

Rutgers (2-2, 0-1) tied the game early in the fourth quarter on a 14-yard touchdown pass from Chris Laviano to Patton. The Scarlet Knights got to the Hawkeyes 17 on their next possession, but Iowa came up with stops on third- and fourth-down runs to end the drive.

Iowa took the lead late in the first half on Beathard’s touchdown pass to Kittle. It capped an eight-play, 99-yard drive that started after the Hawkeyes’ defense stopped the Scarlet Knights after they got a first-and-goal at the 3 on a 76-yard catch and run by Janarion Grant. Hawkeyes cornerback Desmond King stepped on Grant’s right leg at the end of the play and Rutgers’ dynamic receiver was knocked out of the game. Beathard had runs of 14 and 12 yards on the drive and hit four passes, the last to a wide-open Kittle, who just got across the goal line with 34 seconds left in the half.

Rutgers tied the game on Laviano’s third-down pass to Patton in the left corner of the end zone with 12:45 left in regulation, capping a 13-play, 88-yard drive. Justin Goodwin had runs of 24 and 13 yards and Laviano had a 12-yard run.

The Hawkeyes returns to Iowa City for a Homecoming contest against Northwestern on Oct. 1st.

Iowa State drills San Jose State 44-10

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Jacob Park threw for 165 yards and three touchdowns and Iowa State thumped San Jose State 44-10 on Saturday, giving coach Matt Campbell his first win with the Cyclones. Mike Warren rushed for a season-high 103 yards for Iowa State (1-3), which finally had some success rotating starter Joel Lanning and Park. Lanning was 5 of 8 passing for 136 yards and two TDs.

The Cyclones needed just 7:51 and 24 plays to put up 23 points — a season high for a game — in the first half. Lanning’s 49-yard TD pass to Deshaunte Jones made it 30-3 early in the second half. San Jose State freshman Josh Love threw for 155 yards, but he was also picked off four times. The Spartans (1-3) sorely missed starter Kenny Potter, who was out with a right leg injury.

Up next for Iowa State: The Cyclones host Baylor, its third opponent to be ranked at some point this season. Both Iowa and TCU, which beat the Cyclones by a combined score of 83-23, dropped out of the Top 25 after early losses.

RALPH MITCHELL, 83, of Greenfield, died Saturday, September 24th, at the Greater Regional Hospice Home in Creston. Celebration of Life Services for RALPH MITCHELL will be held Saturday, October 1st at 10:30am at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Greenfield. Steen Funeral Home in Greenfield has the arrangements.

Flag presentation will be conducted by the Greenfield American Legion Head-Endres Post No. 265 and V.F.W. Post No. 5357 immediately following the service at the church. Dr. Keith Schweitzer will officiate the service.

Open Visitation will be held Friday, September 30th at the Immanuel Lutheran Church from 12:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with the family greeting friends from 5:00pm-7:00pm.

Memorials to the Ralph Mitchell memorial fund to be determined by the family.

Ingredients:

  • 1-1/2 c. whole bran cereal (I used bran flakes)
  • 1 c. fresh apple cider
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1/4 c. corn oil
  • ¼ c. maple syrup
  • 1 c. all-purpose flour
  • 2 t. baking powder
  • 1 t. ground cinnamon
  • ¼ t. baking soda
  • ¼ t. salt
  • 2 apples, cored and finely chopped (1 c.)
  • 1/3 to ½ c. chopped pecans, optional

Garnish:

Coarse sugar for sprinkling tops of muffins prior to baking

Method:

Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Lightly coat inside of 12 muffin cups with baking spray. In a small bowl, combine bran cereal and apple cider; let stand 3 minutes. Stir in egg, oil, and maple syrup; set aside. In medium bowl, stir together flour, baking powder, cinnamon, soda, and salt. Make a well in the center. Add bran/cider mixture and stir just until moistened. (Batter will be thick.) Fold in chopped apples and optional pecans. Divide batter equally between muffin cups. (Cups will be very full.) Bake for about 25 minutes or until cake tester comes out clean when inserted into the center of a muffin. Let cool about 10 minutes. Remove from pans; continue to cool.

Yields: 12 muffins

Iowa State looks for first win against San Jose State

Iowa State looks to get into the win column today (Saturday) at home, against San Jose State. The Cyclones are 0-3 while the Spartans are 1-2 after a loss to Utah. ISU coach Matt Campbell has preached to his team about earning the right to win in practice. Campbell says the Cyclones need to do what it takes to win.

Kick-off from Jack Trice Stadium in Ames, is at 11-a.m.

Iowa opens Big Ten play at Rutgers

The Iowa Hawkeyes open Big Ten play at Rutgers.The Hawkeyes are 2-1 after a loss to North Dakota State. Rutgers is 2-1 and has shown the ability to overcome slow starts. Ottumwa native Chris Ash is in his first season as the coach at Rutgers. He formerly was on the staff at Ohio State. Senior receiver Janarion Grant is a game breaker for Rutgers. He has a kick return for a touchdown, a punt return for a touchdown and has even thrown a touchdown pass.

You can hear the game today on KJAN beginning with the pre-game show at 9-a.m., and kick-off from High Point Solutions Stadium, in Piscataway, New Jersey, at 11.

Report: 31% of Iowa soybeans fed to Iowa pigs

An analysis of how Iowa’s soybean production is utilized finds that nearly one of every four rows of soybeans is fed to the more than 38 million pigs raised annually in the state. Aaron Putze is director of communications for the Iowa Soybean Association (ISA), which conducted the study. “I can’t say that was something new, but it certainly did reinforce how important pig production in Iowa is to the Iowa soybean farmer,” Putze says.

That’s one reason why ISA backed Prestage Foods’ recent efforts to locate a new pork processing facility in Iowa. “More importantly than that, it’s a win for Iowa — to have close to 1,000 additional jobs that are expected to come online with that facility,” Putze says. “Plus the additional bidding for pigs that will result on the open market, the potential additional hogs fed to satisfy the new demand, and the need then for more grain production.”

Putze says pig production creates a market for 2.7 million tons of soybean meal per year, or 31 percent of all soybeans processed in the state. Poultry, including laying hens, broilers and turkeys, account for another 6.4 percent of meal usage.

Governor declares disaster emergency in 13 counties due to flooding; Guard deployed

Governor Terry Branstad is deploying the National Guard to respond to flooding in 13 Iowa counties and prepare for future flooding downriver. “We just have to deal with whatever situation comes our way,” Branstad told reporters. “We need to be as well-prepared and in a situation like this in major cities like Waterloo and Cedar Rapids, obviously,we have a little time to prepare and we want to do everything we can for the state to assist the communities and doing the best job we can to avoid and mitigate damage.”

Branstad has signed a proclamation declaring a “disaster emergency” in 13 counties affected by flooding. The counties included are Allamakee, Benton, Black Hawk, Bremer, Buchanan, Butler, Cedar, Chickasaw, Delaware, Floyd, Franklin, Linn and Wright. Iowa National Guard Adjutant General Timothy Orr says there were lessons learned during the significant flooding of 2008.

“I think it starts with the community preparedness,” Orr says. “We’re seeing that all up and down our rivers, the pro-active approach of our communities.” Orr has deployed teams of soldiers to emergency management offices in 11 counties. Three more teams will be deployed today (Saturday), focusing on areas south of Iowa City.

We’ve learned that by working from the Mississippi River north, we can get after some of those big issues early on and identify potential issues that will give us time and an ability to bring resources.” Flooding is NOT expected in Iowa City, but Orr says communities like Columbus Junction and Oakville may need to brace for flooding.

Branstad and Lieutenant Governor Kim Reynolds will tour flood damage in Clarksville, Shell Rock and Cedar Rapids today (Saturday).
