DUBUQUE, Iowa (AP) — A train derailment shook several homes in rural eastern Iowa Sunday but the toppled cars avoided the buildings and no injuries were reported. Kerry Rogers told the Dubuque Telegraph Herald it was scary when his house shook and a tree was uprooted during the derailment Sunday morning. Canadian Pacific spokesman Andy Cummings says 26 of the 99 empty cars in the train derailed around 6 a.m. Sunday. The incident happened several miles southeast of Dubuque.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — As lawmakers rush to pass a bill to remove funding for Planned Parenthood, some health clinics that could see an increase in patients say they haven’t heard anything about a state-run family planning program that could take effect within months. The GOP-backed legislation flew through the Senate on Thursday and now moves to the House. The bill hinges on rejecting millions in federal Medicaid dollars in order to eliminate state funding for Planned Parenthood.

WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) — Authorities are trying to find the owner of a dog that two fishermen pulled from the icy Cedar River in Waterloo. The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reports that fishermen Chad and Jason Conkling played a key role in the rescue because they were getting ready to launch their boat nearby when the dog was spotted struggling in the current. The brothers pulled the dog from the water before firefighters could launch a boat.

WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) — Black Hawk County officials may try to save a defective Cedar Valley Nature Trail bridge in La Porte City that they were planning to tear down. The Courier reports that Board of Supervisors members have agreed to include $77,000 in next year’s conservation board budget for engineering work on long-term repairs to the span over Wolf Creek. About a dozen cyclists asked the board to save the bridge.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Jordan Bohannon scored 15 points, Tyler Cook added 13 and Iowa held on for an 81-70 win over Nebraska on Sunday. Brady Ellingson scored 11 points and hit a late 3-pointer to help the Hawkeyes (14-10, 6-5 Big Ten) secure their third straight win and avenge a double-overtime loss at Nebraska last month. Bohannon hit four 3-pointers and has a freshman school-record 54 on the season.

Peter Jok, the Big Ten’s leading scorer, scored 12 points in his return to the lineup after missing Iowa’s last two games with back issues. Jok played 30 minutes and shot 2 of 7 from the field. Jack McVeigh scored 16 points to lead Nebraska (10-13, 4-7), which outrebounded Iowa but made only 3 of 19 3-pointers. Tai Webster had 14 points, six rebounds and six assists. The senior became the 28th player in Nebraska history to reach the 1,000-point mark.

Referee Tom Eades suffered an undisclosed injury with 12 minutes left in the second half and did not return. The rest of the game was officiated by two referees.

Authorities say at around 12:03-a.m. Sunday, Officers responded to the Police Station for a report of a robbery. Upon arrival officers located the victim, Tony Shively, of Council Bluffs.

Shively told officers that while using the ATM near 1st Street and Pearl, he was approached by two black males, who asked him for a cigarette. Rushed efforts to defund Planned Parenthood spark confusion

News

February 5th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — As the Iowa Legislature rushes to pass a bill to remove funding for Planned Parenthood, some health clinics that could see an increase in patients say they haven’t heard anything about a new state-run family planning program that could take effect within months.

The GOP-backed legislation flew through the Senate on Thursday and now moves to the House. The bill hinges on rejecting millions in federal Medicaid dollars in order to eliminate state funding for Planned Parenthood.

Republican lawmakers contend the new program will allow more rural health clinics to offer family planning services. However, representatives for some of those facilities say they’re not familiar with the state’s plans. While some clinics say they’re capable of helping more patients, they are confused about how the new system would work.
