Farmers decry Trump plans to cut agriculture subsides

June 3rd, 2017 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Farm groups and some members of Congress from farm states are decrying proposed cuts to crop insurance and other safety net programs for farmers included in President Donald Trump’s budget.

The proposed cuts come as farmers are facing their fourth straight year of falling income. They could particularly affect farm states such as Iowa, Kansas and Nebraska that helped Trump win the November election.

One proposal would cut the federal crop insurance program by $28 billion over 10 years. Programs that provide crop subsidies would lose $9 billion. But Republican Sen. Charles Grassley, an Iowa farmer, says the crop insurance cuts won’t make it through Congress.

The Trump administration says the proposed cuts help fulfill a campaign promise to balance the federal budget.

Chiefs release WR Maclin in midst of voluntary workouts

Sports

June 3rd, 2017 by admin

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Kansas City Chiefs have released wide receiver Jeremy Maclin, cutting ties with one of the most high-profile free-agent signings made by general manager John Dorsey and coach Andy Reid.

The unexpected move Friday came after the Chiefs wrapped up the second week of voluntary workouts. Maclin had been a regular at the Chiefs’ practice facility this offseason, and he recently got married – with Reid and a number of his teammates in attendance.

Maclin was entering the third year of a $55 million, five-year contract with Kansas City. It was a deal that became especially costly when the Chiefs found guilty of tampering in their pursuit of him and were stripped of two draft picks and received a fine.

Iowa topples top-seeded Houston 6-3 in regional opener

HOUSTON (AP) – Mitchell Boe, Iowa’s No. 9 hitter, had a pair of run-scoring hits and the Hawkeyes knocked off top-seeded Houston 6-3 in the first round of the Houston Regional on Friday night.

Robert Neustrom broke a 2-2 tie with an RBI single in the fifth for the No. 4 seed Hawkeyes (39-20), who will play Texas A&M on Saturday night. The Cougars (40-20) will face Baylor in an elimination game between former Southwest Conference foes.

Boe’s RBI double put Iowa up 2-0 in the fourth, and his single made it 5-3 in the eighth. Ben Norman, the No. 8 hitter, went 3 for 3 and scored two runs.

Ryan Erickson (4-3) gave up three runs – two earned – in five innings for the Big Ten Tournament champions. Josh Martsching struck out four over the final 2 2/3 innings for his eighth save.

Houston ace Trey Cumbie (10-2) allowed a season-high 10 hits in 5 1/3 innings, and three of the four runs against him were earned.
