IRVING, Texas – The Big 12 Conference announced today that Iowa State senior linebacker Joel Lanning and senior quarterback Kyle Kempt were named Big 12 Defensive and Offensive Players of the Week, respectively.

Lanning was sensational in Iowa State’s 38-31 upset win over No. 3 Oklahoma in Norman on Saturday. Playing on both sides of the ball, Lanning totaled 78 snaps (57 on defense, 13 on offense, eight on special teams).

Lanning, a native of Ankeny, Iowa, recorded eight tackles, a sack and a fumble recovery deep inside ISU territory to halt an OU scoring drive.

On offense, Lanning rushed for 35 yards (nine carries) and threw for 25 yards (2-of-3).

He currently ranks sixth nationally in tackles per game at 10.8, recording the most tackles in a game by a Big 12 player this season with 20 vs. Texas.

In his first career start, Kempt was outstanding for the Cyclone offense. He completed 18 of his 24 attempts through the air for 343 yards and three touchdowns. He led four Iowa State touchdown drives that were 70 yards or more, including a 94-yard march.

Kempt, a native of Massillon, Ohio, did a fantastic job of distributing the ball, finding seven different ISU targets. All three of his touchdown passes were in the second half, helping ISU erase an 11-point deficit.

With his 300-plus yard passing performance, Kempt and Jacob Park become the only two quarterbacks in Iowa State history to throw for 300 yards or more in a game in the same season.

Young, Ernst calls on ATF to review regulations on ‘bump stocks’

News

October 9th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

Two of the Republicans in Iowa’s congressional delegation are calling on the Trump Administration to quickly review federal regulations on so-called “bump stocks.” The device was used by the sniper in last week’s mass shooting in Las Vegas. Republican Congressman David Young of Van Meter, says “I can’t think of a good reason why these things are existing.”  Young says he had no idea what a bump stock was before last week’s news stories about the product. “My understanding is it is basically a tool, an accessory to make a legal weapon into an illegal weapon,” Young says. “And so I’m reaching out with my colleagues to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms to revisit their ruling in 2010 when they decided not to regulate these.”

Young is NOT calling for congress to pass a law banning the sale of bump stocks. In the U.S. Senate, Iowa Republican Joni Ernst and a handful of other senators wrote a letter asking the A-T-F to “swiftly review” its permitting of bump stocks which “turn semi-automatic rifles into fully automatic weapons.” Senator Chuck Grassley isn’t rejecting the idea the Senate Judiciary Committee might hold a hearing on legislation that would ban the sale of bump stocks. Grassley, though, has said he needs to “think through” the consequences since a bill that clears his committee could spawn a debate on the senate floor on a number of OTHER gun-related proposal.

Republican Congressman Steve King tweeted on the “slippery slope” subject last Wednesday, asking: “How do good people defend themselves from murderers if liberals take our guns?” The National Rifle Association last week called for an administrative review of the 2010 A-T-F decision that legalized the sale of bump stocks.

This fall’s first freeze warnings & frost advisories are posted for late tonight

News, Weather

October 9th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

For the first time this season, parts of Iowa are under a Freeze Warning and residents in the far northwestern counties will need to take precautions if they hope to save their flowers and garden vegetables. Meteorologist Mike Fuhs, at the National Weather Service bureau in Sioux Falls, says the Freeze Warning runs from midnight tonight (Monday) through 9 A-M on Tuesday.  “In Lyon County, up in the far northwest corner, we are expecting temperatures to dip down to 32-degrees or less,” Fuhs says. “In the Frost Advisory counties, we are expecting a bit more mild temperatures with readings dropping down into the 33- to 34-degree range.”

Neighboring Osceola and Sioux counties are the ones under the Frost Advisory. Iowans in those areas who have still have blooming flowers, tomatoes on the vine or other tender vegetation, should cover those plants tonight with sheets, blanket or styrofoam cones. “This is the type of a freeze and frost that should -not- get down to the 20-to-25-degree range which would just kill everything,” Fuhs says. “Staying in the upper 20s and lower 30s, if you cover your vegetation up, it’s possible it will survive until the next freeze.”

While parts of central Iowa saw highs on Sunday in the 80s, Fuhs says that weather is gone for now, as a mostly-chilly week is ahead. “We’re looking at near-normal to just below-normal temperatures,” Fuhs says. “They will modify a little bit so we’re not expecting any more in the way of frost and freeze for the rest of the week but by the same token, it will have a difficult time warming up. Our warmest day of the week will probably be Thursday when temperatures get up into the upper 60s.”

Parts of central and southern Iowa may see highs in the low 70s on Thursday. Tonight’s first freeze for northwest Iowa is right on schedule, he says, as it usually arrives within the first ten days of October.
