October 24th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

One person was transported by ambulance to the hospital Monday afternoon, following a collision between an SUV and a van, in Creston. Creston Police say the driver of the SUV, 43-year old Jennifer Lynette Byrd, of Diagonal, was transported to the Greater Regional Medical Center (GRMC) in Creston, to be checked for injuries, after she complained of pain following the collision. Byrd was traveling west in the far right lane of Highway 34 just before 1-p.m., at the same time a 2016 Chrysler Town and Country van driven by 88-year old Ruby Marjorie Stephens, of Shannon City, was traveling south on Cherry Street. Stephens stopped at the posted intersection, looked, but did not see Byrd’s approaching 2015 Chevy Equinox.

As Stephens started across the intersection, Byrd did not have time to stop and avoid the collision. The SUV hit the van broadside, causing a total of $9,000 damage. Authorities say Stephens was at fault for failure to yield the right of way, but no citations were issued.

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — While the Chiefs spent the weekend ruing a last-play loss to the Raiders, they could at least take solace in another dazzling performance from Kareem Hunt. But the Chiefs also must be mindful of the wear and tear on their rookie running back, who is on pace to finish with nearly 300 carries this season.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — A week after 23rd-ranked Iowa State struggled to beat Army at home in September 2005, it fell out of the Top 25. It would take a dozen years and three different head coaches for the Cyclones to finally return to the national rankings. Iowa State climbed back into the Top 25 at No. 25 on the strength of three straight wins, including victories at Oklahoma and Texas Tech. A huge tests comes Saturday at home against No. 4 TCU.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska running back Tre Bryant, who missed the last five games because of a knee injury, will have surgery that likely will end his season. Coach Mike Riley says the surgery is scheduled for Tuesday. The sophomore from St. Louis may be a candidate to get a season of eligibility back by petitioning for a medical redshirt. The Cornhuskers play at Purdue this Saturday.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Jose Oquendo will return to his role as third base coach for the St. Louis Cardinals next season. Oquendo stepped aside after 16 seasons as the St. Louis third base coach because of health problems prior to the 2016 season. The Cardinals finished third in the National League Central this season and missed the playoffs for the second straight year.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsin will host a free exhibition basketball game against Northern Iowa on Nov. 1. Tipoff is 7 p.m. at Kohl Center. The game will raise money for hurricane relief in the southern U.S. and the Caribbean. While admission is free, tickets must be secured online at UWBadgers.com.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) — Purdue has scored only 21 points and one touchdown in its past 120 minutes in a 17-9 loss at Wisconsin and a 14-12 loss at Rutgers. Coach Jeff Brohm is hoping to settle on a starting quarterback after using both David Blough and Elijah Sindelar. The Boilermakers host Nebraska on Saturday night.

Here is the latest Iowa news from The Associated Press at 4:15 a.m. CDT

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa has withdrawn its request with the Trump administration to opt out of the Affordable Care Act and redirect federal money toward lowering premiums for younger participants in a single state-run program. The idea was designed to stabilize health care insurance in the state, making premium costs based on age in addition to income. Just one company _ Minnesota-based Medica _ plans to provide policies next year with an anticipated 58 percent increase in premiums.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — The Iowa Board of Regents has chosen the dean of Iowa State University’s agriculture college as the school’s next president. The board Monday appointed Wendy Wintersteen as Iowa State’s 16th president, filling a position left vacant when Steven Leath took a job as president of Auburn University. The 61-year-old Wintersteen has been dean of the agriculture college since 2006. Her contract is for five years. She’ll be paid $525,000 in her first year, rising to $590,000 by year three

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — Iowa Department of Transportation officials are convinced that blue and white emergency lights on snow plows are effective at reducing crashes, and they’re going to seek a change in state law to permanently allow the lights. KCRG-TV reports the department started a test project in 2015 to see if switching to blue and white lights would reduce crashes. The agency found a big drop after the blue and white lights were installed and now will seek to always use the new lights during the winter.

DUBUQUE, Iowa (AP) — Authorities say two people were sent to a hospital after a fire filled a Dubuque basement with smoke. Firetrucks were dispatched to the home a little before 12:05 a.m. Sunday. A Dubuque Fire Department news release says the residents had been working on the building furnace an hour before the fire broke out.

Wind Advisory for the KJAN listening area through late this afternoon

Weather

October 24th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

The National Weather Service in Omaha and Des Moines have issued Wind Advisories, which are in effect until 4-p.m. for the far west and southwest counties, and until 6-p.m. for Cass and other area counties in western/central Iowa.

Northwest winds will be from 25 to 35 mph, with sustained gusts to 50 mph and higher at times.

Wind Advisory until late Tuesday afternoon for counties in light brown.

Winds will cause difficulty controlling any fires that ignite, such as in fields where harvest operations are in progress. High-profile vehicles may experience hazardous travel. Loose outdoor objects may blow around in the wind.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…

A Wind Advisory means that winds of 30 to 39 mph are expected for an hour or more, or wind gusts of 45 to 57 mph for any duration. Winds this strong can make driving difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. Use extra caution.
