DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — An Iowa man has been charged with selling fraudulent life insurance policies and keeping the money. The Des Moines Register reports that 59-year-old Roger Duane Goodwin is facing seven federal charges of mail fraud.

Prosecutors say that between 2013 and August 2016, Goodwin recommended life insurance to several clients and then deposited their premium checks in a personal bank account. Authorities say the Windsor Heights man used part of the money for his personal expenses and some of it to repay other clients or make payments to insurance companies on behalf of other clients.

Goodwin’s case is tentatively scheduled for trial on April 2. His attorney didn’t immediately respond to a message Sunday afternoon.

Iowa agency reduces Medicaid oversight requirements in bill

News

February 11th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — An Iowa health agency is proposing to roll back requirements in its oversight of the state’s privatized Medicaid program, a move that comes amid growing public scrutiny over the department’s plans to improve the program.

The Department of Human Services requested a bill be filed last week in the Legislature that would reduce how often it must report performance data on the health care program for the poor and disabled. The legislation would also remove some consumer protection metrics and eliminate a requirement that the agency report its expected savings under the privatized system.

The department insisted the bill will not worsen transparency and is aimed at more flexibility in presenting data to the public.

The wide-ranging proposal surprised lawmakers, both Republican and Democrat, who worked to enact oversight provisions in 2016 when the program was turned over to private insurance companies.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Keita Bates-Diop had 14 points and eight rebounds, and No. 14 Ohio State beat Iowa 82-64 on Saturday for sole possession of first place in the Big Ten. Kaleb Wesson added 18 points and C.J Jackson scored 14 for the Buckeyes (21-5, 13-1 Big Ten), who were 9 for 20 from 3-point range. Leading scorer Tyler Cook had just eight points for the Hawkeyes (12-15, 3-11).

The Hawkeyes have lost three straight games and sit two games behind 10th place in the Big Ten, meaning they would be one of four teams to play on the first day of the conference tournament. Iowa plays at No. 20 Michigan, on Wednesday.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Kaylee Jensen scored 16 straight points in the fourth quarter for Oklahoma State and finished with a career-high 35 and the No. 22 Cowgirls held on to defeat Iowa State 81-73 on Saturday night after giving up a 26-point lead.

Jensen steadied Oklahoma State (18-6, 9-4 Big 12) after Iowa State (10-14, 4-9) cut a 26-point deficit late in the second quarter to two points with a 30-12 third quarter. Jensen went 5 of 6 from the floor and 6 of 6 from the foul line.

Despite Jensen, the Hawkeyes were within 76-73 after Bridget Carleton’s jumper with 46 seconds left. Then Rae Johnson blocked a shot by OSU’s Loryn Goodwin out of bounds with 19.3 seconds left. With just a tick on the shot clock, Braxtin Miller received the inbounds pass and hit a 3-pointer, which was ruled in time after a lengthy video review. ISU then turned the ball over and the Cowgirls added two more free throws.

The Cyclones tied the school record with 30 points, helped by six 3-pointers, in the third quarter. The record was established when they won 78-69 at Oklahoma State last month. Jensen finished 12 of 18 from the field, 11 of 14 from the line and had 12 rebounds. Goodwin had 23 points and Miller 11.

Madison Wise had a career-high 21 for Iowa State and Emily Durr had 19.
