Wade leads Kansas State to 78-66 win over Iowa State

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — A week ago, in the same arena, the Kansas State Wildcats were tied at the half with Texas Tech and could not close the deal. They were presented with the same opportunity on Saturday this time they did close the deal.
Dean Wade nearly grabbed a triple-double in Kansas State’s 78-66 victory over Iowa State. Wade shot 9 of 13 for 22 points while grabbing eight rebounds and collecting nine assists.

Joining Wade in double-figure scoring was Barry Brown, who scored 16 second-half points for a total of 20, and Xavier Sneed, who scored 17 points on seven shots. After a slow start, Iowa State (13-13, 4-10) managed to get the game close and tied it several times but could not ever capture the lead. Cameron Lard scored 15 points on 7-of-12 shooting for the Cyclones.

The loss by Iowa State will guarantee that the Cyclones will have a losing conference record for the first time in three seasons under coach Steve Prohm.

Indiana rallies, holds off Iowa 84-82

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Indiana survived one of its strangest games of the season and kept its winning streak alive with the Big Ten tournament less than two weeks away. Still, the Hoosiers needed a record-setting performance from Robert Johnson to hold off the reeling Hawkeyes.

Johnson scored a career-high 29 points on nine 3s, which tied the school record, and Indiana rallied from an early 13-point deficit and beat Iowa 84-82 for its fourth straight victory.

Devonte Green had 18 points on four 3s for the Hoosiers (16-12, 9-7 Big Ten), who also blew a 13-point lead before Freddie McSwain Jr. hit the game-winning basket on a layup with 46 seconds left.

Tyler Cook was really good for Iowa (12-17, 3-13), scoring 28 points and 10 rebounds. But he missed a put-back at the buzzer that would’ve forced overtime. The Hawkeyes have lost five straight.

The Hawkeyes can score with anyone. It’s their defense that’ll need to be fixed in the offseason. The Hoosiers were wide open on many of those tries beyond the arc, allowing multiple players beyond Johnson to get into a groove from the perimeter, but McCaffery was especially frustrated about his team’s defense on Johnson and Green. Still, Iowa deserves credit for making a game of it until the final buzzer sounded.

Iowa plays at Minnesota on Wednesday.

(Update 3:55-a.m., 2/18) — The Iowa State Patrol responded to numerous crashes Saturday on the Interstates, due to a quick moving snow system that caused roads to become snow covered and icy. I-35 near the 100 mile marker southbound (in Polk County) was closed for 2 hours for a 70 car pile-up.  Approximately 11 people were transported to local hospitals for treatment of injuries.

I-80 near the 158 mile marker westbound (in Jasper County) was temporarily closed for approximately 20 vehicles that had crashed. I-80 eastbound at the 208 mile marker (in Iowa County),  up to 30 vehicles were involved with 3 minor injuries reported.  Eastbound lanes were closed for less than an hour.

A majority of the crashes were caused by motorists traveling too fast for conditions and not allowing enough following distance. All crashes remain under investigation.
