GERALD EDWARD JONES, 79, of Flippin, AR (formerly of Walnut), died Feb. 20th in Mountain Home, AR. A Celebration of Life for GERALD JONES will be held 2-p.m. Saturday, April 28th, at the Monroe Methodist Church northeast of Walnut.
Burial will be in the Monroe Cemetery in Walnut (IA).

GERALD JOHN BISSEN, 92, of Earling, died Thursday, April 19th, at home. A Mass of Christian Burial for GERALD BISSEN will be held 10:30-a.m. Monday, April 23rd, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earling. Pauley-Jones Funeral Home in Harlan has the arrangements.
Visitation at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earling, is from 4-until 8-p.m. Sunday, April 22nd, with a Knights of Columbus Rosary at 4-p.m.
Burial will be in the St. Joseph’s Cemetery.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A combination of fees and parking difficulties could be prompting many food truck operators to abandon Des Moines and instead rumble off to the suburbs. The Des Moines Register reports the city of Des Moines has issued only three mobile vendor permits this year. That’s down from 15 permits last year and 21 permits in 2016. Food truck owners must pay $1,750 in permitting and parking fees to Des Moines annually and can only operate in specific locations.
That has led some vendors to leave downtown for suburban business parks where parking is free. Kevin Gollhofer says he gave up on street sales from his barbecue truck and has focused on catering. He says people like to see trucks downtown but don’t buy from them consistently.
An Atlantic resident, upset about a stolen cement yard ornament she’s owned for about 30-years, says if the person who took it returns it, undamaged, she won’t press charges. The woman, who resides in the 600 block of Elm Street, told KJAN News the 12-inch tall, black statue of a female “Hillbilly,” was taken sometime April 10th or early April 11th. And, while it’s only worth about $30, the sentimental value means much more to the woman from whom it was stolen.
The incident has been reported to the Atlantic Police Department, and the victim says a neighbor has surveillance video of the thief that police are reviewing. The woman promises that if the thief returns the statue in one piece, or can direct authorities to where it is, no charges will be filed.
ROSEMONT, Ill. — The Big Ten Conference revealed a breakdown of all 14 schools’ opponents for the 2018-19 Big Ten men’s basketball season on Thursday. Conference teams will compete in a 20-game conference schedule for the first time, playing seven teams both home and away and six teams once (three home and three away).
Iowa’s opponents for the upcoming season will include:
Home: Illinois, Maryland, Michigan
Away: Minnesota, Penn State, Purdue
Home/Away: Indiana, Michigan State, Nebraska, Northwestern, Ohio State, Rutgers, Wisconsin
Beginning with the 2018-19 season, the men will move to a 20-game scheduling format, while the women will move to an 18-game format. On the men’s side, each team will play seven opponents twice (home and away) and six opponents once (three home, three away). The women’s format will see teams play five opponents twice (home and away) and eight opponents once (four home, four away). In total, the new conference schedules will feature 140 men’s games (up from 126 games last season) and 126 women’s games (up from 112 games last season), resulting in an 11% and 13% increase, respectively.
Iowa women’s basketball opponents for the upcoming season will include:

Away: Indiana, Minnesota, Ohio State, Penn State

The National Football League released the full 2018 regular season schedules for all teams on Thursday night. The Kansas City Chiefs will be featured in five primetime television games this year.
Those primetime match-ups will include a Monday Night Football game on October 1st at the Denver Broncos. A Sunday Night Football game at the New England Patriots on October 14th. The Chiefs will play another Monday Night Football game in Mexico City against the LA Rams on November 19th. The Chiefs will also play a Thursday Night Football game on December 13th at the LA Chargers and follow that with another Sunday Night Football game on December 23rd at the Seattle Seahawks.

A two-state pursuit Thursday that began in Fremont County, ended in Nebraska with the suspect crashing into three sheriff’s department vehicles and an arrest. The Fremont County Sheriff’s Office reports 39-year old Jay Rickman, of Eagle, NE., was finally arrested with the assistance of a Fremont County K9 Unit. The incident began, when the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office received a call of a possible wanted subject staying at a hotel in Percival, Iowa. Deputies were advised the subject was possibly armed, and had made statements that he would kill law enforcement if they attempted to arrest him.
Deputies attempted to stop a 1999 Chrysler Sebring at the intersection of 195th Street and Highway 2, when the vehicle fled the area and traveled west on Highway 2 reaching speeds of about 115mph. The vehicle continued west on Hwy 2 into Nebraska, where Otoe County deputies began leading the pursuit. The vehicle attempted to turn north on Highway 43, west of Palmyra, NE., when it went out of control. The vehicle then rammed an Otoe County Deputy’s vehicle, causing disabling damage. The car then rammed a Fremont County vehicle, causing minor damage, and rammed a second Fremont County vehicle, causing extensive damage to the deputy’s vehicle and disabling the suspect vehicle.
Charges against Rickman are pending in Fremont County for Felony Eluding from law enforcement.
An update is expected this (Friday) afternoon on the search for a missing autistic boy in northeast Iowa. Law officers involved in the search, centered in Black Hawk County, are holding a news conference at 2 o’clock this afternoon. Reports indicate there is -no- news on the whereabouts of 16-year-old Jake Wilson. He walked away from his home in LaPorte City almost two weeks ago, the night of April 7th. Hundreds of volunteers had joined in the search, which was scaled back in recent days.

AMES, Iowa – Former Iowa State head football coach Earle Bruce, who led the Cyclones to three-straight eight-win seasons and two Bowl games, passed away early this morning at the age of 87.
Bruce was hired as the head football coach at Iowa State in 1973, replacing Johnny Majors, who left for Pittsburgh after the 1972 season.
Bruce, who arrived at Iowa State after directing Tampa to the 1972 Tangerine Bowl, led the Cyclones during one of their most prosperous periods in school history from 1973-78. He tallied a career 36-32 mark as the Cyclone mentor, but in his last three seasons (1976-78), the Cyclones went 24-11 and earned bowl bids in 1977 (Peach Bowl) and 1978 (Hall of Fame Bowl).
Bruce left Iowa State after the 1978 season to return to his alma mater Ohio State, replacing the legendary Woody Hayes. He won or shared four Big Ten titles in his nine seasons as the leader of the Buckeyes. He was the AFCA National Coach-of-the-Year in 1979.
A 2002 College Football Hall of Fame inductee, Bruce compiled a career 154-90-2 record as a head coach, which also included stops at Northern Iowa and Colorado State. In his 20 years as a head coach at the Division I-A level, he led his teams to 12 bowl appearances, including seven victories.
Bruce graduated from Ohio State in 1953 and earned his master’s degree from Kent State in 1963.
He was inducted into the Iowa State Hall of Fame in 2000.
