Atlantic Head Coach Ed DenBeste: “Beautiful day today.  First nice day of the year.  No wind and warm.  Ben has continued his great play.  Good to see him shoot even today.  Matt started with a three over but finished even par after that to shoot +3.  Both guys below 40 is good at Harlan.  Great to see Mason shoot 45.  Nice score for him with one bad hole.  Austin, Drey, and Braden had some struggles but also some good holes.  Good experience for them to play an away course.  I know they will continue to work on their games.  This was a good win for us while missing several of our golfers tonight.  Hope we can keep this up for tomorrow’s match.  We were missing a few tonight with sickness and FFA convention.  Nice to see several others step up today in their absence.”

Burlington losing around 125 jobs to plant closure

News

April 24th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

BURLINGTON, Iowa (AP) — Siemens says it will be closing its Burlington plant in southeast Iowa by the end of the year. The Hawk Eye reports that the closing was announced Monday will cost about 125 people their jobs. The entire facility will be closed, including the operations of Dresser-Rand. The steam turbine manufacturer has operated in Burlington for nearly 150 years.

Siemens blamed the closing on the need to reduce costs in the face of “competitive pressures in the energy market.” Siemens’ wind turbine plant in Fort Madison will not be affected by cuts in Burlington.

SHENANDOAH, Iowa (AP) — A jury has convicted a Louisiana man whose pickup truck hit a bicyclist who was camping after a ride in Iowa. The Des Moines Register reports that 56-year-old Danny Cardin, of Homer, Louisiana, was found guilty of causing serious injury by vehicle but found not guilty of leaving the scene of a serious injury accident. His sentencing in the Fremont County Courthouse is scheduled for May 21.
An Iowa State Patrol report says James Foley, of Jacksonville, Florida, was sleeping in a tent at the 59er Motel & Campgrounds in Shenandoah on the night of July 17, 2016, when the pickup went off the driveway and struck the tent and him. Foley had been participating in the statewide biking event known as RAGBRAI.

April 24th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

A banner season continues for the women’s sports programs at Drake University. At the start of the week Bulldog women’s soccer, basketball, tennis and softball are a combined 47-0-1 against Missouri Valley Conference competition.

That’s Drake softball coach Rich Calvert. His team is riding a 21 game winning streak and is 18-0 in the Valley heading into Tuesday night’s game at home against Northern Iowa. The Bulldogs have a five game lead in the loss column on second place Missouri State with seven games remaining.

Pitching and defense have been keys. The Bulldog pitching staff has an earned run average of 1.08 in conference play and opponents are batting .176. Junior Nicole Newman has been dominant with a 9-0 record in the Valley but she has plenty of help. Freshman Nicole Timmons is 7-0 in the Valley.
