Deadline approaching for “Sleeping bags & Sharks Zoo Overnight” sponsored by East Pott. 4-H

The East Pottawattamie County 4-H is offering an Omaha Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium overnight trip.  You’re invited to come camp out overnight with the sharks at the Zoo.  The campout is open to all area youth completing grades 4, 5, and 6.  The campout will be held on Saturday, June 16, 2018 where we will meet outside the Zoo entrance at 6:30pm.  The evening will consist of evening & morning zoo hikes, programing, snack, an overnight stay, breakfast, drinks and a souvenir campout patch.  Parents will pick up youth at the zoo entrance on Sunday morning at 9:00am where participating youth will then have a day pass into the zoo for Sunday.  Registration and health forms can be found on our website https://www.extension.iastate.edu/eastpottawattamie/news/sleeping-bags-sharks-zoo-overnight .

Registration forms and fees are due to the East Pottawattamie County Extension by April 30th.  All spots will be filled on a first come, first served basis.  A limited number of spots are available.

ISU tops Iowa in Cy-Hawk Softball tussle

AMES, Iowa — The University of Iowa softball team dropped a 4-2 decision to Iowa State Wednesday afternoon in the annual Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series game at the Cyclone Sports Complex.

The Hawkeyes jumped on Iowa State early, plating two runs in the top of the first. Sophomore Lea Thompson hit a leadoff single and stole second during Aralee Bogar’s at-bat. The freshman reached base on a walk and the pair scored on a single by senior Angela Schmiederer.

The home team responded in the bottom frame, scoring two runs on two hits against Iowa’s Allison Doocy. The Cyclones scored two unearned runs in the third to go ahead, 4-2. Iowa saw four more runners reach base, but were unable to score any more runs.

Schmiederer led the Hawkeyes at the plate going 2-for-3 with a single, a triple, and two RBIs.

Doocy (12-12) took the loss in the circle. The sophomore allowed two earned runs on four hits and struck out three in four innings. Kenzie Ihle pitched two scoreless innings in relief, striking out one and yielding only one hit.

Iowa’s loss gives Iowa State two points in the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series. Iowa currently leads Iowa State, 13-12, with two academic points to be decided in May.

UP NEXT

The Hawkeyes hit the road for a weekend series at Northwestern beginning on Friday at 4 p.m. (CT). Game two of the series is slated for Saturday at 1 p.m. with the finale scheduled for Sunday at noon.

Fire Danger in Shelby County continues to be HIGH through Monday

Shelby County Emergency Management Coordinator Bob Seivert reports, the local fire Danger will remain HIGH through Monday. If you plan to burn, PLEASE, contact your local Fire Chief.   Seivert says they have had several fire dispatches in the last few days where the volunteers are called from home and work to respond to a fire, only to arrive and find someone has started a controlled burn, and not called their local Fire Chief or Emergency Management 911. He asks persons planning a controlled burn, to “Please respect the time our volunteers spend protecting your property. Plan your burn in advance, use a burn plan, and call in prior to starting. 712-755-2124.”

Seivert warns also, that the chances for severe weather are expected to increase next week, so be prepared for weather bulletins and to take cover when warnings are issued.

Graceland Univeristy’s Doty leaves for Emporia State, Hoff promoted to new Head Coach

Graceland University in Lamoni will have a new Head Men’s Basketball Coach next season coming off their first ever NAIA DI Men’s Basketball National Championship this past season. Craig Doty has left the program to become the Head Coach at Emporia State University in Emporia, KS.

Doty lead the Yellowjackets to back to back 20+ win seasons including a 29-10 record this past season on their way to the National Title.

Graceland announced on Wednesday that Associate Head Coach Cory Hoff has been promoted to be the next Head Men’s Basketball Coach for the Yellowjackets effective immediately.

Hoff has been on the Graceland staff the past two seasons and prior to that spent four years as the lead assistant at Mesa Community College in Arizona.

Former Iowa standout Horner to be introduced as new Head Coach at Truman State

Former Iowa standout point guard Jeff Horner has been named the new Head Men’s Basketball Coach at Truman State University in Kirksville, MO. He is set to be introduced to the campus community in a meet and greet this morning at 10:00am in the Student Union Building.

Horner comes to Truman State after a four-year stint at the University of North Dakota. He served as UND’s director of operations for one season before becoming an assistant coach from 2015-2018. Horner also had previous coaching stops at Grand View University as an assistant for one year and head coach at West Des Moines Valley High School for three seasons.

Horner is still Iowa’s all-time leader in assists and three-pointers made. He played professionally in four stops from 2006-2009 after his Iowa career.

Horner takes over the Bulldog program from Chris Foster who resigned to take the head coaching position at McKendree University. Truman State was 20-11 in the 2017-18 campaign.

IGHSAU releases singles and doubles tennis regional assignments

The Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union released the regional tennis pairings for singles and doubles competition on Tuesday. Regional play will be held on Wednesday, May 16th at 9:00am.

Most area teams will be in Class 1A Region 1, Region 2, and Region 3.

South Dakota store robbery suspect apprehended in Iowa

MITCHELL, S.D. (AP) — A man accused of robbing a gas station in Mitchell, South Dakota, earlier this month has been arrested in Davenport, Iowa. Police last week issued an arrest warrant for 18-year-old Montez McClain after viewing surveillance camera video and investigating other leads. The Daily Republic reports McClain was apprehended Wednesday. Police say a man walked into the Easy Come Easy Go store on April 12, threatened the clerk and fled with about $800 in cash. He did not display a weapon. McClain was wanted for second-degree robbery, which carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $20,000 fine.

The Glenwood girls and Lewis Central boys came out on top at the Heartland Christian Golf Invite at Fox Run on Wednesday. Rachel Schafer of East Mills was the girls medalist with a round of 93. Bryson Duncan of Southwest Iowa was the boys medalist with an 80.
