Officials ID western Iowa man killed in 3-vehicle crash near Papillion, NE

PAPILLION, Neb. (AP) — Authorities say an Iowa man died after his car collided with two other vehicles at an intersection near an Omaha suburb. The crash occurred about 4:30 p.m. Monday just south of Papillion.

The Sarpy County Sheriff’s Office says a car driven by 63-year-old Kevin Lingren, of Malvern, Iowa, was attempting to turn left when it was hit by a northbound sport utility vehicle. A third vehicle was also hit in the collision.

Lingren was pronounced dead at the scene. The two other drivers, both from Nebraska, were not injured.

AtlanticFest deemed a Success

Officials with the Atlantic Area Chamber of Commerce have proclaimed this past weekend’s AtlanticFest a success. Saturday’s event was sponsored by First Whitney Bank & Trust. The community wide celebration had something for everyone and brought the entire community together. The annual festival also serves as a fundraiser for the Atlantic Area Chamber of Commerce.

Bailey Smith, Executive Director at the Atlantic Area Chamber of Commerce said “AtlanticFest 2018 was another great success and we have received an overwhelming amount of positive comments from business owners, volunteers, participants and vendors. Events like this one are successful when generous sponsors, dedicated volunteers and the overall community come together to show their support. First Whitney Bank is a great partner to have to continue making AtlanticFest successful year after year.”

The annual Road Race kicked off AtlanticFest with 121 racers, filling west 6th Street. HyVee provided free fruit and ATI Physical Therapy provided free pre- and post-race stretching. The overall winners included Craig Becker and Jazzy Dagel in the two-mile race, Jalen Petersen and Taylor McCreedy in the five-mile race, and Laney Brosam was our fastest two-mile walker for the day. The annual Tractor Ride started at the Cass County Fairgrounds and toured Pro Rail and Arnie’s Artwork. The riders were then treated to lunch at Dvorak Tire & Service. This year, around 40 tractors participated.

Crafters filled west 5th Street, bringing in a great crowd. This year, 35 crafters took part in AtlanticFest, bringing a variety of items for community members to enjoy. Food vendors also filled City Park and were placed throughout Chestnut Street.

Olsen’s Outdoor Power and Plastic Professionals were the presenting sponsors of the Motorcycle Show and was coordinated by Michael Magers and Kolby Hansen. 45 bikes entered the show, bringing a great variety of motorcycles to town for enthusiasts to enjoy. ROCKY CROWDER, 64, of Oakland, died Monday, Aug. 13th, at home. A Prayer service for ROCKY CROWDER will be held 5:30-p.m. Friday, Aug. 17th, at the Rieken Vieth Funeral Home in Oakland.

Visitation with the family will follow the prayer service until 8:00 PM.

Interment will be at a later date.

A memorial fund has been established in Rocky’s name.

His children: Jason (Brandie) Slack, of Council Bluffs; Sara (Bryce) Coleman, of Gilbert, AZ; Bailey (Robbie) Vidales, of Gilbert, AZ, and Thayne Crowder, of Raleigh, NC.

His sister – Tami (David) Wright, of Oakland.

His brother – Randy (Jeanette) Crowder, of Woodland Hills, CA.

4 grandchildren,  other relatives, and friends.

Fatal accident in N.W. IA Monday afternoon

A collision between a full-size pickup and a car at an uncontrolled intersection in northwest Iowa’s Calhoun County, Monday afternoon, caused the death of one person and resulted in injuries to two other people. The Iowa State Patrol reports 63-year old Marlin Duane Bigelow, of Rockwell City died, after being flown from the scene to a hospital in Des Moines. A passenger in his 2009 Dodge Ram pickup, 61-year old Angie Marie Bigelow, and the driver of a 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix, 19-year old Cole James Bush, both of Rockwell City, were transported to an area hospital.

The accident happened at around 4:30-p.m. at the intersection of Langley Avenue and 320th Street, southwest of Rockwell City. All of the crash victims were wearing their seat belts.

Officer involved fatal shooting in Creston

Officials with the Iowa Department of Public Safety, Tuesday, released a report on an Officer-involved shooting in Creston. The incident began at around 11:55-p.m. Monday, when the Union County Dispatch Center received a 911 call in reference to a report of a male subject with a gun sitting on a bench in McKinley Park, in Creston. The Creston Police Department and the Union County Sheriff’s office responded to McKinley Park.

Upon arriving in the area, law enforcement members located a male subject on a bench in McKinley Park.  Law Enforcement officers confronted the male subject and tried speaking with the male subject for several minutes.  The male subject advanced on law enforcement officers who ordered the male subject to stop and show his hands.  The male subject refused to obey the orders of the officers and then advanced quickly on the officers.  An officer with the Creston Police Department engaged the subject and fired his weapon striking the male subject.  The subject was given medical aid immediately but later died from his injuries.

The body has been transported to the Iowa Office of the State Medical Examiner in Ankeny, where an autopsy will be conducted tomorrow (Wed., August 15th). The officer involved in this incident has been placed on paid administrative leave per Creston Police Department Policy until the completion of the investigation.

The Creston Police Department is being assisted in the investigation by Agents from the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation and the Crime Scene Team from the DCI Criminalistics Laboratory. No additional information will be released at this time.

Pet organization discovers abandoned dogs in Iowa forest

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A pet rescue organization has been finding and treating unwanted dogs that have been dumped in a central Iowa forest.

AHeinz57 Pet Rescue and Transport CEO Amy Heinz says her organization discovered last week that dogs were routinely dumped in the forest, abandoned by people who no longer wanted them.

The Des Moines Register reports that the organization was able to trap seven dogs over the weekend, but 20 more are still gathered in packs in the forest.

Several of the dogs have fresh wounds. Heinz says they are being treated for ticks and Lyme Disease. She declined to release the name of the forest out of fear people will try looking for the dogs.

Abandoning pets is illegal in Iowa and is considered a simple misdemeanor under state code.

Elderly female missing in Adams County

The Adams County Sheriff’s Office and multiple other agencies are searching for a missing person. The individual went missing at approximately 10-p.m. Monday, and was traveling in an unknown direction from the 1400 Block of Poplar in northern Adams County.

The individual is an elderly female wearing a blue nightgown and shoes. If you have any information or see anything, please call dispatch at 641-322-4444, or 911 right away.

Guthrie County Sheriff’s Office investigating death of 11-month-old boy

The Guthrie County Sheriff’s Office reported on Tuesday that they are investigating the death of an 11-month-old boy in Bagley.

On Friday, August 10th at approximately 8:19pm the Guthrie County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call about an unresponsive 11-month-old boy at 300 1st Avenue in Bagley. The mother, Seaira Briceno, said that she had been giving her son a bath and left him unattended for a short time. She then found him unresponsive in the tub. CPR performed on the boy was unsuccessful.

The Guthrie County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the incident.

The Atlantic Police Department released a report Tuesday on old arrests.

On Saturday, August 4th 36-year-old David Richman of Atlantic was arrested for Public Intoxication 3rd Offense. He was taken to the Cass County Jail and booked in.

On Friday, August 3rd 34-year-old Justin Case of Council Bluffs was arrested for OWI. He was booked in to the Cass County Jail.

On Wednesday, August 1st 29-year-old Justin Patton of Liberal, KS was arrested for Possession of Marijuana, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and on a Cass County Warrant for Violation of Probation. He was booked in to the Cass County Jail.

On Sunday, July 29th 63-year-old Douglas Burmeister of Hancock was arrested for OWI. He was booked in to the Cass County Jail.

On Saturday, July 28th 42-year-old Amanda Bashor of Atlantic was arrested for Child Endangerment and Interference with Official Acts. Also arrested that day was 25-year-old Mychia-Haley Blackburn of Griswold for OWI. Both were booked in to the Cass County Jail.

On Wednesday, July 25th 37-year-old Sonya Mills of Atlantic was arrested for Possession of Marijuana and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. She was booked in to the Cass County Jail.

On Monday, July 23rd 32-year-old Prudence Page of Atlantic was arrested on a Cass County Warrant for Unauthorized use of a Credit Card. She was booked in to the Cass County Jail.

On Sunday, July 22nd 34-year-old Gwynne Sorensen of Atlantic was arrested for OWI. She was booked in to the Cass County Jail.

On Thursday, July 19th 31-year-old Jared Joyce of Atlantic was arrested for Disorderly Conduct. He was booked in to the Cass County Jail.
