Red Oak man arrested after Saturday morning accident

News

June 10th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

The driver of an SUV was arrested following an investigation into an accident that took place Saturday morning. The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office says 39-year old Joshua D. Mohn, of Red Oak, was taken into custody for Driving While License Suspended, after the 2005 Dodge Durango he was driving struck the rear of a trailer being pulled by a pickup.

The accident happened at around 7:24-a.m., on Highway 34, just east of M Avenue. Authorities say a westbound 2014 Chevy pickup owned by New Balance Commodities and driven by 44-year old Todd Drake, of Nodaway, was pulling a 2005 Feather Lite trailer owned by Nodaway Valley Feeders. When Drake slowed for a flag person at the beginning of a construction zone, the trailer was struck by Mohn’s SUV, causing $3,000 damage to both the trailer and the Durango.

Mohn was transported to the Montgomery County Law Enforcement Center and held on a $300 bond for Driving While Suspended. No injuries were reported.

Iowa high court: Sioux City within rights to ax firefighter

News

June 10th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – A divided Iowa Supreme Court has ruled that Sioux City was within its rights to fire a longtime firefighter, reversing the order of a lower court to reinstate the firefighter. The Sioux City Journal reports the 5-2 decision stems from the firing of former Master Firefighter Larry Whitwer.

Whitwer pleaded guilty in 2012 to domestic abuse assault and signed a “last-chance agreement” that allowed him to keep his job unless he violated the law or a no-contact order. In 2013, Whitwer was fired after being arrested for violating the no-contact order.

A judge ruled in 2015 that Whitwer’s “last-chance agreement” was still subject to review and approval by the Civil Service Commission. On Friday, the state Supreme Court cited legal precedent in upholding the validity of last-chance agreements.

ST. LOUIS (AP) – Carlos Martinez struck out 11 in a complete-game shutout and the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 7-0 on Saturday. Jedd Gyorko drove in three runs for the Cardinals, who have won two straight against the Phillies after their seven-game skid on their recent road trip.

Martinez (5-5) allowed four hits and walked one in his first complete game and first shutout of his career. Martinez’s 101st pitch of the game was a 100 mph fastball that struck out Howie Kendrick for the second out in the ninth.

The Cardinals scored four runs in the fourth inning, tying their season high for runs in an inning. Gyorko opened the scoring with a two-run double off the right-center wall, after a leadoff walk by Dexter Fowler and a double by Stephen Piscotty. Gyorko scored on a balk by Nick Pivetta. Eric Fryer made it 4-0 with an RBI single.

Pivetta (1-3), making his sixth career start, allowed four runs and four hits in five innings, with four walks and two strikeouts.
