Mistrial declared in 1990 killing of 9-year-old girl

News

September 24th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) — The third trial in the 1990 killing of a 9-year-old girl has ended in a mistrial after jurors failed to reach a verdict after three days of deliberations.

The Quad-City Times reports a judge Monday declared the mistrial in the trial of Stanley Liggins. He’d twice been convicted of murder in the killing of 9-year-old Jennifer Lewis, of Rock Island, Illinois. Her burned remains were found Sept. 17, 1990, in a field in Davenport.

She had been sexually abused, strangled to death and then doused with gasoline and set on fire. Liggins knew Jennifer’s mother and investigators focused on him as a suspect. He was twice convicted and sentenced to life in prison, but both convictions were overturned.

The third trial was moved to Black Hawk County from Scott County because of pretrial publicity.

Victims of Missouri small plane crash identified

News

September 24th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

FESTUS, Mo. (AP) — Authorities have identified the men killed in an eastern Missouri plane crash as an American Airlines pilot and his son. Jefferson County Sheriff Dave Marshak on Monday said the victims were veteran pilot 56-year-old Michael Metzger of Hillsboro and 20-year-old Jacob Metzger of the state of Iowa.

The plane crashed about 2 a.m. Friday just a few hundred yards from the unlit airport in Festus, even as the pilot’s fiancee tried to guide it in with a flashlight. Michael Metzger was piloting the plane back from New York and reported electrical problems that prevented him from remotely activating the runway lights, which are turned off after working hours.

Marshak says the fiancee responded to the pilot’s texts and stood along the runway with a flashlight, but the plane crashed.

Ben & Jerry’s creating “take back Congress” flavors

News

September 24th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) — The founders of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream in Bernie Sanders’ home state are putting their ice cream expertise to work to support seven congressional candidates in the midterm elections who they call progressive.
Vermont’s Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield, known for their clever marketing and quirky flavors, are working with political action committee MoveOn to create ice cream flavors that reflect the values of each of the candidates. They are seeking the public’s help in naming the flavors. After picking winners, Cohen says he will make about 40 pints of each flavor by hand in his kitchen to be raffled off to support the candidates.

The candidates are Jess King in Pennsylvania, Lauren Underwood in Illinois, Aftab Pureval in Ohio, J.D. Scholten in Iowa, Ammar Campa Najjar in California, Stephany Rose Spaulding in Colorado and James Thompson in Kansas.

The flavors will be announced on a rolling basis starting on Oct. 7 at Iowa State University in Ames, according to a consultant working with Cohen and Greenfield. People can sign up starting Oct. 1 to enter the raffle to win the limited edition pints. Winners will be announced Nov. 1 and the ice cream will be shipped by mid-November.

Scholten’s campaign in Iowa wasn’t notified of the ice cream challenge. “It’s fantastic,” said Irene Lin, his campaign manager. “We’re very, very grateful,” she said, adding that supporters are having fun trying to come up with flavor names and ingredients.

It’s not the first time the ice cream makers have tried to sweeten a candidate’s campaign. Cohen created “Bernie’s Yearning” in 2016, during Sen. Sanders’ run for the Democratic nomination for president in 2016. The ice creams are not associated with the company, Ben & Jerry’s Homemade, Inc.

Nominate producers, marketers, and educators for 2018 Iowa Beef Quality Assurance Awards

September 24th, 2018 by admin

AMES, IOWA – Quality beef begins with quality care. The Beef Checkoff Program wants to recognize beef producers, marketers, and educators who diligently care for and properly handle cattle to provide consumers with safe and wholesome beef. Applications for Iowa’s 2018 Iowa Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) Awards are now being accepted.

BQA is a national program for beef cattle production that assures the highest standards of animal care and treatment. It was developed with guidance from leading animal health and well-being experts and outlines essential elements for cattle care. More than 90 percent of all U.S. beef is raised under the BQA program. (1)

The Iowa BQA program will recognize an outstanding cow/calf and feedyard beef producer, dairy producer, beef marketer, and/or educator/s who best demonstrate BQA practices, including sound animal husbandry practices. Nominees should be BQA certified and work to continually improve BQA on their operations while operating sustainable cattle businesses. The desire to encourage fellow producers to implement BQA and communicate what the industry is doing to ensure quality cattle care is a plus. The award is open to all segments of the industry – commercial cow-calf, seedstock, backgrounders, feedyards, dairy operations, auction markets operators/managers, veterinarians, and other educators.

“Beef Quality Assurance is becoming increasingly necessary to access markets in addition to being the right thing to do,” said Day Loy, Director, Iowa Beef Center. “The BQA awards program recognizes those that are going above and beyond the basic guidelines that help assure a safe, wholesome beef supply that is well cared for in the production process and enhancing our industry’s reputation.”

Completed entries are due by Friday, November 2, 2018. The Iowa BQA Award winners will be selected by a committee of fellow cattle producers, veterinarians, pharmaceutical representatives, and others who have a vested interest in the future of the beef industry.  Nominations can be submitted by any organization, group or individual on behalf of an Iowa beef producer or marketer. Individuals and families may not nominate themselves; however, the nominees are encouraged to be involved in the application process. Winners will be recognized during the Iowa Cattle Industry Leadership Summit and Annual Meeting held at the Prairie Meadows Event Center in Altoona, IA on December 6-7, 2018.
