They will face the winner of Sunday’s game between the Los Angeles Chargers and New England Patriots next weekend at Arrowhead Stadium. It will be the first AFC title game Kansas City has ever hosted.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Patrick Mahomes made good on the tremendous expectations placed on him, leading the Kansas City Chiefs past Indianapolis in the divisional round of the playoffs. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs coach Andy Reid was summoned to the corner of Arrowhead Stadium during the playoff game against the Indianapolis Colts to get fans to stop throwing snowballs on the field. FORT DODGE, Iowa — Fatalities were reported following a collision between two SUV’s southeast of Fort Dodge, Saturday evening. Dodge Fire and Rescue assisted at the scene.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Snow fell on parts of Iowa, Saturday, snarling traffic as the snow blanketed roads. Chiefs roll past Colts 31-13 to reach AFC title game; Reid not happy w/snowballs

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Patrick Mahomes picked apart the Colts in his postseason debut, the Chiefs defense answered their chorus of critics with a stout performance, and Kansas City rolled to a 31-13 victory over Indianapolis in the divisional round Saturday to end 25 years of playoff frustration.
Mahomes threw for 278 yards while running for a touchdown, and Damien Williams ran for 129 yards and another score, as the Chiefs beat Indianapolis for the first time in five playoff meetings to earn their first AFC title game appearance since January 1994.

The AFC West champions will play the winner of Sunday’s game between the division-rival Los Angeles Chargers and the New England Patriots next weekend for a spot in the Super Bowl in Atlanta. Andrew Luck was held to 203 yards passing for the Colts, while Marlon Mack was a non-factor on the ground. He had 46 yards rushing before leaving late in the fourth quarter with a hip injury.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid was summoned to the corner of Arrowhead Stadium during Saturday’s game, to get fans to stop throwing snowballs on the field. Reid wasn’t happy about it, either. The officials called him over from the Kansas City sideline during the two-minute warning in the first half, and Reid shouted and gestured at the fans in the lower deck — though the snowballs were mostly raining down from the upper deck, far above the field.

Earlier in the half, one almost hit Colts punter Rigoberto Sanchez during a kick. Reid’s intervention didn’t do much good, either. Patrick Mahomes scampered in moments later to give the Colts a 24-7 lead, and snowballs fell like confetti from the upper deck.

Junior Jordan Bohannon became the 48th player to score 1,000 career points with a free throw with 1:19 remaining in the game.  The guard finished with six points, but he had a game-high eight assists, matching a season-high.

Iowa returns to action Wednesday at Penn State. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. (CT) at the Bryce Jordan Center in University Park, Pennsylvania.

No. 11 Texas women hold on to edge No. 20 Iowa State 64-62

Sports

January 12th, 2019 by Ric Hanson

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Sug Sutton had 24 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists and Joyner Holmes had a big block as No. 11 Texas survived two missed shots in the closing seconds to edge No. 20 Iowa State 64-62 on Saturday. The Longhorns (14-2, 4-0 Big 12), who have won seven straight, used a 15-0 run in the third quarter to build a double-figure lead. The Cyclones rallied from 10 down in the fourth and had a chance to tie or win it at the end.

Iowa State made it a two-point game with 44 seconds left forced Texas into a shot-clock violation with 13.3 seconds to play. After a couple of timeouts, Holmes blocked a layup attempt by Alexa Middleton with five seconds to go. The Cyclones got the rebound but Bridget Carleton’s 15-footer was off the mark as time ran out.

Carleton led Iowa State (13-3, 3-1) with 20 points and Kristin Scott had 15, and both had nine rebounds. Texas shot 51 percent but had 17 turnovers. Iowa State shot just 34 percent with eight turnovers.

Barry Brown lifts Kansas State over No. 20 Iowa State 58-57

Sports

January 12th, 2019 by Ric Hanson

AMES, Iowa (AP) — No. 20 Iowa State appeared to have done just enough to survive on a snowy and sleepy Saturday in Ames. Barry Brown had other ideas. Brown hit a layup with four seconds left and Kansas State stunned Iowa State 58-57 on Saturday, handing the Cyclones their second straight loss.
Brown had 23 points to lead the Wildcats (12-4, 2-2 Big 12), who closed the game on a 10-2 run for their first road win of the year. Iowa State (12-4, 2-2) didn’t score over the final 2:42.

Iowa State, which hasn’t won since blowing out Kansas last week, was up seven with five minutes left. Brown hit two free throws with 16 seconds left to make it 57-56 Iowa State, and Lindell Wigginton missed the front end of a subsequent one-and-one for the Cyclones. Brown, who finished 9 of 20 from the floor, then drove through the paint for the winner — which came on the heels of a 21-point comeback against West Virginia in K-State’s last game.

Nick Weiler-Babb had 11 points and five assists to lead the Cyclones. Iowa State responded to its 77-60 win over the Jayhawks with a 73-70 loss at Baylor and a sloppy finish against the Wildcats. While K-State got Wade back, the Cyclones played with big man Cam Lard — who missed Saturday’s game with a sprained ankle. Iowa State also said after the game that fellow big man Solomon Young will miss the remainder of 2018-19 with a groin injury, and the Cyclones will seek a medical redshirt.

Iowa State is one of the 25 most talented teams in the country. But the Cyclones likely won’t be ranked as such on Monday. The Cyclones play No. 8 Texas Tech in a huge early league showdown on Wednesday.
