ST. LOUIS (AP) — Dakota Hudson pitched a career-high 7 2/3 innings, and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Cincinnati Reds 10-6 on Saturday in the opener of a doubleheader weekend.
Dexter Fowler and Yadier Molina homered as St. Louis won for the seventh time in eight games. Kolten Wong and Paul Goldschmidt each had two hits and two RBIs. Hudson gave the Cardinals a lift after the series opener was postponed by rain, setting up doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday. The NL Central leaders and the Reds also play afternoon games Monday against different opponents.

The Cardinals recalled left-hander Génesis Cabrera as the 26th man for Saturday’s doubleheader and will activate right-hander Daniel Ponce de Leon before his start in the nightcap of Sunday’s doubleheader. Both will stay with the club. St. Louis also announced outfielder Randy Arozarena, first baseman Rangel Ravelo, infielder Edmundo Sosa, right-hander Junior Fernandez, catcher Andrew Knizner, right-hander Mike Mayers will be called up from Triple-A Memphis. Fernandez, Knizner and Mayers will arrive Sunday, while Arozarena, Ravelo and Sosa will join the team Tuesday.

Right-hander Sal Romano was recalled from Triple-A Louisville as the Reds’ 26th man for the doubleheader. Cardinals OF Lane Thomas (right wrist fracture) was placed on the 10-day Injured list, and OF Tyler O’Neill (left wrist strain) was activated from the IL.

No. 21 Iowa State survives UNI in 3 OT, 29-26

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Sheldon Croney Jr. scored from a yard out in triple overtime and 21st-ranked Iowa State rallied to beat Northern Iowa 29-26 on Saturday. La’Michael Pettway had a pair of touchdown catches for the Cyclones (1-0), who barely survived the season’s first major upset after entering the year ranked for the first time since 1978. Croney fumbled near the goal line on the second-to-last play of the game. But quarterback Brock Purdy sprinted from the backfield to recover it at the 1 and set up the game-winning plunge.

After the teams traded field goals in the first overtime, Purdy found Pettway — a graduate transfer from Arkansas in his Iowa State debut — in the back of the end zone. But Northern Iowa pulled even at 23-all after freshman Will McElvain scrambled long enough to free up Trevor Allen for a 7-yard TD catch. Iowa State forced Northern Iowa into a field goal to start triple overtime, and Purdy completed three straight passes before pulling off what might end up being remembered as a season-saving recovery.

The Cyclones were the second ranked team to win an overtime game against an FCS opponent. Auburn held off Jacksonville State 27-20 in 2015. McElvain finished with 228 yards passing and a touchdown in his collegiate debut. Purdy threw for 278 yards, and Deshaunte Jones caught 14 passes for 126 yards for Iowa State. Part of the Cyclones’ struggles can be attributed to the fact that Northern Iowa isn’t the least bit intimidated about driving about 100 miles southwest to play them — in fact, the Panthers have three wins in Ames dating back to 2007. But Iowa State’s offense was so dreadful in the first half that it didn’t reach the red zone once, and it couldn’t put Northern Iowa away in the second.

Northern Iowa’s McElvain, a freshman from nearby Des Moines who was offered a walk-on spot by the Cyclones, looks like he’s got a bright future. His scramble to find Allen in double OT was one of the best plays of the young season.
POLL IMPLICATIONS
It’s very hard to imagine Iowa State maintaining its place in the Top 25 after that performance.

Iowa State has next week off. The Cyclones host No. 20 Iowa on September 14.
Northern Iowa: The Panthers host Southern Utah on September 7.

Iowa education leader hails work-based learning initiative

HOLLAND, Iowa (AP) — Businesses partnering with the state to provide real-world student learning opportunities are expected to boost career education for rural Iowa school districts. The state is using the recently unveiled Iowa Clearinghouse for Work-Based Learning to help students build job skills, the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reported.
Businesses, nonprofits and governmental organizations can post real-world tasks on a project board that students can then complete under the supervision of teachers. Teachers can also use it to connect students to job shadow, internship and apprenticeship opportunities.

“Really, it’s designed as a virtual space,” said Iowa Department of Education Director Ryan Wise. Wise said the program will broaden access to learning that hasn’t been available for some students, especially those in rural areas. Stacy Ascher, who coordinates credit course offerings at the outreach center, said it’s a huge resource that will help students in northeastern Iowa. Credit course offerings are in manufacturing, health care and agricultural fields as well as the liberal arts.

Ascher is already organizing some work-based learning for students at the center. Freshmen in all participating districts do manufacturing work site tours, where they learn about a variety of jobs at the business on and off the factory floor. Ascher said students in the area do between 250 and 300 job shadows each year and an average of 100 internships.

Wise said such learning opportunities can spark interest among young people in a way classroom lessons do not. “One of the biggest challenges I see in too many places is a lack of student engagement,” he said.

Now through Nov. 1st, Iowa eligible farmers can enroll in the America’s Farmers Grow Communities program, sponsored by Bayer Fund, for a chance to direct a $2,500 donation to a local eligible nonprofit organization of their choice.  Since 2010, the Grow Communities program has awarded more than $33 million to thousands of nonprofits across rural America. The donations will provide support to a variety of rural nonprofit organizations that have made a positive impact on the health and vibrancy of their local communities, such as food banks, emergency response organizations, community enrichment and youth agriculture programs, among many others. Since its inception in 2010, the Grow Communities program has awarded more than $33 million in donations to thousands of nonprofits nationwide. In Iowa alone, more than 1,150 monetary donations have been made to local nonprofits that positively impact communal well-being in farming communities.

Iowa farmers who are at least 21 years or older and are actively engaged in farming at least 250 acres of any crop can easily enroll in the Grow Communities program now through Nov. 1, 2019. Online enrollment, eligibility information and official rules can be found at www.AmericasFarmers.com or by calling 1-877-267-3332 toll-free. Winning farmers will be announced January 2020.
