Chiefs lose Hill, handle Jags 40-26 behind Mahomes, Watkins

Sports

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Despite losing star receiver Tyreek Hill early, Patrick Mahomes threw for 378 yards and three touchdowns while leading the Kansas City Chiefs to a testy and tactful 40-26 victory over the injury-riddled Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday.

Mahomes took a beating and even had to leave the game to get his left ankle taped in the second quarter. He nonetheless looked every bit as good as he did during last year’s MVP campaign, leading the Chiefs to scores on each of their first seven possessions.

Sammy Watkins caught nine passes for a career-high 198 yards and three TDs. Watkins slipped through the middle of Jacksonville’s defense for a 68-yard score on the third play of the season and added a 49-yard TD reception late in the opening quarter. He made defenders Ronnie Harrison, Jalen Ramsey and Miles Jack look silly while strolling into the end zone twice. He beat Ramsey again for a short TD in the fourth period.

Jacksonville had major issues on both sides of the ball, fairly reminiscent of last year’s 16-point loss at Arrowhead Stadium in Week 5. This one may have been more of a debacle — and maybe more costly.
Mahomes picked apart what some believed is an elite defense, throwing for 313 yards in the first half and doing most of it without Hill. The three-time Pro Bowler departed after landing on his left shoulder near the sideline.

But considerably more concerning for the Jaguars, they lost quarterback Nick Foles to a left shoulder injury in the opening quarter, and rookie linebacker Quincy Williams (knee) in the second half. Chris Jones hit Foles as he released a 35-yard TD pass to DJ Chark. Jones landed on top of Foles, but did not draw a flag.
Foles looked to be in pain as he walked to the sideline to be evaluated. He then jogged into the locker room for further tests and did not return.
The Jaguars gave Foles a four-year, $88 million contract in April with the belief he would solve the franchise’s two-decade-old search for a quarterback. He didn’t make it through a quarter, and now Jacksonville might have rookie Gardner Minshew under center for a stretch. Minshew was the team’s lone bright spot: He completed 22 of 25 passes for 275 yards, with two TDs and an interception.

The Jaguars already were without starting left tackle Cam Robinson (knee) and backup Cedric Ogbuehi (hamstring), leaving guard Will Richardson to make his first career start at a new position.
JACK EJECTED
Jaguars linebacker Jack was ejected in the second quarter after taking a swing at Chiefs receiver Demarcus Robinson. Jack had to be restrained by team officials and essentially pulled off the field.
Jack and receiver Sammy Watkins got into a shoving match after a fumble, and then Robinson came in and shoved Jack in the back. Jaguars cornerback Jalen Ramsey and others joined in, prompting officials to throw five flags and a hat onto the ground. Jack eventually got the boot after a lengthy discussion.
RARE FUMBLE
Jacksonville’s Leonard Fournette gained 66 yards on 13 carries and fumbled for the first time in his three NFL seasons. Damien Wilson stripped the ball out of Fournette’s hands after a catch in the flat.
It was Fournette’s first lost fumble since Nov. 12, 2016, during his junior year at LSU. That came at Arkansas.
UP NEXT
Chiefs: play at rival Oakland. Kansas City has won eight of the last nine in the series.
Jaguars: play at Houston. The Texans swept Jacksonville last season.

State Historical Society of Iowa’s mobile museum to visit Audubon

News

September 8th, 2019 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES – If you can’t make it to the State Historical Museum in Des Moines, why not let it come to Audubon? That’s the idea behind the State Historical Society of Iowa’s “History on the Move” mobile museum, a bright blue, custom-built Winnebago that travels the state’s highways and back roads to share stories from the past. The museum on wheels currently houses a 300-square-foot exhibition called “Iowa History 101” and is filled with artifacts from the State Historical Society’s collection.

The State Historical Society of Iowa’s “History on the Move” mobile museum will visit Audubon Sept. 15 during Fallapalooza. The public is invited to take free self-guided tours of the museum on wheels, which holds a 300-square-foot exhibition called “Iowa History 101.”

The mobile museum will offer free self-guided tours at the Nathaniel Hamlin Park & Museum, U.S. Highway 71 one mile south of Audubon during Fallapalooza, Sunday, Sept. 15th, from 10-a.m. until 4-p.m. State Historical Society of Iowa Administrator Susan Kloewer says “This exhibition shares some of the essential stories that every Iowan should know about who we are and what we’ve achieved since Iowa became a state more than 170 years ago. We’re delighted to bring this traveling exhibition to Audubon, and we encourage all Iowans to learn about our state’s rich heritage.”

Like a visit to a grandparent’s attic, the exhibition unpacks stories of Iowa’s past with nearly 50 artifacts, including:
  • battered miner’s cap worn by Carl Coghlan, a Marion County coal miner
  • 1917 prototype of the state flag designed by Dixie Cornell Gebhardt of Knoxville
  • pen Gov. William Harding used to ratify the 19th Amendment, giving women the right to vote
  • basketball jersey Lynne Lorenzen wore during her glory days at Ventura High School
  • Olympic medal from sprinter Natasha Kaiser-Brown of Des Moines
  • patch from a spacesuit worn by astronaut Peggy Whitson of Beaconsfield
As a bonus, Mike Wolfe, the creator and star of the hit television series “American Pickers,” lent his voice and video talents to the exhibition’s multimedia elements. A native of Le Claire, Wolfe has a long-standing interest in history and a knack for using artifacts to unlock its stories.
The idea for the mobile museum emerged in 2014 from a series of community conversations organized by the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs, which oversees the State Historical Society. Iowans who care deeply about history made it clear they want new ways to access the State Historical Museum’s resources.
Accordingly, the 38-foot Winnebago will visit all 99 Iowa counties over the course of three years, from 2017 through 2019, with stops at schools, libraries, local museums, community festivals, county fairs and other places where Iowans gather. Anyone who would like to request a visit can find the details online at iowaculture.gov, along with an updated schedule. (Follow the mobile museum’s statewide journey on Facebook at facebook.com/IowaHistory.)
The traveling exhibition – which is sponsored by EMC Insurance Companies, Casey’s General Stores and Iowa State University Extension and Outreach – is one of a trio of “Iowa History 101” shows. Visitors to the State Historical Museum in Des Moines can find both a traditional museum exhibition, plus an interactive “Hands-On History” gallery designed especially for children. More information is available at iowaculture.gov or 515-281-5111.

DII-member Truman St. takes down Drake 10-7

Sports

September 8th, 2019 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Lawrence Woods’ 87-yard kickoff return to start the second half helped propel Division II-level Truman State past Drake 10-7 on Saturday.

Despite their Division II status, the Bulldogs have a history of playing Drake (0-2) tough in the six times the programs have met. The last time the teams played was in 2014 at Drake Stadium. Drake needed overtime to win it after Conley Wilkins dove into the end zone to make it 13-7 on the first possession of the extra session. It was the first game between the two teams since 2002, and it snapped Truman State’s two-game winning streak.

On Saturday, Woods’ return gave Truman State a 10-0 lead. Later, Ian Corwin completed a 10-yard touchdown pass to Drew Lauer to trim the deficit after a six-play, 68-yard drive in a little more than 2½ minutes.

Truman State proceeded to hold Drake to just 76 yards of offense over its next four drives to end the game.
Corwin threw for 205 yards and was sacked five times.

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — Will McElvain threw for three touchdowns as Northern Iowa rolled past Southern Utah 34-14 on Saturday. McElvain had 262 yards passing for the Panthers (1-1). Trevor Allen ran for 77 yards on 17 carries.

McElvain hit Deion McShane for a 56-yard touchdown late in the first quarter and followed up early in the second with a 39-yard scoring throw to Isaiah Weston. Matthew Cook’s 45-yard field goal made it 17-0 with 7:54 left in the half and a 10-yard strike from McElvain to Jaylin James capped the first-half scoring with the Panthers up 24-0.

Cook added a 27-yard field goal to make it 27-0 early in the third quarter and later Nick McCabe ran for a score and the Panthers were up 34-0. Southern Utah scored late in the third on a 4-yard Chris Helbig run to close to 34-7 but failed to capitalize on two consecutive fumble recoveries in the fourth. Helbig managed another short touchdown run just before the end of the game for the final score.

Helbig finished with 126 yards passing for the Thunderbirds (0-2).
