Iowans celebrate as USMCA appears one step closer to ratification

Ag/Outdoor

December 11th, 2019 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) — Iowa politicians, commodity groups and Iowa’s business community are celebrating news of a deal that will lead to U.S. House ratification of a new trade agreement to replace NAFTA. Passage of the U-S-Mexico-Canada Agreement will close out 2019 with a win for farmers who’ve had a difficult year, according to the Iowa farmer who’s president of the National Corn Growers. Iowa Congresswoman Abby Finkenauer, a Democrat from Dubuque, says public confirmation of the deal just happens to come on the same day House Democrats announced articles of impeachment against the president.  “This was something that happened about yesterday,” Finkenauer says. “It sounds like we finally got the deal and the negotiation had worked itself out and just needed to get done and that’s why you see things playing out as they are today.”

Canada and Mexico are Iowa’s two largest trade markets. Iowa Congresswoman Cindy Axne, a Democrat from West Des Moines, says passage of the U-S-M-C-A provides certainty for Iowa farmers and manufacturers. Finkenauer says this final deal is “very different” from what was agreed to by the three countries in 2018. “Although I believe there was some really good intentions with the original USMCA about bringing jobs back home…there wasn’t a lot of enforcement to make that possible,” Finkenauer says.

Congressman Dave Loebsack, a Democrat from Iowa City, says Democrats won “robust enforcement mechanisms” that weren’t in the original U-S-M-C-A. Republican Senator Chuck Grassley says President Trump kept his campaign promise to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement and Grassley says Americans will reap many benefits from the new deal. Republican Senator Joni Ernst, though, says an end-of-the-year vote in the Democratically-led House is dangerous, because Republicans who lead the Senate won’t have time to hold a vote to ratify the U-S-M-C-A before 2020.

Congressman Steve King, a Republican from Kiron, says House Democrats “didn’t want to face criticism” so they announced a deal on the U-S-M-C-A on the same morning they revealed articles of impeachment. “I”m glad we’ve got USMCA moving,” King says. “The president’s doing his job. His economic numbers are great. Our national security is strong.”  King says House Democrats are trying to use passage of the U-S-M-C-A as “frosting” to cover up the impeachment saga.

DES MOINES, Iowa — Governor Kim Reynolds, Lieutenant Governor Adam Gregg and Department of Public Safety Commissioner Stephan Bayens have honored heroic citizens and First Responders at the 2019 Sullivan Brothers’ Award of Valor and Governor’s Lifesaving Awards ceremony held Tuesday morning in the Iowa Capitol Rotunda.  Among them was Matthew Van Baale, of Harlan, who won an Outstanding Service Award, which is presented to persons who have performed a courageous act in an attempt to save an individual who was in danger of losing his or her life or to individuals who unselfishly rendered service in a time of emergency.

Iowa DPS spokesman, Sgt. Alex Dinkla told KJAN News Van Baale was recognized for his heroic efforts following an ATV accident. Dinkla said on a cold, rainy March 29, 2017, a local farmer was working with his cattle, and in the process, his 4-wheeler overturned. The farmer suffered serious injuries. He tried to crawl out and obtain help on his own, but passed out due to his injuries. Minutes turned to hours. Dinkla says while Van Baale was driving in the area, he sensed something wasn’t right, and eventually found the man and called 9-1-1 to summon rescue personnel. “Thanks to his efforts and his determination that day, that gentleman is still with us today. Matthew was awarded the Governor’s Lifesaving Award for Outstanding Service.”

  • Meritorious, which is awarded to those individuals in recognition of courageous and unselfish service rendered during a time of distress.

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The offensive-minded Kansas City Chiefs leaned on their rapidly improving defense to beat the New England Patriots on Sunday. They held Tom Brady to 169 yards passing and the Patriots to 278 yards. They also made the crucial fourth-down stop as the Patriots were trying for the tying touchdown in the closing seconds, something they failed to do during last year’s AFC title game loss at Arrowhead Stadium. The result was clinching a fourth straight AFC West title and keeping alive their hopes for a first-round playoff bye.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Major League Baseball plans to hold its amateur draft in Omaha, Nebraska, ahead of the College World Series, a person familiar with the decision told The Associated Press. The draft will be held from June 10-12, and the College World Series is slated to start June 13. Baseball’s draft was long held by conference call at the commissioner’s office in New York. It was moved to Lake Buena Vista, Florida, for 2007 and 2008. Since 2009 the first round has been held at MLB Network studios in Secaucus, New Jersey.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Devon Dotson had 22 points along with nine assists to help No. 2 Kansas to an easy 95-68 win over Wisconsin-Milwaukee on Tuesday night. Ochai Agbaji also had 22 points while Udoka Azubuike had 15 points and 17 rebounds for the Jayhawks, who ran their home win streak to 26 games. They used a 40-12 run to start the game and basically put it away. Darius Roy led the Panthers with 25 points while leading scorer Te’Jon Lucas was held to just 11.

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — New Missouri coach Eli Drinkwitz is expressing confidence. At his introductory news conference, he predicted the Tigers would eventually win the SEC East and a bowl game. Drinkwitz was hired to replace Barry Odom, the former Missouri player whose program had slipped into mediocrity. Drinkwitz is coming off a 12-1 season at Appalachian State that included wins over North Carolina and South Carolina and a victory over Louisiana-Lafayette in the Sun Belt title game. He also has just one year of head-coaching experience.

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — Sporting Kansas City fulfilled its need for an elite striker by swinging a deal with Mexican club C.D. Guadalujara for Alan Pulido. He signed a four-year contract with the Major League Soccer club after it paid a club-record transfer fee. Sporting KC failed to make the playoffs last season for the first time in nearly a decade, and has spent the offseason overhauling its roster. The 28-year-old Pulido represents the biggest acquisition yet.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Ted Simmons can thank WAR, on-base percentage and other modern measures of baseball players for helping him reach the Hall of Fame 31 years after he retired. The eight-time All-Star catcher was elected to the Hall of Fame by a veterans committee after falling one vote short two years ago. Simmons received 13 of 16 votes when the modern era committee gathered ahead of the winter meetings. Also elected was former players union chief Marvin Miller. Simmons was primarily a catcher in a 21-year big league career spent with St. Louis, Milwaukee and Atlanta.

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) — An official with Menards confirms the home improvement store had purchased the Mall of the Bluffs in Council Bluffs and will tear down the structure to make room for a new store. Menards spokesman Jeff Abbott said Monday the company would build a “bigger and better store” at the site of the mall in eastern Council Bluffs, just off Interstate 80. Tenants of the mall told The Daily Nonpareil newspaper that they have been told to leave the mall by the end of the year or sooner. Abbott said the new store was needed because and existing one was “small and dated.” Menards is based in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Two French companies will pay the University of Iowa more than $1.1 billion to secure the rights to operate its utility system for the next 50 years under a plan approved Tuesday. The Iowa Board of Regents voted Tuesday to approve the deal with a newly-formed consortium made up of energy company ENGIE and investor and asset manager Meridiam. Gov. Kim Reynolds told the regents that it was a “historic day for higher education in Iowa.” She called it an innovative approach that will create revenue that help finance the school’s strategic plan. Critics have called the deal risky.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — An African man who was trying to build a new life in Cedar Rapids has spent the past 18 months at an Iowa City hospital, recovering from a traffic accident that killed two fellow immigrants. Jean-Claude Shako suffered head and other injuries in the June 25, 2018, collision while he and four other immigrants from the Democratic Republic of Congo were headed to work in Tama. WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) — A Waterloo woman has been given a 15-year sentence for scamming a couple out of thousands of dollars by saying she had a kidney transplant, tumors and other medical problems. Court records say 47-year-old Shawn Adams was sentenced Friday. She’s also known as Shawn Tomkins. Prosecutors say she got nearly $58,000 in aid from the Waterloo couple after telling them her tale of woe. Prosecutors say she accused one of one of them of sexually abusing her son when they discovered her scam.
