Democrats scour records for provocative comments

News

July 14th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Democratic Party researchers are scrubbing the past and current comments of Republican U.S. Senate candidates in hopes of finding rhetoric that might spook moderate or independent voters.

Democrats hope that controversial remarks by Republican candidates will help counter the upper hand the GOP has gained in many states, including many Midwestern states. Provocative comments about rape and abortion by Republican Senate candidates in Indiana and Missouri undermined their campaigns in 2012.

The best Democrats have come up with this year is in Iowa’s Senate campaign. They have called attention to Republican candidate Joni Ernst’s professed belief in a United Nations’ threat to American property rights. But there is no indication the issue has affected the closely contested race.

Members of the Elk Horn/Kimballton Board of Education will hold their final, regular Board meeting Monday beginning at 5-p.m., at the High School in Elk Horn, with the newly formed Exira-EHK Community School District School Board to meet about a half-an-hour later. Action items on their agenda include approval of: A Resolution of Execution of Quit Claim Deed; Delivery of Quit Claim Deed; A Resolution to merge Elk Horn-Kimballton’s assets, liabilities and equity, to the new district, and, approve the closing of bank accounts with the Shelby County State Bank and Landmans Bank.

Governors group skirts ‘radioactive’ Common Core

News

July 13th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – Facing opposition from staunch conservatives, the Common Core education standards designed to improve schools and student competitiveness are being modified by some Republican governors. They cite concern about the federal government’s role in the classroom.

The educational standards were not on the formal agenda during a three-day meeting of the National Governors Association in Nashville, but were discussed along the sidelines of the meeting.
Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad says the words, “Common Core,” have become “radioactive,” echoing a sentiment from tea party leaders who say the education plan amounts to a federal takeover of local education.

Governors in Indiana, South Carolina and Oklahoma have signed legislation to repeal the standards while Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal is taking steps to block the use of tests tied to the standards.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Lance Armstrong is again planning to join in on the 418-mile, 15-county bike ride across Iowa later this month. The Des Moines Register reports Armstrong plans to participate in his sixth RAGBRAI and even work as a guest bartender this Saturday in Rock Valley to help raise money for the northwest Iowa town of 3,400 hit by flooding.

Armstrong says he enjoys the Iowa ride because it gives him a chance to participate in cycling in a friendly environment. And he says the organizers of the Iowa event were the first to welcome him after he admitted he doped for all seven of his Tour de France wins from 1999-2005.

Up to 10,000 riders and another 10,000 followers are expected for the July 20-26 ride.
