Heeding Francis, Iowa Catholic leaders to pressure ’16 field

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Roman Catholic leaders in Iowa will call for candidates for president to follow the teachings of Pope Francis, and focus as much on the environment and income inequality in 2016 as they have in past elections on opposing gay marriage and abortion.

Bishop Richard Pates of Des Moines says the vocal pivot to be made Thursday will mark the first time a U.S. Catholic bishop has publicly asked those seeking the White House to heed the admonitions of Francis’ first encyclical. In it, the pope called for a “bold, sweeping revolution” to correct what he sees as a “structurally perverse” economic system that has turned the Earth into an “immense pile of filth.”

Says Pates: “The goal of the pope is to raise the questions with all the candidates.”

Western IA soldier who died in CO to be buried Monday

A soldier from western Iowa who died last month while on duty in Colorado, will be laid to rest Monday, in Pottawattamie County, according to the Daily NonPareil.

Officials with the Army at Ft. Carson, in Colorado Springs, said in a Press Release “Sgt. Matthew D. Reynolds died on post at Fort Carson on June 22. The incident is under investigation. According to a GoFundMe.com campaign set up by a friend, Reynolds’ death occurred during a training exercise, but Fort Carson officials declined to comment further beyond their original statement.

Reynolds was a 29-year old Carter Lake native, who joined the Army in July of 2008. He was deployed to Iraq from October of 2009 to June of 2010, and also served in Afghanistan, from August of 2013 through April of 2014. His service took him to Germany as well. Reynolds arrived at Fort Carson in August of 2014.

He leaves behind his wife, Tina, a Council Bluffs native, and their children Dominic, Nickolai and Cammy Jo. A visitation is planned from 1 to 8 p.m. on Sunday at Hoy-Kilnoski Funeral Home, with the family present from 5 to 8 p.m. Reynolds’ funeral is scheduled for 10 a.m. at the funeral home, with military rites and burial at Garner Township Cemetery.

A luncheon at Mabrey Park, 17th and Willow streets in Carter Lake, will follow the service.

Cards’ Garcia ruled out for Thursday, no DL move expected

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Jaime Garcia has been pushed back again and won’t start today (Thursday) for the St. Louis Cardinals because of what the pitcher calls a left groin strain. The left-hander and the team are confident he won’t be placed on the 15-day disabled list. Garcia could start early next week in Chicago against the Cubs.

Manager Mike Matheny said the replacement for the opener of a four-game series with the Padres will be a minor league call-up. Garcia was injured rounding third base scoring a run in the eighth inning of his last start on June 24 in Miami. The team had previously referred to the injury as a groin cramp.

Garcia is 3-3 with a 1.69 ERA in seven starts coming off thoracic outlet surgery to correct a nerve issue in his shoulder that cost him most of the previous two seasons.

Quintana paces White Sox to 7-1 win over Cardinals

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Melky Cabrera homered to back a strong outing from Jose Quintana, and the Chicago White Sox pulled away late to beat the St. Louis Cardinals 7-1 Wednesday night in a game interrupted by three rain delays.

The Cardinals lead the majors with a 51-26 record and had a six-game winning streak entering the two-game series but were held to a single run in each of the two losses to Chicago. They were 0 for 16 with runners in scoring position, including seven hitless at-bats Wednesday.

Quintana (4-7) allowed a run in six innings with eight strikeouts to win for the first time in four starts. The lefty worked at least six innings for the 10th straight time, none of the starts lasting longer than seven innings. Cabrera homered in the sixth to give the White Sox the lead. Tyler Flowers’ two-run homer highlighted a five-run ninth for the White Sox, who had dropped 12 of 16 entering the series.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The U.S. subsidiary of a Brazilian-based international meat processor is buying the pork division of Cargill Incorporated. JBS USA, a division of Sao Paulo, Brazil-based JBS, and Cargill said yesterday they have signed an agreement for the $1.45 billion transaction. JBS entered the U.S. pork market in 2007 and sells products under the Swift brand names.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A statewide firefighters union has censured the Des Moines fire chief, criticizing what it says is his anti-labor management style. The Register reports that the group took the action at its convention on Friday. The group president, Douglas Neys, says the censure has no actual effect on Chief John TeKippe other than subjecting him to public scrutiny for what the union says are his failings. TeKippe was president of Des Moines Local 4 before becoming chief in 2009.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Jurors have convicted a Pleasant Hill man of first-degree murder in the death of his ex-girlfriend’s fiance. The Des Moines Register reports the Polk County jury on Wednesday found 27-year-old David Moffitt guilty in the shooting death of 30-year-old Justin Michael. Moffitt killed Michael on May 8th, 2014, after breaking into his Grimes home.

CHARLES CITY, Iowa (AP) — A man suspected in a Chicago slaying has been arrested in northern Iowa. Charles City police say officers and federal agents arrested Phil Jones of Chicago without incident on Tuesday morning. Floyd County Jail records say he remained in custody on Wednesday.

DARREL GLEN DAVIS, 83, of Elliot and formally of Massena, died Tuesday, June 30th. Funeral Services for DARREL DAVIS will be held at 10:30-a.m. Friday, July, 3rd, 2015 at the Elliot United Methodist Church. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel of Red Oak is in charge of the arrangements.

Visitation with the family will be held from 6-to 8-p.m. Thursday, July 2nd, at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel in Red Oak.

Burial with full military honors will be in the Mission Covenant Cemetery in Stanton.

Memorials may be directed to the family.

Atlantic City Council approves Connector Trail/bridge bid

The Atlantic City Council, Wednesday, approved the Plans, Specifications and Form of Contract for the Connector Trail and Pedestrian Bridge Project. Their action followed a public hearing, during which there were no comments. The Council subsequently received word from Snyder and Associates Engineer Dave Sturm, that the bids had been opened for the project and reviewed.

Sturm said the low bid for the pedestrian bridge came from A.M. Cohron and Sons, of Atlantic, in the amount of $497, 049, which was $80,000 less than the engineer’s estimate of $599,730. Sturm said there were four bids altogether, and they were very close together.The project has been in the works since 2010. It’s expected to be completed by the end of November, weather permitting.

The City has agreed to contribute $50,000 from the Local Option Sales Tax (or, LOST) Progress Fund toward the project, which City Administrator John Lund said could serve as a potential launch pad for a number of economic development opportunities.

The Council also approved the Southeast Urban Renewal Plan Amendment, as it pertains to the Ash Street Housing Development project being proposed by Boose Building Construction. The estimated value created by the development, according to Lund, is Tax Increment Financing (TIF) amounting to slightly more than $1.02-million. Boose had requested TIF from the City to support the project.

The Council subsequently approved a Resolution authorizing an Internal Advance of Funds for the Urban Renewal Project, the TIF agreement for which amounts to $80,000. It will be repaid through revenue from the TIF district over the agreed upon terms outlined in the development agreement.

Atlantic Yard Waste Site now open 7 days per week

The City of Atlantic’s Yard Waste site is now open seven days per week, from 7:30-a.m. until dusk. That was the word from City Administrator John Lund during Wednesday evening’s regular meeting of the Council. The Yard Waste site had been previously been open only on Tuesday’s, Thursday’s, Saturday and Sunday, since March 21st.

A camera continues to monitor the site for any illegal dumping. Residents are reminded the site is only intended for trees, branches, grass, garden waste, and/or leaves.

Atlantic Chamber Alert: Bad checks

The Atlantic Police Department has reported a subject submitting bad checks as payment in the area. The Atlantic Area Chamber of Commerce says the checks are written on an account under the name of Kameo M. Smith. They include Gutherie County State Bank Bank Routing # 073921404, Bank Account # 6303395.
