AMES, Iowa (AP) – A consultant’s report says an array of problems at Iowa State University’s Thielen Student Health Center raises risks for students and the university. Des Moines television station KCCI says that the report by Keeling & Associates cites poor leadership and student access, inadequate medical training and licensing, understaffing, poor record-keeping and low morale. The report says those problems threaten the center’s accreditation and make “student health care at Iowa State a source of increasing concern and serious complaints.”

The Health Center contracted for the review after the former director moved out of her position last September. Martino Harmon, associate vice president of student affairs and interim director of the center, acknowledged that the consultant identified “a lot of challenges.” The report called for changes in 15 areas, including staffing.

Police in Red Oak arrested 55-year old Eric Eugene Thornton, Wednesday evening. Thornton (Whose address was not listed) was charged with Public Intoxication and held in the Montgomery County Jail on $300 bond.

Red Oak Police say female passenger in a vehicle involved in a collision Wednesday afternoon in Red Oak, was transported to the hospital following the crash, that took place at around 6:15-p.m. at 4th and E. Valley Streets. Authorities say 24-year old Breanna Hancock, of Chariton, was injured in the crash, and was transported by Red Oak EMS to the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital. Neither driver was injured.

Officials say a 2007 Pontiac G8 driven by 23-year old Christine McGlade, of Red Oak, was traveling east on E. Valley Street, and was struck by a northbound 2012 Kia Forte, driven by 17-year old Bayley Lampe, of Red Oak. McGlade admitted to authorities that she had failed to yield at the intersection.

In addition to Failure to Yield, McGlade was cited for Failure to provide proof of insurance. Damage from the collision amounted to $10,000.

A man and a teenager were hurt during a collision Wednesday night, east of Red Oak. The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office reports the accident happened at around 9:40-p.m. on 200th Street near the intersection with K Avenue, when 16-year old Owen Riley Vondielingen, of Red Oak, attempted to make a U-turn on K Avenue from eastbound 200th Street.

The teen told authorities he saw a small light behind him prior to making the turn, but though it was farther away than it actually was. While making the u-turn, the pickup Vondielingen was driving was struck in the driver’s side door by a 1982 Honda Goldwing, occupied by the driver, 44-year old Dustin Edward Swagel, and his passenger 17-year old, Gustin Glenn Swagel, both of Stanton.

The occupants of the cycle suffered non-life threatening injuries and were transported by Red Oak rescue to the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital. Damage from the crash amounted to $7,000. Deputies cited Vondielingen for Failure to obey a stop sign,

Red Oak Police and Red Oak Fire and Rescue assisted at the scene.

DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) — A 53-year-old Davenport man convicted of assault in the fight death of his brother-in-law has been sued by the man’s family. The Quad-City Times says the lawsuit was filed last month on behalf of the family of Douglas Whalen. Police say Van Hecke and Whalen got into an altercation during a vow renewal for Van Hecke and his wife, who is Whalen’s sister, at a park in Davenport in June 2013.

SABULA, Iowa (AP) — Iowa highway crews had to plow a bridge crossing the Mississippi River because of ankle-deep mayflies that swarmed the span. The Dubuque Telegraph Herald reports the insects on Saturday night swarmed to the Savannah-Sabula bridge, connecting Iowa and Illinois. The bugs covered the bridge so thickly, and caused such slick conditions, that crews plowed the bugs off the lanes and applied sand for traction.

NEWTON, Iowa (AP) — IndyCar rookie Sage Karam’s biggest step forward was overshadowed by altercations with veteran Ed Carpenter After the race Carpenter said that Karam “didn’t have a clue.” Karam maintains that he wouldn’t change a thing if he had to race the final 20 laps over again, and he finished third in Saturday’s race at Iowa.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Gov. Terry Branstad is authorizing the Iowa National Guard to increase security and arm additional personnel at facilities, including recruiting stations. Branstad said Wednesday he was authorizing Maj. Gen. Timothy Orr to strengthen security, but would leave the decisions to Orr’s discretion. Earlier this week, Branstad asked Orr to review the current security measures at National Guard sites.

The Republican governor also plans to ask the federal government to review the protections at all military facilities. He’ll make that request during a meeting this week in Washington for a group of governors who advise federal officials on security matters.
