Industry, Chinese officials sign giant soybean deal

Ag/Outdoor, News

September 25th, 2015 by admin

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Chinese officials agreed at a ceremony in Des Moines to buy 13.18 million metric tons of U.S. soybeans.

The officials signed 24 contracts Thursday that The Des Moines Register reports are valued at about $5.3 billion.

Ray Gaesser, an Iowa farmer and chairman of the American Soybean Association, says the amount China will import is roughly equal to all the soybeans grown in Iowa, expected to be the second-largest soybean producer this year behind Illinois.

China uses most of the soybeans it imports to feed livestock and poultry.

Don Roose, the president of U.S. Commodities, a commodities broker in West Des Moines, says the giant contract is good news for farmers, but he didn’t think it would change soybean prices.

McCarney returns to Iowa as North Texas faces Hawkeyes

Sports

September 25th, 2015 by admin

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – Kirk Ferentz and Dan McCarney spent nine years working together and eight years coaching on opposite sides of the bitter Iowa-Iowa State rivalry.

McCarney will return to Iowa on Saturday in a strange new role. He’ll be bringing with him North Texas (0-2), the team Ferentz and the Hawkeyes (3-0) plan on using as a tune-up for Big Ten play.

McCarney, who was born in Iowa City, played at Iowa and worked alongside Ferentz under legendary Hawkeyes coach Hayden Fry, will make his first appearance in Kinnick Stadium since 2006 – his last season in charge of the Cyclones.

It’ll be a bittersweet matchup for Ferentz, who first teamed up with McCarney under Fry in 1981.

Peralta, Piscotty power Cardinals over Brewers 7-3

Sports

ST. LOUIS (AP) – Jhonny Peralta and Stephen Piscotty hit back-to-back homers and combined for seven RBIs to power the St. Louis Cardinals to a 7-3 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on Thursday night.

St. Louis has a four-game lead over Pittsburgh for the NL Central lead.

The Cardinals trailed 3-0 in the fourth when Peralta hit a three-run homer into the center field bleachers, and Piscotty followed two pitches later with a blast into the left-center seats. The homer by Peralta, St. Louis’ cleanup hitter, was his first since Aug. 1.

Piscotty added a two-run, two-out single off Taylor Jungmann (9-7) in the fifth and a run-scoring single in the seventh to help the Cardinals win their fifth straight.

Michael Wacha (17-6) worked five innings and allowed three runs.

St. Louis, a major league-best 97-56, went 41 games over .500 for the first time.

Atlantic hosts Harlan in Class 3A District 8 play Friday

Sports

September 24th, 2015 by admin

The Atlantic Trojans (1-3, 0-2) return home to the Trojan Bowl Friday night to host the Harlan Cyclones (3-1, 0-1) in a Class 3A District 8 match-up. Atlantic will try to improve on a week 4 loss at ADM that was competitive early but snowballed into a 55-14 loss.  The injury bug has not been kind to Atlantic and Head Coach Eric Waldstein says young players are working hard to fill voids in the lineup.

Atlantic has already lost 2 players to season ending injuries with two other starters questionable for the game this week but Coach Waldstein says morale has stayed good on the team.

Harlan comes in after a tough loss to Dallas Center-Grimes in which a late punt return touchdown was the deciding factor.

You can listen to a lengthy interview with Coach Waldstein at 4:45pm Friday on Trojan Preview on KJAN. Kickoff at the Trojan Bowl is set for 7:00pm.

AHSTW hosts IKM-Manning for important district battle

Sports

September 24th, 2015 by admin

The AHSTW Vikings play host to the IKM-Manning Wolves on the gridiron Friday night at 7:00pm in Avoca.  Both teams come in with hopes of competing for the Class 1A District 1 crown and a win in this game would go a long way to helping that cause.

Both teams come into the game with just one loss on the season and that was to the Audubon Wheelers for both teams.  The Vikings fell in an opening week contest at Audubon 26-21, while the Wolves lost to the Wheelers at home in week two 31-13.

AHSTW Head Coach Davis Pattee feels like his team has improved since that week one game and values the tough competition that game brought.  The Vikings had eight different players score a touchdown in their week 4 win over OA-BCIG and coach Pattee hopes they can continue to use that balance against the toughness of IKM-Manning.

IKM-Manning Head Coach Tom Casey said it’s a challenge to simulate the Vikings offense during practice but he’s teaching his team to play assignment defense.  Casey has been pleased with the play of both his experienced players like Quarterback Kyle Wagner and also players stepping into new roles.

We’ll bring you coverage of the match-up here on KJAN tonight with Pregame at 6:30pm and Kickoff at 7:00pm.  Join Chris Parks and Seth Christensen for the broadcast on AM1220, FM101.1, online at kjan.com, on the KJAN mobile app, or watch the game on KJANTV online.  Our football night starts with our High School Pick ‘Em show Who’s Gonna Win? at 6:00pm.
