Pilot killed in plane crash headed Omaha investment firm

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) – An Omaha man killed in a plane crash on Interstate 29 in western Iowa this week headed an Omaha, Nebraska, investment advisory firm and brokerage and was a longtime Iowa State University supporter. The Omaha World-Herald reports John Warren Rogers was president and CEO of Westchester Capital Management in Omaha.

Authorities say the 65-year-old Rogers was flying the plane that crashed Thursday morning shortly after taking off from Eppley Airfield in Omaha. Rogers’ flight plan listed Trinidad, Colorado, and Chandler Arizona, as destinations.

Rogers graduated from the Iowa State University’s School of Architecture and studied finance with the Securities Industry Institute and the Wharton School of Business. He was a governor of the Iowa State University Foundation, a lifetime title that indicates he was a university supporter.

Vehicles & hunting prohibited on Wabash Trace Nature Trail

Officials with the Southwest Iowa Nature Trails Project, Inc. and Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation, remind the public that the Wabash Trace Nature Trail is a Wildlife Refuge, and that Hunting is strictly prohibited, as well as the use of any unauthorized motor vehicles. Trespassers will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. If you see any hunting, use of ATV’s, snowmobiles or other vehicles, and/or horses used in undesignated areas, make as many notes as possible and immediately contact the appropriate County Sheriff’s Department.

The 63-mile long rail-trail converted Wabash Trace Nature Trail runs from Council Bluffs through Blanchard, in southwest Iowa, and is accessible from the various towns through which is passes, including Mineola, Silver City, Malvern, Imogene, Shenandoah and Coin. Biking, hiking and cross-country skiing can all be enjoyed on the trail, where tunnels created by trees create a welcome sanctuary from the wind. The trail’s corridor provides a great habitat for deer, pheasants and other animals.

PATRICIA “PAT” MARGARET KENKEL, 71, of Panama, died Fri., Dec. 11th. A Mass of Christian Burial for “PAT” KENKEL will be held 10:30-a.m. Tue. Dec. 15th, at St. Mary’s of the Assumption Church in Panama. Pauley-Jones Funeral Home in Harlan has the arrangements.

Friends may call at the St. Mary’s Parish Center in Panama from 4-until 8-p.m. Monday, with a Rosart at 7-p.m.

Burial will be in the St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Her husband – Damian Kenkel, of Panama.

Her daughter – Kristene Schaben, of Harlan.

Her sons – Rodney (Angela) Kenkel, of Harlan, & Chad (Kelly) Kenkel, of Carroll.

Her sisters – Yvonne (David) Krueger, of Omaha; Edna (Ron) Odendahl, of Carroll; JoAnn (Larry) Mayes, of Renton, WA; Mary (Dan) D’Arcy, of Harlan; Peggy Thrasher (John Heithoff), and Jane (Eric) Rogers, all of Council Bluffs.

Herr brothers – Duane (Karen) Fahn, & Kenneth (Stacey) Fahn, all of Harlan; Keith (Debra) Fahn, of Carroll, and Randy (Cindy) Fahn, of Council Bluffs.

12 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

Judge deliberating whether Iowa man competent to stand trial

LE MARS, Iowa (AP) – A judge is not deliberating whether an Iowa man accused of killing his mother is mentally fit enough to stand trial. The Sioux City Journal reports that attorneys on Friday presented findings of separate mental health evaluations to District Judge Steven Andreasen in the case of 45-year-old Jonathan Neunaber. The judge took the findings under advisement and will issue a ruling at a later date.

Neunaber, of Akron, Iowa, has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder in death of his mother, 80-year-old Esther Neunaber. Her body was found last July with the body of her husband Donald Neunaber. She was beaten to death, and he had died of natural causes.

Nevada pulls away from Drake 79-71

RENO, Nev. (AP) — Marqueze Coleman scored 19 points and freshman Cameron Oliver matched his career-best with 17 points as Nevada broke away from Drake 79-71 on Saturday night. Coleman scored three unanswered baskets late in the game, putting the Wolf Pack (7-3) up by 14 points, 77-63 and forcing a Drake timeout. The Bulldogs missed their next four shots, including three 3-pointers.

Drake (4-6) closed on an 8-2 run over the final 1:50 but it wasn’t enough. Oliver scored all of his points in the second half. Tyron Criswell grabbed 12 rebounds and scored 10 points. D.J. Fenner added 13 points and Eric Cooper Jr. 11 as Nevada won its fourth game at home.

Reed Timmer scored 17 points, Kale Abrahamson 16 and Jacob Enevold Jensen 13 with 11 boards for Drake. The game was part of the Mountain West versus Missouri Valley Conference Challenge.

Bondurant man injured while deer hunting Sat. in Guthrie County

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says a Bondurant man was injured by a gunshot wound while deer hunting Saturday in Guthrie County. 32-year old Shaymus Smith, of Bondurant, was struck in the right leg by a shotgun slug fired from another member of his hunting party. The incident happened shortly after 2:30 p.m., approximately four miles north of Stuart. The slug missed Smith’s bone and arteries. The injury was not considered life threatening.

Smith was transported to Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines for treatment. Officials say it’s believed Smith was hit by a shot fired at a running deer. Smith was out of sight from other members of his party due to dense cover. The incident remains under investigatation by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.

Arrest made in connection with 2 bodies found in Union County

An official with the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation says a second body was found Saturday in Union County, during an investigation into the death of a woman whose body was found in a farm pond.  KCCI TV says according to DCI Special Agent Mike Motsinger, the remains of a person were found near a house in Thayer. The identity of the victim is unknown. The body has been taken to the state medical examiner where an autopsy will be performed.

Investigators had to use an excavator and a team of specially-trained dogs to recover the remains. 37-year old Jerry Dillinger was arrested and charged with two counts of first-degree murder Saturday, in connection to the deaths.  Iowa DCI agents and Union County deputies were at two homes Friday in Thayer as part of the investigation into the death of 37-year old Loretta Dillinger, who was found in a pond near Lorimor, on Monday.

THAYER – Authorities say a second body was found during an investigation into the death of a Thayer woman, Friday. Male suspect in both deaths arrested on two counts of 1st Degree murder.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — An Iowa Supreme Court ruling could curb the ability of state police agencies to seize cash and property from motorists. The Des Moines Register reports that Friday’s 5-2 decision from the Iowa Supreme Court will limit the ability of state patrol troopers and deputies to conduct warrantless vehicle searches.

DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) — The city of Davenport is considering at least one docking site other than one downtown supported by outgoing Mayor Bill Gluba for Viking River Cruises boats along the Mississippi River. The Quad-City Times reports that the city wanted a dock designed near the Centennial Bridge that connects downtown Davenport to Rock Island, Illinois. But Davenport landscape architect Zachary Peterson says cost and a possible environmental impact weighed into the city postponing the design phase in order to look elsewhere.

THAYER, Iowa (AP) — Iowa law enforcement officials have searched two homes in Thayer as part of the investigation into the death of a woman whose body was found in a pond earlier this week. Des Moines television station KCCI reports that Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation agents and Union County sheriff’s deputies searched the homes Friday.
