MEDIAPOLIS, Iowa (AP) — Authorities say 131 piglets and 10 sows were killed in a fire at a southeast Iowa hog confinement. The Hawk Eye in Burlington reports that the blaze at the Nelson Brothers Farm northeast of Mediapolis was caused by a shorted-out exhaust. Firefighters were called to the confinement around 2:45 p.m. Thursday and extinguished the blaze within minutes.

WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) — Iowa trucking industry officials say their business isn’t exactly smooth these days, but they don’t seem to be facing as many potholes. The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reports that lower fuel prices have served as both a bane and a boon for the trucking business. Waterloo native Bob Costello, chief economist at the Arlington, Virginia-based American Trucking Association, says the industry also faces a driver shortage.

WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) — Waterloo’s city council is considering a policy that would allow public reprimands for members who leak information discussed in confidential closed sessions. The Courier reports that Ward 3 Councilman Pat Morrissey is asking his colleagues to adopt the policy he developed to deal with elected officials who talk about the discussions that take place during legally closed executive sessions.

CORALVILLE, Iowa (AP) — An Iowa prison inmate has died in a hospice care unit. The Iowa Department of Corrections says 65-year-old Dennis Duane Richards died Friday at the Iowa Medical and Classification Center in Coralville. A prison spokesman says Richards died of natural causes related to throat cancer.

Clarinda Police Chief Keith Brothers is advising that the City of Clarinda will declare a snow emergency as soon as 2 inches of snow/ice accumulate at which time NO PARKING will be allowed on ANY PUBLIC STREET. The snow emergency will remain in effect until the snow/ice ceases and all public streets have been cleared and plowed from curb to curb.

A Polk County woman died during a rollover accident Saturday evening near Scranton. The Iowa State Patrol says 20-year old Sydney Thomas, of Des Moines, died when the vehicle Thomas was in rolled over multiple times. Thomas, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene.

The accident happened at around 6:50-p.m. Saturday on Highway 25, just north of 280th Street, in Greene County. The Patrol says a 2005 Chevy Malibu driven by 20-year old Ashley Andrews, of Scranton, was traveling south on Highway 25, when the vehicle went off the shoulder of the road. Thomas grabbed the steering wheel and tried to help Andrews correct the path of the vehicle, but her actions caused the car to over-correct, and go out of control, according to the report.

The car entered a ditch and rolled twice. Andrews, who was wearing her seat belt, suffered minor injuries and was transported by Scranton Fire and Rescue to the Greene County Medical Center.

The City of Griswold has declared a snow emergency as of 12:00 A.M. on Monday, December 28, 2015. Per the City of Griswold Code of Ordinances, 2010, Section 3-3-32, “No person shall park, abandon or leave unattended any vehicle on any public street or alley during a plowable snow unless the snow has been removed or plowed from said street or alley and the snow has ceased to fall. A snow emergency parking ban shall continue from its initiation through the duration of the snow or ice storm and the forty-eight (48) hour period after cessation of such, except as above provided upon streets and alleys which have been fully plowed.”

One person was injured during a two-vehicle collision Saturday afternoon, in Creston. Authorities in Union County say 19-year old Caitlyn Alexandra Ray, of Creston, was transported by ambulance to the Greater Regional Medical Center in Creston, after the SUV she was driving collided with a car at the intersection of East Summit and Palm Streets. The crash occurred at around 2:55-p.m.

Officials say a 2005 Chevy Malibu driven by 18-year old Kylie Jo Royster, of Earlham, was traveling south on Palm Street at the same time Ray was traveling west on Summit. The vehicles collided at the uncontrolled intersection when Ray failed to yield.

Ray, who was cited for Failure to Yield,  suffered possible, unknown injuries. Royster was not injured in the collision. Damage from the crash amounted t0 $8,000.
