Bohannon with 21 points, Northern Iowa routs Drake 77-44

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — Matt Bohannon made five 3-pointers, matched a season-high with 21 points, and Northern Iowa rolled to a 77-44 victory over Drake Saturday night. Bohannon shot 7 of 11 from the floor. Bennett Koch added 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting for Northern Iowa (10-7, 2-2 Missouri Valley Conference), which bounced back from a one-point loss to Missouri State on Jan. 6, and broke a two-game losing skid.

Reed Timmer scored 10 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead Drake (5-11, 0-4). The Bulldogs scored a season-low 44 points and have lost four-straight games and eight of their last nine. The Panthers had a double-digit lead midway through the first half, built a 41-20 halftime lead and never trailed.

Northern Iowa has won 14-straight conference home games dating to back to last season.

 

Powerball jackpot expected to grow to over $1.3 billion

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Lottery officials say no ticket has matched all six Powerball numbers. That means the record $949.8 million jackpot is expected to soar to $1.3 billion for Wednesday’s drawing. The odds to win were one in 292.2 million, and the numbers drawn were 32-16-19-57-34 and Powerball number 13.

Officials with the Multi-State Lottery Association, which runs the Powerball game, said they expected about 75 percent of the possible number combinations would have been bought for Saturday night’s drawing. Since November 4th, the Powerball jackpot has grown from its $40 million starting point as no one has won the jackpot.

Powerball is played in 44 states as well as the District of Columbia, U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.

Winterset man dies in fiery crash early Sunday morning

A collision in Madison County early this (Sunday) morning, claimed the life of a Winterset man. The Iowa State Patrol reports the driver of a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee, 48-year old John Timothy Eller, died during the crash that took place at around 4:15-a.m., in the 2100 block of west Summit Street, in Winterset.

The Patrol says a semi driven by 63-year old Gary James Hagey, of Clarinda, had just pulled out onto the road and was gaining speed, when Eller’s SUV came upon the rig and failed to slow down before hitting the semi in the rear. Following the collision, the SUV veered to the left and struck an in-ground electrical box and caught fire. Hagey, who was not injured, slowed his semi and pulled off onto the shoulder of the road.

The accident remains under investigation.

Shenandoah woman arrested Sun. morning on a drug charge

Sheriff’s deputies in Fremont County arrested a woman from Shenandoah, early this (Sunday) morning. 29-year old Katherine Elizabeth Lynn was taken into custody at around 1-a.m., and charged with Conspiracy to deliver a controlled substance/methamphetamine. The charge was the result of a long investigation into the illegal distribution of narcotics in Fremont County.

Lynn was being held in the Fremont County Law Enforcement Center on $50,000 bond.

Alcohol believed to have played a role in Fremont County crash

A Hamburg man was seriously injured during an accident Saturday in Fremont County. The Sheriff’s Office reports deputies were called to the scene of a single-vehicle, rollover accident just west of Riverton, on 250th St. Upon their arrival, they found 21-year old Dayne Andrew Sturm, trapped inside his vehicle, that was under water.

Sturm was unconscious and transported to Grape Community Hospital in Hamburg by Riverton Fire and Rescue. He was later transported to the University of Nebraska Medical Center, in Omaha.

An investigation into the crash continues, but authorities said alcohol was believed to have been a factor.

Chiefs await next opponent after 30-0 drubbing of Houston

The Chiefs are on to New England or Denver. Kansas City beat Houston 30-0 on the road for its 11th straight win to advance to the AFC divisional round. Andy Reid and the Chiefs now have to wait a few hours to find out their next opponent.

If the Bengals beat the Steelers in the night game, the Chiefs will play Denver for the third time this season. They beat the Broncos on the road 29-13 in Week 10. The Broncos won in Kansas City, 31-24, in Week Two. If the Steelers win, the Chiefs will visit the Patriots.

The Chiefs last played New England in 2014. They beat up on Tom Brady in a 41-14 victory. Kansas City overcame a 1-5 start and won the final 10 regular-season games.

 

Baylor upsets No. 13 Iowa State 94-89

AMES, Iowa (AP) – Johnathan Motley had a career-high 27 points and added 13 rebounds to help Baylor upset No. 13 Iowa State 94-89 on Saturday, handing the Cyclones their first home loss of the season. Taurean Prince had 18 points and 10 rebounds the Bears (12-3, 2-1 Big 12), which rallied from 11 down to beat the Cyclones on the road for the second year in a row.

Iowa State pulled to 80-76 before Prince hit a baseline jumper with 1:17 to go. Al Freeman’s free throws with 12 seconds to go clinched Baylor’s biggest win of the season. Georges Niang scored 22 points and Monte Morris had 21 for Iowa State (12-3, 1-2). The Cyclones have lost two of three after an 11-1 start.

MILDRED HERRON, 93, of Bayard, died Sat., Jan. 9th, in Guthrie Center. Funeral services for MILDRED HERRON will be held 10:30-a.m. Wed., Jan. 13th, at the Methodist Church in Bayard. Ohde Funeral Home in Bayard has the arrangements.

Friends may call after 4-p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Visitation will resume at the Methodist Church in Bayard beginning at 9:30-a.m.Wednesday (prior to the service).

Burial will be in the Orange Township Cemetery near Coon Rapids.

MILDRED HERRON is survived by:

Her children – Jerry Herron, and Dean Herron, both of Guthrie Center, and Judy Hoit, of Iowa City.

Her brothers – Bryan Betts, of Audubon, & Cleo Betts, of ElkHart, IN.

Her sister – Darlene George, of Coon Rapids.

6 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
