MARTHA BELLE AUERBACH, 91, of Atlantic, died Sat., Jan. 9th, at Atlantic Specialty Care. Funeral services for MARTHA BELLE AUERBACH will be held 10:30-a.m. Fri., Jan. 15th, at the Hockenberry Family Care Funeral Home, in Atlantic.

Burial will be in the Atlantic Cemetery.

MARTHA BELLE AUERBACH is survived by:

Her children – Tom Auerbach, of Atlantic; Cheri (Tom) Wood, and Jane (Randy) Thompson, all of Gilbert, AZ., and Pam (Dan) Gipple, of Shellknob, MO.

Her sister – Meroy Larson, of Atlantic.

Four Iowans come within one number of record Powerball jackpot

Four Iowans came within one number of winning the nearly 950 million dollar Powerball jackpot in Saturday’s drawing. One ticket purchased in Sioux City had the first five numbers but missed the Powerball number, giving the ticker holder a one million dollar prize. The others had the Powerball number, but missed one of the five other numbers. The estimate for Wednesday’s drawing is now one-point-three BILLION dollars, and you can could take an immediate 806 million cash payout if you won. Iowa Lottery spokesperson, Mary Neubauer, says the big jackpot has raised several new issues for the organization.

“There are signs that have two jackpots on them — one side is Powerball and the other side is Mega Millions — those signs are only designed for millions of dollars, we don’t have billion dollar capability on those signs,” according to Neubauer. Neubauer says those signs will display 999 million dollars as the estimated jackpot amount. “I guess that’s a nice complication to have,” according to Neubauer.

The big jackpot is also creating a problem with the message that is printed at the bottom of all lotto tickets in Iowa. That message is also only programmed to display amounts in the millions of dollars. Neubauer says the message will says the jackpot is 13-hundred (1,300) million dollars. “It’s funny the things that we are talking about today, because we’re definitely into uncharted territory here,” Neubauer says. Powerball fever has led to two new sales records for the Iowa Lottery.

Total lottery sales in Iowa for the week that ended Saturday were 19-nad-a-half million dollars. That is well above the lottery’s previous weekly sales record of 13-point-two million dollars set in February 2006. Powerball sales in Iowa for the week totaled 12-point-seven million dollars, which also is a record. The previous weekly record for Powerball sales in Iowa was nine-point-four million dollars in August 2001.

The winning numbers in Saturday’s Powerball jackpot drawing were: 16-19-32-34-57 and the Powerball number was 13.

Adair man arrested on drug and other charges

Adair County Sheriff Jeff Vandewater reports one person was arrested and two others were cited last week, for drug-related offenses. 23-year old Eric Lee Brown, of Adair, was arrested in Adair, after a deputy pulled him over because he knew Brown was barred from driving. When confronted, Brown denied having his license barred and allegedly identified himself as his brother. A records check verified the man was Eric Lee Brown, who was then placed under arrest for Driving While Barred, Providing False Identification, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, for allegedly having “Dabber,” (which is commonly used with oil extracts of marijuana). Brown was later released on $2,000 bond.

At the same location, but at different times during the day on Jan. 3rd, 39-year old Donathan Eugene Ebrecht, of Adair, and 21-year old Alexis Nicole Laslo, of Urbandale, both were cited by an Adair County Deputy, for Possession of drug paraphernalia. Ebrecht was also cited for Possession of a Controlled Substance/Marijuana-2nd offense. Ebrecht and Laslo were released upon receiving their citations.

Sheriff Vandewater says a Bridgewater man was cited Jan. 3rd for Driving Under Suspension. 52-year old Henry Lewis DeGraw was released upon receiving the citation.

And, two people were arrested at midnight, Saturday, by Adair Police. 43-year old Brian Dean Plowman, of Adair, was arrested for Simple Assault and Disorderly Conduct. 34-year old Ryan James Richter, of Casey, was arrested for Public Intoxication and Disorderly Conduct. Both men were later released on $300 bond, each.

The Sheriff’s Office reports also, 43-year old Paul Allen Scheel, of Creston, turned himself-in Saturday morning to serve time for a court-ordered sentence. Scheel remained in the Jail late Sunday night while serving the balance of his sentence.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The Iowa Legislature is expected to tackle K through 12 education and water quality initiatives in the session that convenes Monday. The Democratic-controlled Senate and the Republican-led House have long been at odds over how much money to spend on education, and the 2016 session will likely continue that pattern.

DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) — Davenport officials are considering eliminating a dozen jobs to cut $900,000 from next year’s city budget. The Quad-City Times reports the proposed cuts could include three police jobs and three jobs at the fire department. Interim Police Chief Paul Sikorski told city officials Saturday it would hurt to lose a juvenile court liaison officer and two other positions.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — There are three weeks to go before Iowa kicks off the 2016 presidential campaign, and Donald Trump and Ted Cruz are generating overwhelming enthusiasm among Republican voters in the state. Talk of a “takedown” effort by the party establishment aimed at either Trump or Cruz appears to have faded as the February 1st caucuses in Iowa near.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Shatori Walker-Kimbrough scored 19 points, Brionna Jones had 15 points and 11 rebounds and Number 8 Maryland rolled past Iowa in a 76-56 win Sunday. Iowa — the best free throw shooting team in the Big Ten — made only 12 of 21 from the foul line.

Walker-Kimbrough leads No. 8 Maryland to win over Iowa

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Shatori Walker-Kimbrough scored 19 points, Brionna Jones had 15 points and 11 rebounds and No. 8 Maryland rolled past Iowa in a 76-56 win on Sunday. Kristen Confroy added 11 points and the Terrapins forced 16 turnovers to snap Iowa’s 25-game home winning streak in Maryland coach Brenda Frese’s return to her home state.

The Terrapins (14-2, 3-1 Big Ten) has won two straight since falling to No. 5 Ohio State on Jan. 2. Ally Disterhoft and Megan Gustafson each scored 14 points for the Hawkeye (12-4, 2-2).

Maryland led wire-to-wire, but used a 14-4 run in the third quarter to pull away from Iowa. Jones scored seven of her 15 points during that key stretch. Iowa — the best free throw shooting team in the Big Ten — made only 12 of 21 from the foul line.

Atlantic Wrestlers finish strong to take Rollin Dyer Invitational

The Atlantic/CAM wrestling team finished strong in the final round to secure the team championship in the Rollin Dyer Invitational they hosted on Saturday. The Trojans won all 7 of their championship matches to seal the victory.  Champs included Kole Hansen (106), Carter Cox (113), Chase McLaren (120), Drake Roller (182), Zac Stork (195), Keagan Hosfelt (220) and John McConkey (285).  The full team standings and weight class finishes can be seen below.
