No. 4 Baylor women win 14th in a row, 78-41 over Iowa State

Sports

February 20th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

WACO, Texas (AP) – Niya Johnson had 13 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists as No. 4 Baylor overwhelmed Iowa State 78-41 on Saturday for its 14th consecutive victory.
Alexis Jones had 18 points for the Big 12-leading Lady Bears (27-1, 14-1 Big 12). Freshman post player Kalani Brown added 16 points on 7-of-8 shooting along with seven rebounds.

Iowa State (13-13, 5-10) shot only 23 percent from the field (14 of 65) and was outrebounded 64-25. The Lady Bears had five players with at least seven rebounds.
Seanna Johnson led the Cyclones with 12 points, and Meredith Burkhall had 10.

Johnson just missed becoming only the second player in Baylor history with a triple-double while playing 26 minutes. The only other Lady Bear to pull off that feat was former All-America post Brittney Griner (five times). Baylor leading scorer Nina Davis was 2-of-9 shooting for six points, 10 under her average.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid has knee replacement surgery

Sports

February 20th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid has had knee replacement surgery and will not attend the NFL’s scouting combine in Indianapolis next week. The Chiefs confirmed to The Associated Press on Saturday that Reid had the procedure. Reid also had knee replacement surgery last year that caused him to miss the Senior Bowl.

The 58-year-old coach’s absence from Indianapolis should not have much of an effect on the Chiefs’ draft plans. While he offers general manager John Dorsey considerable input into the decision-making, he no longer has final say in personnel like he had in Philadelphia.  This three-day draft begins April 28 in Chicago.

Nebraska woman charged with theft of thousands in Iowa

News

February 20th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) — A Waterloo, Nebraska woman has been charged in Iowa with stealing between $22,000 and $222,000. The Daily Nonpareil reports that 44-year-old Beth Beutler was arrested Friday morning in western Iowa and charged with 38 counts of forgery. Authorities say she also faces charges of theft and ongoing criminal activity.

Police say Beutler used a checking machine to withdraw thousands of dollars. The machine allows truck drivers to access funds from across the country by giving a clerk at a truck stop an authorization code to pay for fuel, service or get cash.

Police say Beutler got the authorization codes from McMullen Brothers Trucking in Carter Lake, where her husband works, and used them at Pilot Travel Center in Council Bluffs.

Bluffs Police respond to possible “Shot fired” call

News

February 20th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

Police in Council Bluffs responded late Saturday morning to a report of an armed subject inside a residence at 3400 3rd Avenue. While they were en route just before 10-a.m., officers were told a caller reported they thought a shot had been fired inside the home.

As officers were establishing a perimeter of the area the residents were exiting the house and quickly taken to safety. The occupants advised officers the armed subject was still inside the residence. Officers then made entry and cleared the house. No one was located inside the residence and no evidence of an intruder or shots fired were discovered.Bluffs Badge

None of the neighbors were able to confirm that any shots were fired or any suspicious subjects were observed around the residence. There are no injuries associated with the call for service, and the residence was turned back over to the homeowners. The neighborhood returned to normal activities.
