IA women beat Illinois Saturday, 61-56

The University of Iowa women’s basketball team will enter the Big Ten Tournament with three wins in its last four games after downing Illinois, 61-56, in the regular season finale Saturday in front of 4,610 on Mediacom Court. HawkeyeSports.com reports Hawkeye freshman Megan Gustafson made the closing statement in a battle of the league’s elite post players when she sank a turn-around jump shot over Chatrice White to give Iowa a 59-56 lead with 48 seconds remaining. Both players finished with double-doubles in points and rebounds.

Iowa (18-12 overall, 8-10 Big Ten) finished the regular season 11-4 inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena and have won 18-or-more games in nine consecutive seasons. Illinois falls to 9-20, 2-16.

Four Hawkeyes scored in double figures, led by Gustafson. Whitney Jennings, who made back-to-back 3-pointers to begin a 16-0 run at the end of the third quarter, scored 14, Ally Disterhoft had 13, and Chase Coley added 10. Iowa assisted on 20-of-24 made field goals; Alexa Kastanek had a career-high and game-high seven assists and Tania Davis added six.

The Hawkeyes return to action Thursday at the Big Ten Tournament in Indianapolis. As the No. 8 or No. 9 seed, Iowa will play either Michigan or Nebraska and tip off at 11 a.m. (CT) from Bankers Life Fieldhouse. The winner takes on top-seeded Maryland on March 4 at 11 a.m.

No. 17 Iowa State beats Kansas State 80-61

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Matt Thomas scored 20 points and Georges Niang added 17 to help 17th-ranked Iowa State beat Kansas State 80-61 on Saturday night, clinching its fifth straight 20-win season. Jameel McKay scored 14 points with 17 rebounds off the bench for the notoriously-thin Cyclones (20-9, 9-7 Big 12), who got 24 points from their reserves.

Iowa State strung together 13-0 runs in each half, which proved to be the difference. The Wildcats pulled as close as 65-59 before backup Hallice Cooke’s 3 with just under four minutes left swung momentum back in favor of the Cyclones. D.J. Johnson had 22 with nine boards for Kansas State (15-14, 4-12), which shot just 4 of 18 from 3-point range.

Utah truckers injured during I-80 accident in Cass County

A semi driver and his passenger were injured during an accident late Saturday night on Interstate 80, in Cass County. The Iowa State Patrol reports 69-year old Bruce Dale White, of Ogden, Utah, was driving a Freightliner double-bottom Fed-Ex semi eastbound on I-80 at around 10:55-p.m., when for reasons unknown, he lost control near the Olive Street Exit to Atlantic (Exit 57).

The semi  entered the median and ended-up in the north ditch. White, and his passenger, 57-year old J. Max Robinson, of Palin City, Utah, were injured. Both men were transported by LifeNet helicopter to the University of Nebraska Medical Center, in Omaha.

Soon after the semi crossed through the median, a pickup driven by 20-year old Jakob Quibell, of Dansville, Kentucky, struck debris from the median. LARRY BARBER, 73, of Anita (Svcs. 3/3/16)

Obituaries

LARRY BARBER, 73, of Anita, died Sat., Feb. 27th, at home. Memorial services for LARRY BARBER will be held 5-p.m. Thu., March 3rd, at the Hockenberry Family Care Funeral Home, in Anita.

Visitation with his family is from 5:30-until 7:30-p.m. Thursday, at the funeral home.

A luncheon will be held from 6-until 8-p.m. Thursday at the Anita Legion Hall.

Memorials may be directed to the family.

LARRY BARBER is survived by:

His sons – Bradley (Terri) Barber, and Daniel (Terri) Barber, all of Anita.

His daughters – Debbie (Francis) Hollinrake, of Adair; BobbiJo (Tom) Curtis, of Webster City, and Pamela (Zach Fetter) Bissell, of Omaha.

His sisters – Lola (Walter) Peterson, of Adair, and Norma (Glenn) Hemphill, of Griswold.

16 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.

Suspect in fatal crash fails to show for court hearing

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) – A man suspected of being drunk and drag racing when he caused a fatal crash has skipped court. A judge revoked 19-year-old Eswin Mejia’s $50,000 bail on Friday when Mejia failed to show for his preliminary hearing. Officials weren’t surprised, as Mejia earlier this month skipped urine tests required for him remain free on $5,000 bond. Police have not been able to find Mejia – a Honduras national believed to have been in the country illegally.

Police say Mejia’s blood-alcohol content more than three times the legal limit when he crashed on Jan. 29 into an SUV, killing its driver, 21-year-old Sarah Root, of Council Bluffs.  Criticism has been levied at legal officials for allowing Mejia’s $5,000 bond to go unchallenged, as well as federal immigration officials for not seeking to hold Mejia.

Adair & Guthrie Storm Spotter Class March 16th followed by Severe Weather Awareness Week

The Adair and Guthrie County Emergency Management Agencies will host a joint 2016 Storm Spotter Class at the Menlo Community Center, beginning at 7:00 PM on March 16th. Robert Kempf, Coordinator for the agencies, says the class is free and open to the public.

The following week, March 21st-throught the 25th, is Severe Weather Awareness Week in Iowa. The highlight of Severe Weather Awareness Week is the annual statewide tornado drill scheduled for 10-a.m. Wednesday, March 23rd.  Schools, businesses, state and local governments, and individuals are strongly encouraged to participate in the drill. Additional information about the tornado drill can be found on local National Weather Service (NWS) website.

During Severe Weather Awareness Week, the Iowa Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management will post information on individual and family preparedness at www.BeReady.iowa.gov, including podcasts, public service announcements and videos. The NWS will promote severe weather safety on their websites and by issuing informative public information statements.

Williams has 32 as No. 23 Oklahoma women roll Iowa St. 85-54

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) – Kaylon Williams made 13 of 14 shots and scored a career-high 32 points in her last home game to lead No. 23 Oklahoma to an 85-54 win over Iowa State on Saturday. The Sooners (19-9, 10-7 Big 12) hit 9 of 15 shots in the first quarter in opening a 25-13 lead. They were up by nine at the half and used a 28-12 third quarter to decide the issue. Oklahoma shot 60 percent (33 of 55) from the field and held Iowa State to 33 percent (17 of 52).

Emily Durr led the Cyclones (13-15, 5-12), who have lost 11 of 13, with a career-high 24 points. Jadda Buckley added 16. Behind Williams and Peyton Little, who had 11 points and seven rebounds, Oklahoma had a 37-26 rebounding advantage and outscored the Cyclones 42-20 in the paint. Gioya Carter had six assists as the Sooners had 21 helpers on 33 baskets.
