CAM School Board sets budget hearing date & time

News

March 22nd, 2016 by Ric Hanson

The CAM Community School District’s Board of Education, Monday, evening, set April 12th at 6:30-p.m., as the date and time for a public hearing on the 2016-17 district budget and school calendar. Superintendent Casey Berlau told KJAN News the budget, if approved, will result in a tax rate of $10.84 per thousand dollars taxable property valuation.  He says the budget presented to the Board Monday night is based on the district receiving 4% State Supplemental Aid [SSA], which, Berlau says he doubts will happen.

The budget reflects an increase of 67-cents to the maximum of $1.34 per thousand dollars allowed by a physical plant and equipment levy (PPEL) that was approved by voters in the CAM District, last month. Berlau said the other part of the increase is due to the fact the District hasn’t been levying much in terms of cash reserve. Their cash balances are not in trouble, according to Berlau, but the trend has been down, so they did levy some in cash reserves that they hadn’t done in the past.

The budget will be published in the local paper within the next week. In other business, the CAM School Board approved the hiring of Snyder and Associates Engineers in Atlantic, for the District’s summer capitol projects, which have been prioritized to includes a roof project in Massena, a parking lot project at the Anita High School, fixing the bus driveway at Massena, as well as exterior wall work. Snyder’s will assist the District in obtaining sealed bids for the projects, because they exceed the $25,000 thresh-hold policy for purchasing and bidding the district has in-place.

Chiefs star LB Houston had knee surgery in February

Sports

March 22nd, 2016 by admin

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Kansas City Chiefs star pass rusher Justin Houston could miss much or all of next season after having surgery to repair an ACL in his knee.

The Chiefs said Tuesday that the ligament was not fully torn, but after a meeting with orthopedist Dr. James Andrews, the consensus was surgery was the best option for his long-term health.

The best-case scenario is a mid-August return, though it’s possible Houston could miss the entire season. The Chiefs didn’t specify which knee.

Houston hurt a knee last season, but at the time it was diagnosed a hyper-extension. He played with a brace in a playoff win over Houston and the Chiefs’ season-ending playoff loss to New England.

(Update) 14-year old from Neola dies in Monday evening crash

News

March 22nd, 2016 by Ric Hanson

The Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s Office has identified the victims of a fatal rollover accident that took place Monday evening, near Neola. Authorities say 14-year old Gage Williams, of Neola, died from his injuries at Mercy CHI Hospital. The driver of the vehicle, 18-year old Kael Karagianis, of Neola, and a passenger, 16-year old Jordan Macias, also Neola, both suffered non-incapacitating injuries, and were also transported to Mercy CHI. 16-year old Kaden Karagianis, (the brother of Kael), was transported to Jennie Edmundson in Council Bluffs for treatment of incapacitating injuries.

An investigation determined that at around 5:40-p.m. a 1998 Ford F‐150 pickup that had been south bound on Rail Road Highway, went out of control. The driver over-corrected, causing the vehicle to cross the centerline of the road and strike a field entrance in a ditch. The pickup rolled at least one time coming to rest on its top, in a farm field.  All of the victims were transported to the hospitals by Neola Fire and Rescue. Authorities have said the teens had just left track practice at Tri-Center High School when the accident occurred

The investigation into the cause of the accident is ongoing. No citations have been issued at this time. Crisis response and grief counselors are being made available for students of the Tri-Center School District, today, as they process the death of a classmate and the injury of three others.

Monday’s crash was eerily reminiscent of a similar accident that took place a little more than six-years ago a few miles north of the Tri-Center/Neola High School campus. During the March 17th, 2010 crash, 14-year old Katie Dyer, of Honey Creek, died. That accident, which involved a car that rolled over numerous times, also resulted in injuries to the driver, 15-year old Samantha Reid, who was from Honey Creek, and her 16-year old passengers Cari Wilson and Chelsea Birtwell, both of whom at the time, were from Persia. In that crash, two of the girls, including Dyer, were wearing seat belts, the other two were not. All four were ejected from the vehicle. Reid was driving with a school license, which allowed students who are 14 ½ years of age or older, to drive to-and-from school.

Frozen Fruit Salad (3-22-2016)

Mom's Tips

March 22nd, 2016 by Jim Field

  • 1 can cherry pie filling
  • 20 oz. can crushed pineapple (drain well)
  • 1/4 cup lemon juice
  • 8 oz. container whipped topping
  • 1/2 cup crushed pecans

Mix well and put in cup cake liners – freeze.  Take out a few minutes before serving – this will soften fast.  Can also be placed on graham cracker crust and made into a simple pie.

(I did not put pecans in mixture as some don’t like nuts, so placed a half on top.  Also, added a couple of bananas.

Statewide Tornado Drill in IA set for March 24th

Weather

March 22nd, 2016 by Ric Hanson

Severe thunderstorms and tornadoes are one of Iowa’s most common hazards. That’s why it is important to prepare for these types of emergencies. Do you know what to do when severe weather affects your workplace? How do you know when it is time to seek shelter and where to go? Who gives you the all clear to return to your work area?

These are the types of questions and procedures you can check with the Annual Tornado Drill scheduled for Thursday, March 24, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. The drill is held in conjunction with the National Weather Service’s Severe Weather Awareness Week. It’s a great opportunity for employees, students and guests, to review their weather procedures. This drill is statewide and all persons in Iowa are encouraged to participate.

The drill will proceed as follows:

10:00 am: Tornado Watch (drill) given over NOAA Weather Radio. NO SHELTERING REQUIRED.

10:20 am: Tornado Warning (drill) given over NOAA Weather Radio. EVERYONE WILL PROCEED TO DESIGNATED SHELTERS IMMEDIATELY.

10:30 am: All Clear (drill) given over NOAA Weather Radio. EVERYONE RETURN TO WORK STATIONS.

Severe Weather terminology:

Watch: A National Weather Service product indicating that a particular hazard is possible, i.e., that conditions are more favorable than usual for its occurrence. A watch is a recommendation for planning, preparation, and increased awareness (i.e., to be alert for changing weather, listen for further information, and think about what to do if the danger materializes).*

Warning: A product issued by National Weather Service local offices indicating that a particular weather hazard is either imminent or has been reported. A warning indicates the need to take action to protect life and property. The type of hazard is reflected in the type of warning (i.e., tornado warning, blizzard warning, etc.).*

Please make sure you know where your shelter location is prior to this drill. If you are not sure about the workplace or schools procedures you should follow in times of Weather Watches and Warnings, talk to your supervisor. Officials ask you to not take the drill for granted. Use the thirty minutes of this exercise to make sure you know where to go, and the steps to take, when severe weather strikes.
