Former Audubon Wrestler Kerkhoff receives multiple awards at BVU

The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced its end-of-the-year major award winners on Wednesday morning, and current Buena Vista and former Audubon wrestler Brad Kerkhoff has been tabbed the IIAC Freshman of the Year.

This marks the second straight season that a Beaver wrestler has captured the award.  Nashid Barrow took home the honors in 2014-15.

Kerkhoff, who wrestled at 149 pounds for BVU this season, posted a team-best 20-14 record overall and went 2-2 in league matches.  He finished sixth place at the NCAA Regional Tournament and was runner-up at the Luther College Open early in the year.  He also excelled off the mat and was tabbed a Scholar All-American by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) following the season. Kerkhoff was also named BVU Freshman of the Year.

2 more candidates file for District 4 Cass Co. Supervisor seat

Cass County Auditor Dale Sunderman reports two more candidates have filed nomination papers to run for County Office in advance of today’s (Wednesday’s) 5-p.m. deadline for the June 7th Primary election in Cass County.

Republicans Rocky Anderson and Ryan Askeland, both of Griswold, will compete on June 7th for the District 4 Cass County Board of Supervisor’s seat against fellow Republicans Steve Baier and Barry Moore, of Griswold, Todd Hansen, of Atlantic, and Nick Hensley, of Cumberland. Chuck Rieken had earlier announced he would not be running for re-election in District 4.

As of mid-day today, there were still three Republican candidates running for Duane McFadden’s seat on the Cass County Board of Supervisors in District 1: Steve Green, Dave Jones and Dale Retallic, all of Atlantic hope to get the most votes in June.

There’s no change in the District 5 Cass County Supervisor’s race, where Republicans J. Ford Lillard, of Wiota, and Bernard Pettinger, of Anita, hope to unseat incumbent Republican Frank Waters, of Cumberland.

And, there are no new contenders thus far for Cass County Auditor, where incumbent Dale Sunderman, of Atlantic, faces a challenge from Wendy Richter, who is also from Atlantic. Both are running on the Republican ticket.

Cass County Republican Sheriff Darby McLaren was unopposed for his position, as of mid-day, Wednesday. There are NO Democrats running for any of the open positions in Cass County.

Justices struggle with key issues in Iowa voting rights case

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Iowa Supreme Court justices are struggling with legal questions in a case that asks them to restore voting rights for thousands of felons. During oral arguments Wednesday, justices seemed divided and puzzled over how to interpret an 1857 provision in the Iowa Constitution that disenfranchises those convicted of “infamous crimes.”

At stake is voting rights for 57,000 felons who’ve been disqualified from participating in Iowa elections or holding public office. The American Civil Liberties Union, NAACP and the elections commissioner of Iowa’s largest county asked the court to define infamous crimes as only those that are particularly serious and an “affront to democratic governance.” That definition would restore voting rights to most felons and potentially some inmates. But an attorney for the state argued all felonies should be considered infamous.

Military Night at Iowa Barnstormers game, May 27th

The Iowa Department of Veterans Affairs has announced the Iowa Barnstormers will be hosting a Military Night, including free tickets for ALL active military, veterans, and their families, on Friday, May 27th at Wells Fargo Arena. The Arena Football League Barnstormers will be taking on the Sioux Falls Storm, beginning at 7:05-p.m. at “The Well.”

Local veterans organizations will also be on hand to provide information and services for our members of the military. index

Shenandoah man arrested for drug paraphernalia in Mills County

A traffic stop late Tuesday night in Mills County resulted in one person being arrested on a drug charge. Mills County Sheriff’s Officials say 23-year old Joshua William Bell, of Shenandoah, was taken into custody on Highway 34 at around 11:30-p.m., on a Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, charge. His bond was set at $300.

And, at around 11:15-p.m., Tuesday, Mills County deputies arrested 39-year old Tangee Nicole Bennage, of Shenandoah,  on a Page County warrant for Theft in the 5th degree. Bond was set at $300.

(Update 10-a.m.) Atlantic woman arrested after early morning chase

(In an update to our earlier reports) – A chase that began early this (Wednesday) morning in rural Cass County resulted in the arrest of a woman on drug and other charges. The Cass County Sheriff’s Office says 28-year old Denise Jean Chamberlin, of Atlantic, faces a felony Eluding charge, along with an aggravated misdemeanor charge of OWI/2nd offense, and a serious misdemeanor charge of Driving While Revoked. She was also cited for numerous moving violations, including: speeding; Reckless driving; and, four counts of Failure to Obey a Stop Sign.

Chamberlin was arrested after a nearly 15 minute pursuit that began a little after 1-a.m.  Deputy Ben Bartholomew noticed a 2002 Mitsubishi took an abrupt turn onto a gravel road when he passed by the vehicle while on routine patrol. When Bartholomew turned around near 710th and Galveston Road and tried to question the driver, the SUV sped-off.

The chase wound its way across gravel, dirt and paved roads before coming to an end when Bartholomew performed a PIT maneuver just west of the intersection of White Pole Road and 690th Street, at around 1:20-a.m. The move caused the SUV to spin into the south ditch off White Pole Road.

Glenwood dominates Hawkeye 10 South Track Meet

The Glenwood Track and Field teams dominated on home turf to win both the boys and girls Hawkeye 10 South Meet.

Boys Team Standings

  2. Shenandoah 79pts
  3. Clarinda 64.5pts
  4. Creston 37.5pts
  5. Red Oak 21pts

Glenwood got wins from Josh Lee in the 100m, Caleb Petersen in the 400m, Andrew Blum in the 800m, Carter Von Essen in the 400m Hurdles, Kyle Murtfeld in the Long Jump, Nate Sherrano in the Shot Put, and Cody Sorenson in the Discus.

Atlantic woman arrested on a Cass Co. warrant associated w/prescription drug violation

The Cass County Sheriff’s Office reports an Atlantic woman was arrested Monday, on a Cass County Sheriff’s Office warrant for Prescription Drug Violation (a Serious misdemeanor). 24-year old Thea Marie Sherman was taken to the Cass County Jail and released Tuesday on her own recognizance.
