Comments on the tournament from Atlantic Boys Golf Coach Ed DenBeste: “Going into this meet, I knew they boys were pretty tired.  We had traveled around the state for several meets and I was hoping that we weren’t too tired.  Great to see our team get the win today with a good score of 323 in the wind.  Denison is a good course but very tough with a strong wind.  When you have 5 of your 6 golfers in the top 10, you know you have played a good solid round.  Zac played great.  He had some struggles earlier in the week but this was a great round for him.  Jake had played well all day and just had two bad holes at the end.  The par 3s on the back are difficult.  Ben and Kyle played solid today.  This was Matt Gearheart’s first round here so it was great to see him shoot a good score of 83.  Nate had a nice round as well especially after being sick yesterday.  I know he will get that score down.  Great win for our team!!!!!”

Man believed to provide false information in accident at Creston Fareway

News

April 23rd, 2016 by admin

The Creston Police Department is investigating an accident in which one party possibly provided false information.  The accident was reported on Thursday, April 21st at 12:45pm at the Creston Fareway parking lot.  A blue truck was backing up out of a parking space and struck the rear drivers side of a 2001 Buick LeSabre that was traveling northbound in the parking lot.  The owner of the Buick exchanged information at the scene but officers later had reason to believe the driver of the truck provided false information.  The truck driver claimed to be Ray Brunner of Orient and said he had an insurance policy with State Farm.  Officers were unable to locate an individual by that name and State Farm had no record of a policy under that name.  The phone number given was no longer in service.  Damage to the Buick was estimated at $1,400.  The incident is still under investigation.

To end overtime session, lawmakers must navigate roadblocks

News

April 23rd, 2016 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — There isn’t a deadline for the Iowa Legislature to adjourn, but there clearly are some issues that are keeping lawmakers from finishing their work. Lawmakers try to be done by the annual date when payments for their expenses end. This year payments ended on April 19, so lawmakers are several days late with plenty of work ahead of them in the coming week.

Although legislators have reached deals on some issues, such as K-12 education funding and tax rules, there’s disagreement over Medicaid oversight, transportation, infrastructure funding and whether to block state spending on the family planning organization Planned Parenthood.

At least some bills that will make up the nearly $7.35 billion budget are expected to be sorted out in special legislative committees.

Iowa’s defense looks strong heading into 2016

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa had hoped that the return of star defensive end Drew Ott would fill out its defense. The Hawkeyes should be stout on that side of the ball anyway.

Iowa suffered its first major loss in 2016 when the NCAA denied Ott’s appeal for an extra year of eligibility because of a medical hardship. But the Hawkeyes should still have one of the best defenses in the Big Ten next fall, with seven starters back from a unit that allowed just 19 points a game last season.

Iowa, which went 12-2 and 8-0 in conference play last season, concluded spring practice with a scrimmage Saturday at Kinnick Stadium in which its defense outpaced its offense.

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) — Police have charged a 40-year-old Council Bluffs man with kidnapping and sexually abusing a teenage girl. The Daily Nonpareil reports that 40-year old Fednol Garly St. Cyr was charged Friday with first-degree kidnapping, third-degree sexual abuse and indecent contact with a child. St. Cyr could face life in prison if convicted of the kidnapping charge.

Police Sgt. Chad Meyers says the girl told police she complied when St. Cyr told her to get into his truck on April 5th, but he later refused to let her get out. Police say St. Cyr drove to the back of a mall and sexually assaulted the girl.

St. Cyr remains in the Pottawattamie County Jail on $500,000 bond. His preliminary hearing is set for May 2nd.
