Former ISU basketball standout fatally shot in TX

DALLAS (AP) — New Orleans Pelicans guard Bryce Dejean-Jones was fatally shot after breaking down the door to a Dallas apartment, authorities said Saturday. A man living at the apartment was sleeping when he heard his front door kicked open, Dallas Police Senior Cpl. DeMarquis Black said in a statement. When Dejean-Jones began kicking at the bedroom door, the man retrieved a handgun and fired. Officers who responded found Dejean-Jones collapsed in an outdoor passageway, and he later died at a hospital. He was 23.

In 2014, Dejean-Jones transferred to Iowa State to play under coach Fred Hoiberg. He played in 33 games during the 2014–15 season, starting 21, averaging 10.5 points, 4.7 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.1 steals, while shooting a career-best 47.6 percent from the field. In Dejean-Jones’ only NBA season, which ended in February because of a broken right wrist, the 6-foot-6 guard started 11 of 14 games and averaged 5.6 points and 3.4 rebounds.

It is legal in Texas for someone to use deadly force in order to protect themselves from intruders. Julie Keel, a spokeswoman for Camden Property Trust, the real estate company that owns the apartment complex in Dallas, confirmed that the complex’s apartment manager had sent out an email to residents saying that the person who had been shot had been trying to break into “the apartment of an estranged acquaintance” and that this person had “inadvertently” broken into the wrong apartment.

Black said he could not confirm that Dejean-Jones was trying to access an acquaintance’s apartment.

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) — New court documents show that Sioux City Community School District has paid $40,000 to settle a lawsuit brought by the mother of a student sexually exploited by former educational specialist. The school board earlier this month approved a $20,000 settlement agreement. The Sioux City Journal reports that documents filed Thursday show the district’s insurance carrier will pay another $20,000. The insurance portion was not earlier disclosed by the district.

WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) — Three candidates seeking the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate spent no time Saturday at a Waterloo debate attacking each other. Instead, they focused criticism on Republican incumbent Sen. Chuck Grassley and GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump. The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reports that state Sen. Rob Hogg and former legislators Tom Fiegen and Bob Krause fielded questions about how to address concerns of the Black Lives Matter movement, campaign finance and criminal justice matters.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — An Ames-based company is peddling a mobile food dehydrator in an effort to stop food waste around the globe. Cedar Rapids television station KGAN reports that the KinoSol is a mobile food dehydration unit that is solar powered for farmers. KinoSol co-founder Clayton Mooney says one-third of all food produced goes to waste and that the dehydrator is crucial in developing countries.

Dawson goes deep in 10th to lead Buckeyes past Spartans 3-2

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Ronnie Dawson homered leading off the top of the 10th inning Saturday night to send Ohio State to a 3-2 win over Michigan State that keeps the Buckeyes alive in the Big Ten tournament. The Buckeyes (41-18-1) and Spartans (36-19) will meet again this (Sunday) morning, with the winner advancing to the championship game against bottom seed Iowa.

Michigan State had a runner on second base with one out in the bottom of the ninth, but Marty Bechina got caught in a rundown on Kory Young’s grounder, and Young was thrown out trying to go from first to second on the play. Dawson sent Walter Borkovich’s second pitch of the 10th into the right-field seats for his 13th homer of the season, pumping his fist as he rounded first.

Seth Kinker (6-1) pitched two innings of scoreless relief before turning the game over to closer Yianni Pavlopoulos, who earned his 14th save. Borkovich (4-3) took the loss.

Wainwright uses arm, bat to lift Cardinals past Nats 9-4

WASHINGTON (AP) — Adam Wainwright pitched seven gritty innings and made an ample contribution at the plate, hitting a two-run double to help the St. Louis Cardinals defeat the Washington Nationals 9-4 Saturday night. Matt Holliday homered for the Cardinals, who took control with a four-run second inning highlighted by Wainwright’s fifth extra-base hit of the season.

With two on, two outs and a run in, Wainwright lined the first pitch from Gio Gonzalez (3-3) into the left-center gap. Matt Carpenter, activated from the paternity list before the game, followed with an RBI double for a 4-0 lead. That started Wainwright (5-3) on a path to his fifth straight win. The right-hander allowed four runs and six hits — including a career-record tying three home runs. He struck out five and walked none.

Ryan Zimmerman went 4 for 4 with two homers, and Bryce Harper hit a solo shot for the Nationals.

School district paid $40,00 to settle student sex lawsuit

Superintendent Paul Gausman says the district’s share of the settlement will be paid from a taxpayer-funded budget section used to pay insurance premiums and legal settlements. Police say 30-year-old Erick Deleon had a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old student. He was sentenced to three years’ probation and a suspended five-year sentence.

Cardinals activate Matt Carpenter from paternity list

WASHINGTON (AP) — Third baseman Matt Carpenter has been activated from the paternity list by the St. Louis Cardinals. Carpenter missed two games after being placed on the paternity list Thursday. His wife gave birth to the couple’s first child, a girl, on Wednesday. Carpenter leads the Cardinals with nine home runs and 32 RBIs.

To make room for Carpenter on the 25-man roster, St. Louis designated infielder Ruben Tejada for assignment on Saturday. Tejada was batting .176 over 23 games with no homers and three RBIs.
