SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) — The Sioux City Council is mulling a bevy of proposals that would amount to about $60 million in upgrades to the Tyson Events Center. The Sioux City Journal reports that the upgrades are aimed at helping the Sioux City venue better compete with event centers in Omaha and Lincoln in Nebraska and Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

A consultant on Friday unveiled the proposed upgrades to the City Council. They include adding everything from smartphone charging stations to a 15,000 square foot atrium at the main entrance. Smaller suggested additions included a walk-in convenience store for visitors to buy prepackaged food.

Big-ticket add-ons included expansion of the building’s concourses and a 15,000 square foot lobby entry that could house more restrooms, merchandise stands and concessions.

Women to drop lawsuit on hair braiding in Iowa amid new law

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Two women challenging Iowa’s regulation on African-style hair braiding plan to drop a lawsuit they filed last year because of a change in state law. An attorney for Aicheria Bell and Achan Agit says the lawsuit against the state’s cosmetology board will be dismissed once new legislation takes effect Friday. The pending law will allow the women and others in Iowa to do natural hair braiding without a cosmetology license, which requires 2,100 hours of training that is mostly unrelated to braiding.

Iowa becomes among roughly 20 states that exclude natural hair braiding from the type of regulation that critics say can be burdensome to people in African-American and African immigrant communities. The move highlights some occupational licensing requirements around the country that research shows can hold back workers.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Tyler Chadwick homered and doubled, Alex Cunningham pitched 6 1/3 solid innings, and surprising Coastal Carolina reached the College World Series finals with a 7-5 victory over TCU on Saturday night. The Chanticleers (53-17) of the Big South Conference will play Arizona in a best-of-three series starting Monday, trying to win the national championship in their first appearance at the CWS.

Chadwick’s blast over the right-center wall opened the scoring, and the Chanticleers added two runs in the third and four in the fourth. They had only three baserunners over the last four innings, and TCU pulled within two runs with one out in the ninth. But Michael Landestoy hit into his third double play of the game to end it.

Alex Cunningham (10-4) scattered eight hits and allowed four runs before turning the game over to Bobby Holmes. Jared Janczak (7-4), the first of four TCU pitchers, last three innings and took the loss for the Horned Frogs (49-18).
