The percentage of Iowans who are obese has increased, according to an annual report released Thursday. Iowa now has the 12th highest adult obesity rate in the nation at 32.1 percent. That’s up from 30.9 percent last year, when Iowa was 16th in the rankings compiled by the Trust for America’s Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The report shows adult obesity rates are above 30 percent in 25 states and are above 20 percent in all states. Louisiana has the highest adult obesity rate at 36.2 percent and Colorado has the lowest at 20.2 percent.

Callahan solid again as Packers fall to Chiefs, 17-7

Sports

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Rookie quarterback Joe Callahan capped a strong preseason by throwing for 143 yards and a touchdown as the Green Bay Packers lost to the Kansas City Chiefs 17-7 in their preseason finale Thursday night. Callahan played almost the entire way in a game featuring second- and third-teamers on both sides. The product of Division III Wesley College has been trying to earn the No. 3 job behind Aaron Rodgers and Brett Hundley, who has been sidelined by an ankle injury this preseason.

The only first-stringers to see much of the field were specialists on both teams. They needed some practice, too. After the Chiefs’ third straight three-and-out in the first quarter, Dustin Colquitt’s punt was blocked by Green Bay wide receiver Ty Montgomery. The Packers only needed two plays for Callahan to hit tight end Jared Cook for the game’s opening touchdown.

The game also featured the debut of Green Bay punter Jacob Schum, who was claimed off waivers from Tampa Bay this week. Schum replaced veteran punter Tim Masthay in a surprising roster move. Kansas City running back Knile Davis, who could be traded by the weekend, ran 15 times for 58 yards and a touchdown. The former third-round draft pick also caught a pass out of the backfield. Darrin Reaves also had 63 yards rushing and a touchdown for Kansas City.

Here is the latest Iowa news from The Associated Press at 3:20 a.m. CDT

WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) — An angry white officer repeatedly yanked on the dreadlocks of a handcuffed black man who was arrested after a dangerous high-speed chase in Iowa, then twice hit him on the back of the head. Video obtained by The Associated Press shows the officer briefly assaulting 24-year-old Montavis Keller and calling him names after the April 19 chase. A prosecutor has concluded that no charges are warranted against officer Adam Wittmayer, who was disciplined by his department.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — A Cedar Rapids man has pleaded guilty to one count of enticement of minors in connection with improper contact with three girls. The U.S. Attorney’s Office says 20-year-old Tyler Konigsmark, a former school bus attendant, pleaded guilty Thursday to the enticement charge and acknowledged that he used Snapchat and his mobile phone to request sexually explicit images of the girls, ages 12, 13 and 14. Konigsmark also admitted he twice had sex with the 12-year-old girl. He will be sentenced later.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — A Missouri judge has fined the state Highway Patrol $5,000 after finding that it violated open records law in responding to requests from the family of an Iowa man who drowned while in custody. According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the judge ruled Wednesday that the state’s delays in turning over documents to Brandon Ellingson’s family amounted to a “purposeful violation.” Ellingson drowned in 2014 on the Lake of the Ozarks.

BLUE GRASS, Iowa (AP) — A construction work was killed when the driver of a speeding vehicle apparently lost control in a work zone near the southeast Iowa city of Blue Grass. The Scott County Sheriff’s Office says a deputy saw the speeding vehicle but before he could catch up to it the vehicle entered a work zone. The driver tried to exit the highway but careened into the construction area and hit a worker. The worker was pronounced dead upon arrival at a hospital. The driver and a child in the vehicle were injured.

Atlantic Football eyes 2-0 start at Shenandoah

Sports

September 1st, 2016 by admin

The Atlantic Trojan Football team travels to Shenandoah Friday night to take on the Mustangs with an eye on a 2-0 start to the season. The welcomed new Head Coach Mike McDermott with a thrilling 16-14 home win in week one over Clarinda. The winning margin thanks to a field goal with under a minute to play in the game.Coach McDermott said it was nice to get that opening win and was proud of the way the Trojans played, especially their attention to the details.

The Shenandoah Mustangs suffered an overtime loss to AHSTW 13-6 in week one and their Head Coach Brian Diekmann said his team is hungry for a win.

Shenandoah beat the Trojans at home last year 55-19 behind star Quarterback Jake Johnson who racked up 181 rushing yards, 96 passing yards, and accounted for 3 touchdowns in the win.  Coach Diekmann knows Johnson was a big player to replace but likes what he has seen from Jordan Miller so far.

The Trojans will be looking to slow down the Shenandoah ground game and Coach McDermott knows their option attack presents a challenge for his defense.

Coach McDermott thinks the Trojan offense will improve as the season moves along but doesn’t need them to rack up big numbers if they play sound football.  He says the task this week will be getting in front of the Mustang linebackers.

Coach McDermott is excited to see how is team reacts to their first road trip of the year.

We’ll have coverage of the Trojans and the Mustangs Friday night here on KJAN.  Tune in to hear more from Coach McDermott on Trojan Preview at 4:45pm. Then catch our pick ’em show Who’s Gonna Win? at 6:00pm, followed by the Dvorak Tire and Service Pre-Game Show at 6:30pm, and Kickoff in Shenandoah is at 7:00pm. Chris Parks and Mike Smith will bring you all the coverage on the air: AM 1220, FM 101.1 and online: KJAN mobile app, audio at kjan.com, and watch the video on KJAN TV.
