Cass County Supervisors to act on Bible reading marathon request

News

September 2nd, 2016 by Ric Hanson

The Cass County Board of Supervisors are expected to act during their meeting next Wednesday morning (Sept. 7th), on granting permission for a Bible Reading Marathon to take place on the courthouse block grounds, Sept. 19th through the 25th. The action to be taken during their meeting that begins at 8:30-a.m., is with regard to a proclamation made by Governor Terry Branstad on April 26th, that encouraged all Iowans to participate in the historic 99 county marathon, from  June 30th through July 3rd. Branstad also encouraged “Individuals and families in Iowa to read through the Bible on a daily basis each year until the Lord comes.”

The American Civil Liberties Union and the Freedom from Religion Foundation raised constitutional concerns over the proclamation, arguing the government should be “neutral” toward religion. The “First Liberty Institute” has said it will defend Branstad if he is sued over the matter.

In other business, the Board of Supervisors will act on a resolution abating the taxes on parcels of land owned by the City of Atlantic, per Iowa Code.

One of the vehicles sustained extensive front end damage, while the other had a broken tailpipe mount that caused the tailpipe and muffler to drag on the ground. Chiefs send CB Marcus Cooper to Cardinals for draft pick

Sports

September 2nd, 2016 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs sent cornerback Marcus Cooper to the Arizona Cardinals for an undisclosed draft pick on Friday as they began the process of trimming their roster. The Cardinals have been trying to find a cornerback to start across from Patrick Peterson.

Brandon Williams and Cariel Brooks struggled in their preseason finale against the Broncos on Thursday night. Mike Jenkins was lost to a torn ACL during camp and veteran cornerback Justin Bethel has been dealing with a lingering foot problem.

Cooper made six starts and had three interceptions in 2013, playing well enough to be the Chiefs’ rookie of the year. But he lost his starting job the following season and was unlikely to have kept his spot on the roster when it was trimmed to 53 players Saturday.

Statue of Hayden Fry unveiled today in Coralville

Sports

September 2nd, 2016 by Ric Hanson

Former Iowa football coach Hayden Fry was on hand for the “big reveal” in
Coralville today (Friday).  “I didn’t ever know that I looked that good,” Fry joked. A statue of Fry as he looked standing along the sidelines in Kinnick Stadium was unveiled today (Friday). “It’s a fantastic statue,” Fry said, laughing. “Slim and trim, in good shape because of the football and the Marine Corps.”

The 1979 season was Fry’s first at the University of Iowa. He told Hawkeye fans that if you stayed with the game long enough, “the worm is bound to turn” — and Fry guided the program to national prominence. He spent nearly 20 years at the school. His statue will be placed on First Avenue in Coralville, in front of the Visitors and Convention Bureau for Iowa City and Coralville.

“A great tribute to my coaching staff through the years, the players, the fans,” Fry said today. University of Iowa president Bruce Harreld was on hand for today’s (Friday’s) ceremony. “Just watching him gaze at that statue that’s going to be in our community memorializing all he’s done,” Harreld said. “He, in many ways, brought back winning and the winning attitude to the University of Iowa and all the citizens of the state.”

Harreld and Fry made their comments in video posted on the twitter account for The Iowa Hawkeyes. Fry, who is 87, was inducted in the College Football Hall of Fame in 2003. Fry coached at S-M-U and North Texas State before he was hired to guide the Hawkeye program. His lifetime coaching record was 232 wins, 178 losses and 10 ties.
