Northern Iowa rallies to beat Iowa State 25-20

Sports

September 4th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Aaron Bailey threw for 135 yards, ran for 114 more and had two touchdowns as Northern Iowa rallied to beat Iowa State 25-20 Saturday and spoil coach Matt Campbell’s debut with the Cyclones. UNI’s J’Veyon Browning scored from 1 yard out with 2:49 left after a Joel Lanning interception, putting the Panthers ahead by five.

Cyclones running back Mike Warren fumbled it right back to Northern Iowa, and Lanning’s final pick with 1:10 left sealed what could hardly be considered an upset for Northern Iowa. Lanning finished with 256 yards passing, three touchdowns and those two costly interceptions. The Panthers scored touchdowns after an Iowa State safety, fumble and interception in beating the Cyclones for the second time since 2013.

Up next, the Cyclones will travel to Iowa City to face rival Iowa, ranked 17th. The Hawkeyes had some issues defensively, but their offense averaged eight yards a play as they rolled 45-21 over Miami (Ohio) on Saturday. Iowa State has beaten Iowa more than once after looking sluggish in its opener, but it’ll likely be a big underdog against the defending Big Ten West champion. The Panthers move on to host Montana, ranked No. 13 in the FCS, in a key non-conference showdown in Cedar Falls.

A traffic stop Saturday in Fremont County resulted in a 25-mile long pursuit that ended with the arrest of a man and woman from Nebraska. The Fremont County Sheriff’s Office reports a Fremont County K9 unit attempted to stop a sedan driven by Jerry Coleman, of Omaha, near the Iowa/Missouri border on Interstate 29.

Coleman proceeded to elude the deputy at speeds of over 100 miles per hour. Troopers with the Iowa State Patrol and Deputies with the Mills County Sheriff’s Office joined in the chase. Authorities were able to lay down “stop sticks” near the Bartlett exit of I-29 (mile-marker 24), and disable the vehicle. Coleman, and his passenger, Tiffany Roddy, also of Omaha, were placed under arrest.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Akrum Wadley ran for 121 yards and two touchdowns, LeShun Daniels added 83 yards rushing and two scores, and No. 17 Iowa beats Miami (Ohio) 45-21 on Saturday. C.J. Beathard was 13 of 20 passing for 192 yards and a touchdown for the Hawkeyes (1-0), whose sloppy defensive play in the second half let Miami hang around.

Daniels and Wadley each scored twice in the first half, and Jerminic Smith’s 12-yard TD reception put the Hawkeyes ahead 35-7 early in the third quarter. The RedHawks (0-1) had touchdown drives of 75 and 74 yards with the game seemingly in hand. But Derrick Mitchell Jr.’s touchdown run with 3:08 left put Iowa ahead by 24. Billy Bahl threw for 266 yards and two TDs for Miami, which outgained Iowa 424-404.

The Hawkeyes get their first Power Five test of the season when rival Iowa State visits Kinnick Stadium next Saturday. The Cyclones have a new coach, Matt Campbell, and an offensive line decimated by injuries and departures. But Iowa State usually plays Iowa tough. The Hawkeyes needed two late TDs to beat the Cyclones 31-17 last year in Ames.

New trial set for ex-coach previously convicted of sex abuse

News

September 3rd, 2016 by Ric Hanson

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) — A new trial has been set for a former western Iowa youth softball coach previously found guilty of sex abuse. The Daily Nonpareil reports  49-year-old John Osborn again faces trial on Nov. 15 on counts accusing him of sexually abusing a 14-year-old girl.

Osborn was convicted of four counts in the spring of 2015 and faced up to 40 years in prison. But the judge ordered a new trial when new evidence surfaced before Osborn could be sentenced. The new trial has been delayed as prosecutors appealed. On Tuesday, the Iowa Court of Appeals upheld the judge’s order granting a new trial.

Council Bluffs police say Osborn and the girl engaged in sex acts when the girl stayed at Osborn’s house for a sleepover with his daughter.

Midwest earthquake – update 11-a.m. 9/3/16

News

September 3rd, 2016 by Ric Hanson

A Pawnee, OK., business owner says the 5.6 magnitude earthquake shook his house “like a rubber band” and knocked items off cabinets and broke glass. Furniture store owner Lee Wills told The Associated Press he was awake when the quake struck at 7:02 a.m. Saturday and first thought it was a thunderstorm. But then his home, which is about 2½ miles outside of town, started shaking. Wills said buildings in the downtown area are cracked and sandstone facing on some buildings fell and described the scene as “a mess.” The quake was felt as far away as Nebraska and Iowa.

The Pawnee County emergency management director says no injuries have been reported and no buildings have collapsed following a magnitude 5.6 earthquake that ties a 2011 temblor for the strongest in Oklahoma history. Mark Randell said the Saturday morning quake did cause cracks and damages to city buildings, some of which date to the early 1900s.

The U.S. Geological Survey reports the quake struck at 7:02 a.m. about nine miles northwest of Pawnee, a town of about 2,200 about 70 miles northwest of Oklahoma City. The U.S.G.S. also reports a 3.6 magnitude aftershock in the same area at 7:58 a.m.

FRESH RASPBERRY BUTTERMILK CAKE—adapted from chocolatechocolateandmore.com

Ingredients:

  • 4 ounces (1 stick) unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 1-1/2 c. all-purpose flour
  • 1-1/4 t. baking powder
  • ½ t. salt
  • 1 c. plus 3 T. granulated sugar, divided
  • 1 t. vanilla extract
  • ½ t. raspberry emulsion (optional)
  • 2 large eggs
  • ¾ c. buttermilk (Make your own by putting a shy teaspoonful of vinegar into a glass measuring cup and adding enough milk to make ¾ c. sour milk/buttermilk.)
  • 1-1/2 c. fresh raspberries OR 1 c. fresh raspberries and ½ c. pomegranate infused frozen cranberries, thawed
  • Coarse white sugar crystals for sprinkling on top of cake (optional)

Method:

Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Prepare 8” x 8” round cake pan by putting a parchment circle in the bottom of pan. Spray sides of pan and parchment circle with baking nonstick spray with flour. Set aside.

In medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt.

Place butter in a large mixing bowl. Turn mixer on low, gradually add 1 c. sugar. Cream on medium-high speed until pale and fluffy, stopping to scrape down sides with a silicone spatula, 3-4 minutes.

Add vanilla and raspberry emulsion.

Add eggs one at a time, fully incorporating the first egg before adding the next.

At low speed, add flour mixture in 3 batches, alternating with buttermilk, beginning and ending with four, and mixing until just combined. Spoon batter into cake pan, smoothing top.

In a small bowl, gently toss raspberries and cranberries with remaining 3 T. sugar. Evenly distribute berries over top of cake, pushing some down into batter. Sprinkle sugar crystals over the top.

Bake until cake is golden and tester inserted into center comes out clean, about 30-35 minutes.

Cool cake in pan for 10-15 minutes and turn out to wire rack. Remove parchment paper from bottom of cake. Turn cake over to cool further. Just before serving, sprinkle top with powdered sugar.

Yields: About 8 servings.
