Police in Council Bluffs say officers responded to a residence in the 100 block of S. 7th Street early this (Sunday) morning, for a reported home invasion. Officers were notified at around 12:15-a.m. a resident of the home discovered a man in her apartment. The suspect fled from the scene, carrying numerous items. Police checked the area but were unable to locate the suspect.

The Latest: Oklahoma governor declares emergency after quake

PAWNEE, Okla. (AP) – Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin has declared a state of emergency in Pawnee County after a magnitude 5.6 earthquake struck northwest of Pawnee.
The earthquake struck at 7:02 a.m. Saturday and was felt throughout the Midwestern United States, including here in Atlantic. No severe damage or serious injuries were reported. The quake ties a 2011 earthquake for the strongest earthquake in recorded state history.

Fallin’s order allows state agencies to make emergency purchases for disaster relief and is the first step toward asking for federal assistance, if necessary. Fallin said in a statement that information is still being gathered and will be reviewed by her coordinating council on seismic activity.

The state of emergency lasts for 30 days and additional counties may be added.

Red Oak woman arrested (again)

Police in Red Oak, Saturday evening, arrested a woman who has a long history of arrests. 46-year old Shelby JoAnn Olivares, of Red Oak, was taken into custody at around 8:30-p.m., on a charge of Domestic Abuse/Simple Assault. She was arrested in the 200 block of 2nd Street, in Red Oak, and brought to the Montgomery County Jail, where Olivares was being held without bond.

Missouri man arrested on drug charges near Villisca; Stanton man arrested for Probation Violation

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office reports a traffic stop early this (Sunday) morning just north of Villisca, resulted in a drug-related arrest. 27-year old Zachary Allan Colebank, of Hopkins, MO., was pulled over at around 1:05-a.m. and subsequently charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance/Marijuana. Colebank was being held in the Montgomery County Jail on $1,000 bond. The Montgomery County K9 Unit assisted in conducting the arrest.

And, at around 12:30-p.m. Saturday, Montgomery County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 41-year old Justin Woods, of Stanton, on a valid Montgomery County warrant for Probation Violation. Woods was being held in the Montgomery County Jail on a $5,000 cash bond.

2 die in separate eastern IA crashes, Saturday

Two people, a man and a woman, died in separate accidents Saturday, in eastern Iowa. The Iowa State Patrol reports just after 10-p.m., 22-year old Johnathon Cooper, of Sperry, died in Des Moines County, when the 2006 Yamaha motorcycle he was riding southbound crossed the centerline in the 1200 block of Madison Avenue, and was struck by a northbound 2003 Chevy Trailblazer, driven by 50-year old Raeburn Schuyler, of Dearborn, MI. Cooper died at the scene. The accident remained under investigation.

And, at around 12:30-a.m. Saturday, 22-year old Elizabeth Lenton, of Kalona died, when the ATV she was a passenger on, went out of control for reasons unknown, and rolled over. Lenton, and the driver of the machine, 28-year old Alex Merritt, of Iowa City, were ejected during the accident. Merritt was transported to the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City, by Washington County Ambulance. The crash remains under investigation, and charges are pending.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Tommy Armstrong Junior ran for two touchdowns and threw a perfect deep ball to Alonzo Moore for another, and Nebraska pulled away in the second half to defeat Fresno State 43-10 Saturday night. The Cornhuskers pounded away at the Bulldogs with runs on 51 of their 64 plays, and Devine Ozigbo ran for a career-high 103 yards and two touchdowns in Lincoln.

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) Fifth-ranked LSU suffered its first opening day loss in 12 years under coach Les Miles as Rafael Gaglianone drilled a 47-yard field goal with 3:47 left in Wisconsin’s 16-14 triumph over the Tigers. Corey Clement ran for 86 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries for the Badgers, whose defense blanked the Tigers deep into the third quarter. LSU tailback and Heisman Trophy hopeful Leonard Fournette ran for 138 yards on 23 carries but limped off on his final carry, a 15-yard run with less than two minutes left.

In Pacific Coast League baseball, Saturday, the Iowa Cubs downed Colorado Springs 5-t0 1, while Omaha fell to Oklahoma City by a score of 3-to 0.

In Major League Baseball: Eric Hosmer hit his career-high 20th homer, Yordano Ventura pitched into and out of trouble, and the Kansas City Royals snapped a three-game losing streak with a 5-2 victory over the Detroit Tigers Saturday night. Ventura improved to 7-0 against the Tigers, including three wins this season.

Reds pull away, send sloppy Cardinals to 3rd straight loss

CINCINNATI (AP) — Zack Cozart hit a pair of doubles during run-scoring innings that included St. Louis misplays, and the Cincinnati Reds sent the Cardinals to their third straight loss, 9-1 Saturday. The Cardinals have lost seven of 11. They’re still in position to get the NL’s second wild-card spot, staying ahead of the Mets, Pirates and Marlins.

Pinch hitter Ramon Cabrera’s two-run single in the seventh inning put the Reds ahead 4-1. Cincinnati used four walks by Jerome Williams to score five times in the eighth, capped by Tucker Barnhart’s bases-loaded double.

Dan Straily (11-7) gave up three hits, including Jedd Gyorko’s homer, and a career-high seven walks in only 5 2/3 innings. Gyorko hit his career-high 25th home run, 18 since the All-Star break. Jaime Garcia (10-11) lost after allowing two runs in six innings.

Kelley with 3 TDs as Div. II Quincy upsets Drake 38-35

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Robbie Kelley threw for two touchdowns and ran for another as Division II Quincy upset Drake 38-35 in a season opener for both teams on Saturday. Kelley threw for 293 yards for the Hawks. Jaylan James ran for 178 yards and two scores. Eric Poindexter had seven receptions for 165 yards and grabbed both of Kelley’s scoring passes.

Drake went up 7-0 early on a Conley Wilkins run but the Hawks replied with a Nathan Kewney 35-yard field goal with 6:33 left in the first quarter and then took advantage of a Cody Thibault interception to take the lead on a 28-yard scoring pass from Kelley to Poindexter. Kelley hit Poindexter again for a 67-yard touchdown early in the second quarter and the Hawks went on to a 28-21 halftime lead. They never trailed again.

Thibault threw for 170 yards and two touchdowns for the Bulldogs but was intercepted twice.
