Chiefs owner Hunt open-minded about Raiders relocation

Sports

November 7th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs owner Clark Hunt says he has an open mind about the Raiders moving to Las Vegas. Hunt spoke to a handful of reporters before Kansas City played Jacksonville on Sunday, and told The Associated Press “that probably five years ago I would have been skeptical that it could happen.”

Hunt said the league is doing research on the move, including what kind of fan support the Raiders would have in Las Vegas. And while he wants to reserve judgment until that report is delivered, Hunt did say that he expects Oakland to ask permission to move and the league to address it in the coming months.

The Raiders would need 24 of 32 owners to approve relocation.

Here is the latest Iowa news from The Associated Press at 3:40 a.m. CST

ROCKWELL CITY, Iowa (AP) — Some Iowa landowners are raising concerns about the way workers are building an oil pipeline across their land, but backers of the $3.8 billion Dakota Access pipeline say the complaints don’t represent major problems with the project. The Des Moines Register reports some landowners along the pipeline route have filed complaints with local or state officials about things such as debris left behind after construction or cattle being released.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa Republicans say they’ll have the pieces in place on Election Day to take control again of the Legislature. That is a long-standing goal that would enable them to alter Iowa’s legislative priorities next year and move unhindered on a conservative agenda. State GOP leaders are pointing to their party’s voter registration numbers in key district races as a sign of possible success on Tuesday to flip the state Senate. The party has been trying to take back the Senate for several years.

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) — Briar Cliff University is dropping its plan to buy part of a Sioux City park for practice fields after some neighbors opposed the idea. University officials say it is putting its plan to use the park on hold because of the neighborhood concerns.

DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) — Officials say that since a new recycling program began in August in Davenport and Bettendorf, the amount of recyclables collected has increased more than 70 percent from the same three-month period last year. The Quad-City Times reports that officials are crediting a switch to the “Go All In” program that allows more types of plastic and paper containers to be recycled. Also, the system no longer requires sorting of recycled materials _ it all goes in one cart.

Cubs decline Hammel’s 2017 option

Sports

CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Cubs have declined Jason Hammel’s option for the 2017 season, making the pitcher a free agent. The World Series champions announced the move on Sunday. The option was worth $12 million, and Hammel gets a $2 million buyout. The 34-year-old Hammel went 15-10 with a 3.83 ERA in 30 starts this year. The 6-foot-6 right-hander is 33-22 with a 3.59 ERA in 78 starts over two stints with the Cubs.

Hammel did not pitch in the playoffs. The Cubs got Mike Montgomery in a July trade with Seattle, and he likely will replace Hammel in the rotation. Hammel first signed with the Cubs in February 2014. He went 8-5 with a 2.98 ERA in 17 starts before he was traded to Oakland in the deal that sent shortstop Addison Russell to Chicago.

He re-signed with Chicago for a $20 million, two-year contract in December 2014.

Chiefs shut down Bortles, Jaguars to escape with 19-14 win

Sports

November 6th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Kansas City Chiefs stuffed the offensively inept Jacksonville Jaguars on fourth down with less than 2 minutes left deep in their own territory on Sunday, preserving a 19-14 victory despite finishing without five offensive starters. Nick Foles threw for 187 yards and a first-half touchdown toss to Albert Wilson, and helped to set up four field goals by Cairo Santos, as Kansas City (6-2) won its 10th consecutive home game.

Meanwhile, the Jaguars (2-6) couldn’t overcome four turnovers – including a fumble at the goal line in the fourth quarter – in their first game with quarterback coach Nathaniel Hackett directing the offense .

Blake Bortles threw for 252 yards and two touchdowns with a pick, showing little improvement after a week spent with his personal coach, Adam Dedeaux . His wide receivers hardly helped him, dropping several passes, including an early fourth-down throw that cost Jacksonville a chance at points.

Chiefs running back Knile Davis played after re-signing with Kansas City on Saturday. Davis was traded to Green Bay three weeks ago, cut after two games and signed with the New York Jets. He was cut again hours later, allowing him to return to Kansas City.

UP NEXT: The Chiefs expect to have Alex Smith back when they visit Carolina.
