Here is the latest Iowa news from The Associated Press at 2:40 a.m. CST

MUSCATINE, Iowa (AP) — The landscape around the Muscatine County Courthouse will change when nine large ash trees are removed because of damage caused by the emerald ash borer. The Muscatine Journal reports county officials decided to remove the trees after they were inspected by an expert because they could be a safety hazard. Damage caused by the emerald ash borer beetles kills the trees and leaves the limbs brittle.

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) — Council Bluffs officials are trying to determine how far invasive zebra mussels have spread from one of the basins where the city draws drinking water from. The Daily Nonpareil reports the mussels were found during maintenance this fall, but it’s not clear if they have begun to colonize and clog the pipes leading into the city’s water treatment plant.

ASBURY, Iowa (AP) — The firing of Asbury’s parks director is being questioned by board members who oversaw his work. Parks board member Ken Resch tells The Dubuque Telegraph Herald that the firing of Jason Thieme last Wednesday was a surprise.

PHOENIX (AP) — Former Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer fought her Republican party in the Legislature for months to push through an expansion of Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act. Now, she hopes one of the pillars of President Barack Obama’s health care law can be saved as Donald Trump pushes to dump much of the overhaul. Many officials in GOP-led states that expanded Medicaid are like Brewer. They support the program that brought insurance to about 9 million low-income Americans who couldn’t afford it themselves.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — New England quarterback Tom Brady has earned his 200th victory to tie Peyton Manning for the most by an NFL quarterback. Brady caught Manning by hitting Malcolm Mitchell for an eight-yard TD with 1:56 remaining in the Patriots’ 22-17 comeback over the Jets. Brady was 30 of 50 for 286 yards and no interceptions, with both scoring strikes going to Mitchell as the Patriots improved to 9-2.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Sebastien Janikowski capped Oakland’s comeback by drilling a 23-yard field goal with 1:45 left in a 35-32 win against Carolina. Derek Carr threw for 315 yards and two touchdowns despite missing a series with an injured pinky on his passing hand. The Raiders managed to improve to 9-2 after the 5-6 Panthers scored the first 25 points in the second half to go ahead by seven.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — The Seahawks had won three straight before the Buccaneers held them to 245 total yards in a 14-5 win over Seattle. The Bucs did their scoring on first-quarter touchdown passes by Jameis Winston to Mike Evans. Russell Wilson ran for 80 yards on eight carries but was just 17 of 33 for 151 yards and two interceptions as the Seahawks dropped to 7-3-1.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Kyrie Irving delivered 19 of his season-high 39 points while Cleveland was outscoring the 76ers 35-27 in the fourth quarter of a 112-108 comeback at Philadelphia. Blake Griffin had 16 points and nine rebounds for the Clippers, who shot just 31 percent from the floor and were 4-for-24 on 3-point attempts in falling to 14-4.

Chiefs beat Broncos 30-27 in overtime

DENVER (AP) — Cairo Santos’ 34-yard field goal hit the left upright and bounced through as the overtime period expired Sunday night to give the Kansas Chiefs a 30-27 victory over the Denver Broncos on Sunday night. That avoided the third tie in the NFL this season, something that hasn’t happened since 1973 before the league introduced overtime.

The winner followed a risky move by Broncos coach Gary Kubiak, who sent his kicker out for a 62-yard try with 1:01 left only to see Brandon McManus — who has hit from 70 yards in training camp — come up short. McManus practically begged to get a crack at the 62-yarder.

“That’s still well within my range. I just kind of hit the ground,” he said. “From that distance, everything kind of needs to be perfect just because of how far you are away. It didn’t happen for me.”

Instead of having to go 80 yards or more, however, the Chiefs got the ball at the Denver 48 with one timeout and just over a minute remaining. The Chiefs reached the Denver 16 before Santos ended the snoozer-turned-thriller in perfect fashion. Even his teammates hesitated as they ran out to celebrate, unsure if the ball had clanked through or not with the stadium rocking as if it hadn’t.

The Chiefs (8-3) kept up with the Oakland Raiders (9-2) in the AFC West race and the Broncos (7-4) could find themselves fighting for a wild card now.

Up next for Kansas City: The Chiefs continue a brutal road swing with a trip to Atlanta next weekend.

Invasive mussels found near Council Bluffs water plant

News

November 27th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) — Council Bluffs officials are trying to determine how far invasive zebra mussels have spread from one of the basins where the city draws drinking water from. The Daily Nonpareil reports the mussels were found during maintenance this fall, but it’s not clear if they have begun to colonize and clog the pipes leading into the city’s water treatment plant.

Water Works CEO and General Manager Doug Drummey says the zebra mussels don’t threaten water quality, but they can require costly repairs to clear pipes. The invasive mussels reproduce quickly and then attach themselves to hard surfaces. Drummey says most of the mussels found in September died because the water level was lowered for maintenance. But the pipes leading into the pond will be inspected this month.

No. 19 West Virginia rolls past Iowa State 49-19

Sports

November 27th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

AMES, Iowa (AP) – Skyler Howard threw for 330 yards and tied a career high with five touchdowns and No. 19 West Virginia rolled past Iowa State 49-19 on Saturday.
Freshman Martell Pettaway burned his redshirt and ran for 181 yards in his debut for the Mountaineers (9-2, 6-2 Big 12), who outscored Iowa State 28-3 in the second half.

Howard’s 71-yard TD toss to Shelton Gibson and Pettaway’s 4-yard touchdown run, the first of his career, made it 35-19 late in the third quarter. Gibson followed with a 40-yard TD catch to give West Virginia to 23-point cushion. Justin Crawford, who ran for 331 yards against Oklahoma last week, was replaced by Pettaway after two series.

Kene Nwangwu had a 97-yard kickoff return for a touchdown and Cole Netten kicked four field goals to lead Iowa State (3-9, 2-7). But settling for three instead of converting for seven points – and losing the turnover battle 4-0 – killed the Cyclones chances. Jacob Park threw for 371 yards and David Montgomery ran for 141 yards for Iowa State.

The improvement the Cyclones made from September to November was impressive, even though the game snowballed out of control Saturday. It figured to take a few years for Iowa State to become respectable in the Big 12. With a full offseason, a year of conference play under his belt and an emerging quarterback in Park, young coach Matt Campbell might get the Cyclones near bowl contention in 2017.
