Atlantic hosts Glenwood in Doubleheader tonight on KJAN

Sports

December 13th, 2016 by admin

The Atlantic Trojans will play host to the Glenwood Rams for a Varsity Basketball Doubleheader tonight and we’ll have coverage on KJAN. The Girls game is set to start at 6:00pm with the Boys to follow around 7:30pm.

The Girls game will feature two teams that have struggled on the young season. The Trojans are 0-5 after a loss on the road at Creston this past Friday. The Trojans haven’t been able to find consistent offensive production, averaging just 47 points per game so far.  Another issue has been turnovers as Atlantic has 95 on the season compared to just 25 assists. Catherine Leonard leads the team in scoring averaging 10 points per game and Baylee Newell has averaged 9.  Glenwood has shared many of the same struggles in their 0-5 start. The Rams are averaging just 36 points per game and have 97 turnovers compared to 34 assists. Nikkie Schuppan leads Glenwood with 9 points per game.

The Boys game is a highly anticipated match-up of highly ranked squads that had three intense games last season. Atlantic comes in ranked 5th in the new Class 3A poll and Glenwood received votes for the top 10. Atlantic is averaging 70 points per game in their 4-0 start. Garrett Franken is averaging 25 points per game while post player Scott Leonard is averaging 15.  Glenwood is off to a 3-1 start and have averaged 63 points per game. The Rams are led by Andrew Blum with 22 points per outing and Nate Mohr with 20.  The teams split in the regular season last year but Glenwood won the rubber match in a District Final after rallying from 20 points down at half to win by 2.

We’ll have coverage of both games tonight on AM1220, FM101.1, online at kjan.com and on the KJAN mobile app. You can also catch live streaming video on KJANTV.  Coverage will begin at about 5:50pm, just prior to the start of the Girls game.

Public hearing in Atlantic Wed. morning, re: Ethanol plant development agreement

News

December 13th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

A public hearing will be held Wednesday morning at the courthouse in Atlantic, with regard to a proposed development agreement between Cass County and Elite Octane, LLC, the company that wants to build an ethanol plant on the northern edge of Atlantic. The hearing takes place at the 9-a.m., during the Cass County Board of Supervisor’s meeting that begins at 8:30-a.m. in their boardroom at the courthouse.

Last Wednesday, the Board said the hearing would be contingent upon lawyers for both the County and Elite Octane reaching an agreement on the County’s financial obligation to help make the plant possible. On Friday, Nick Bowdish (B’oh-dish), President and CEO of N Bowdish Company, LLC, issued a press release saying their new proposal provides for new infrastructure to be completed in Cass County that will be paid for entirely by property taxes generated by Elite Octane.  Bowdish said at the completion of the proposed project, Cass County will have an additional two and a half miles of newly paved roads that should help facilitate development of the area surrounding the proposed plant.

The proposal says…based on a full assessment of $32-million…an annual tax payment of just under than $911, 500 would be made from Elite Octane to the County. It assumes 15-years of tax payments amounting to more than $13.6-million. If the assessment exceeds $32-million over the 15-years, Cass County would rebate 100% of the incremental tax payment dollars that Elite Octane incurs, if more than $911,497. If at any time during the fifteen years the actual assessment is less than $32,000,000, Elite Octane would be be held to a minimum assessment of $32,000,000.

The annual tax payments would begin on Sept. 1st, 2020, and by March 1st, 2021 would cover the debt payment Cass County incurs on infrastructure improvements intended specifically for the ethanol plant project. The annual Cass County debt payment for the infrastructure is estimated at $430,000 per year.

Prior to the public hearing, the Board will discuss the latest proposal. After the hearing, they’re expected to act on a Resolution approving the Development Agreement with Elite Octane.

Waterloo Deere plant marks production of 2 million engines

Ag/Outdoor

December 13th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) – A John Deere plant in Waterloo is celebrating the milestone of building 2 million engines. The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reports the plant built engine number 2 million last month and marked the achievement Monday as it completed the assembly of a tractor powered by the engine. Deere’s Waterloo engine plant began production 40 years ago.

Kenny Hager, a Cedar Falls resident who has worked at Deere for 20 years, says the milestone is as important to his union, the United Auto Workers Local 838, as it is to the company. Hager called it “a really neat thing, because it’s big for the community.”
