Atkins scores 25 points to lead No. 16 Texas women

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Ariel Atkins scored a career-high 25 points, including a 3-pointer to give No. 16 Texas the lead for good, in a 75-68 win over Iowa State on Sunday for the Longhorns’ sixth straight win.

Atkins’ 3-pointer gave the Longhorns (8-4, 2-0 Big 12) a two-point lead and began a 9-0 run she capped with a bucket for a 68-60 edge with a minute left. Seanna Johnson made three free throws to cut it to 71-68 and Iowa State got the ball back on a travel but turned it over on the inbounds pass. Atkins added two free throws and Brianna Taylor followed with a steal.

Kelsey Lang added 11 points and 12 rebounds for Texas, though the Longhorns were beaten on the boards, 36-34, for the first time this season. Jadda Buckley scored 19 points with seven assists and Johnson added 17 points and nine rebounds for the Cyclones (9-4, 0-2).

Des Moines police investigate fatal nightclub shooting

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Des Moines Police are investigating the death of an 18-year-old man who was fatally shot in a dispute at a downtown nightclub. Police were called to the Des Moines nightclub around 3:30 a.m. Sunday to investigate the altercation.

Police Sgt. Paul Parizek says 18-year-old Frederico Thompson, Jr., of Des Moines, died at the nightclub after he was shot. The shooting is Des Moines’ first homicide of 2017.

Here are the weather stats for Atlantic as we end December and enter January: The Average High temperature in December (recorded at the KJAN Studios, the official National Weather Service site for Atlantic), was 33.9 degrees, which was one-degree warmer than the normal, average high for the month. The average Low was 14.1, which was slightly cooler than the norm of 14.4. The warmest day was on Dec. 25th, when we reached 53 degrees. The low was -17 on the 17th.

Precipitation for the month (melted snow, and rain) amounted to 1.35 inches, which was greater than the 1.11″ average. Snowfall for the month was 1.6 inches. Looking ahead to January, the normal High for the month averages out to 29 degrees, while the normal Low is 19. Precipitation in January usually amounts to just under an inch (.84″).

Total precipitation for 2016 in Atlantic amounted to 42.75 inches. The normal annual precipitation is 34.94.”

Shooting early Sunday morning in Council Bluffs

Police in Council Bluffs are investigation a shooting incident that took place early this (Sunday) morning. Just after 1-a.m., officers were dispatched to the Underground Bar (28 So 29th St, Council Bluffs, IA) for a disturbance involving approximately 20 people in the parking lot.

As officers were responding to the call they were advised shots had been fired and a person had possibly been hit. Upon officers arrival they made contact with one of the security guards who had sustained a gunshot wound to his back. The 20-year old from Omaha was transported by rescue squad to Creighton University Medical Center. His injuries are not believed to be life threatening at this time.

The case remains an open investigation. Anyone with information is urged to call Crime Stoppers (712) 328- 7867 or the Council Bluffs Police Department Criminal Investigation Division (712) 328-4728.

Arrest and accident Saturday night in Red Oak

Police in Red Oak arrested one person Saturday night and investigated a hit-and-run accident. Officials say 26-year old Devon Leigh Miller, of Clarinda, was arrested at around 10:30-p.m. for Driving While Suspended (A simple misdemeanor). Miller was transported to the Montgomery County Law Enforcement Center, where she was being held on a $300 bond.

And, Red Oak Police say a 2010 Ford Mustang belonging to Janet Norris, of Red Oak, was legally parked in the 1000 block of Miler Avenue, when it was struck on the rear driver’s side by an unknown vehicle. The damage amounted to approximately $2500. The accident, which happened sometime before 8-p.m., remains under investigation.

ATLANTA (AP) — Top-ranked and unbeaten Alabama is in the national championship game after scoring 10 points off turnovers in a 24-7 win over No. 4 Washington in the Peach Bowl. Bo Scarborough carried the Tide’s offense by running for 180 yards and two touchdowns to earn game MVP honors. Ryan Anderson returned an interception 26 yards for a touchdown late in the first half to help Alabama improve to 14-0 heading into its title game against Clemson.

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — DeShaun Watson ran for two touchdowns and threw for another as Clemson blasted Ohio State, 31-0 to advance to the national championship game. Watson was 23 of 36 for 259 yards and two interceptions before taking a seat on the bench with five minutes left in the fourth quarter. He also had 57 yards rushing for the Tigers, who scored in each quarter and held the Buckeyes to 215 total yards and nine first downs.

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — The Columbus Blue Jackets have tied the second-longest winning streak in NHL history by downing the Wild, 4-2 in Minnesota. Cam Atkinson scored twice while Columbus built a 3-0 lead en route to its 15th consecutive win, two away from the all-time record set by the 1992-93 Penguins. The outcome also ends the Wild’s team-record, 12-game winning streak.

HOUSTON (AP) — James Harden torched the Knicks for 53 points, 17 assists and 16 rebounds to highlight Houston’s 129-122 victory. Harden set career highs for points and 3-pointers with nine, and matched his career best for assists in his second consecutive triple-double. Ryan Anderson added 25 points for the Rockets, who have won four in a row and finished December 15-2 to tie a club record for wins in a single month.

UNDATED (AP) — Saturday’s college basketball schedule included three upsets in the ACC. Justin Bibbs drained four 3-pointers while scoring 18 points to lead Virginia Tech’s 89-75 win against fifth-ranked Duke. Josh Okogie scored 26 points and Ben Lammers had 11 and 11 rebounds in the Yellow Jackets’ 75-63 triumph over ninth-ranked North Carolina, and Dwayne Bacon scored 26 of his 39 points in the second half to lead 20th-rated Florida State past No. 12 Virginia, 60-58.

Des Moines’ based UnityPoint Health has released a list of the top baby names for 2016. Nearly 5,000 babies were born in 2016 at three hospitals in the Des Moines area under the UnityPoint Health banner. UnityPoint has released a list of the most popular names given to those newborns. The top girl names in 2016 were Olivia, Lilly, Norah, Sophie, and Charlotte. The most popular names for boys were Jack or Jackson, Henry, Oliver, William, and Owen.

ISP: Seat belt saves the life of a Madison County teen

Officials with the Iowa State Patrol says a Madison County teen’s life was saved by the use of her seat belt, Saturday night. 16-year old Arianna Snell, of St. Charles, was driving a 2012 Toyota Prius westbound on the Truro blacktop road, about two-miles east of Interstate 35, when the car went out of control on a curve where the blacktop meets the gravel on the road.

The car rolled several times before coming to rest in a ditch. The accident happened at around 7:50-p.m., Saturday. Snell was transported by New Virginia Rescue to Mercy West Hospital in Des Moines. There was no report on her condition.
