MIAMI (AP) — Cardinals ace Carlos Martinez drove in four runs, compensating for the two homers he gave up to Marcell Ozuna and leading St. Louis over the Miami Marlins 9-4 Monday night for their season-best fourth straight win.

Martinez (2-3) came into the game hitless this year. He hit a two-out, three-run double off Adam Conley in the second inning and singled home a run in the fourth. Martinez struck out seven in six innings. Miguel Socolovich pitched three innings to earn his first career save.

Miami’s Giancarlo Stanton hit his 11th homer in the ninth, his third shot in two days. Ozuna also has 11 homers. Matt Carpenter had a two-run triple for the Cardinals. Teammate Magneuris Sierra, recalled Sunday from Single-A Palm Beach, contributed two hits and scored twice.

Marlins manager Don Mattingly was ejected for arguing balls and strikes after Martinez struck out the side in the second. Conley (2-3) allowed seven runs in 3 2/3 innings.

Kaleb said his father gave him a “sense of respect” and taught him many skills.

A little levity was added, as Kaleb thanked his father for taking him to Hooters for his tenth birthday. Burbridge’s daughter Karley also shared some thoughts on her father.

While her father was a hero to the community, Karley said he was also her personal hero.

Burbridge was shot and killed last Monday by an inmate who escaped the jail in Council Bluffs before being captured in Omaha. Burbridge was a 12-year veteran of the sheriff’s department. (Radio Iowa w/thanks to Karla James in Omaha)

Atlantic Head Coach Ed DenBeste:

“This was a great win for our boys golf team.  Not sure that we played as well as we wanted but good to see us keep it together and battle with the wind today.  I like that Jake was runner-up medalist.  He had gotten back to 4 over and had a tough hole 8 where he hit a great shot and it rolled off the back.  He parred it but then boogied nine to stay at 5 over.  Ben had a good round going and lost some strokes but good to finish under 80.  Both Jake and Ben are 1st team all conference.  Matt and Zac had to battle today.  Nate is playing pretty consistent right now.  Good to see him have a score that counted.  Cyle has some struggles today.  Hope that he can learn and bounce back.  I think the lost ball on hole 3 turned the game for him today.

Great to see my first conference title as coach in Atlantic.  Proud of these boys and their season up until now.  We need to keep working on our games to enter post season.”

Huge sinkholes are now appearing in the wrong places

News

May 8th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

FRASER, Mich. (AP) — Huge sinkholes that opened last week on streets in New York City, suburban Atlanta and San Francisco exemplify a phenomenon that is prompting growing alarm across the U.S., including Iowa.

Sudden-appearing caverns are happening in places where they once were rare. Unlike most earthen collapses in the past, the new cave-ins are being caused by crumbling water and sewer pipes rather than unstable geology.

A review by The Associated Press of recent media coverage showed that sinkholes related to failing infrastructure occurred at a rate of one every four days in places as varied as Chicago, Los Angeles, Hoboken, New Jersey, Sioux City, Iowa, and Seattle.

A San Antonio woman died in December when she drove into a sinkhole that opened when a sewer line ruptured.

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) – The western Iowa sheriff’s deputy who was killed during a jail escape was remembered today (Monday) for the way he treated everyone with respect. Hundreds of law enforcement officers filled the floor of an arena Monday in Council Bluffs to honor Pottawattamie County Deputy Mark Burbridge.

Burbridge was fatally wounded last Monday when an inmate returning from court grabbed a gun and shot Burbridge and another deputy. He was captured after a police chase in Omaha.

Burbridge’s three children shared memories of him and his regular trips to auto parts stores so he could fix up his beloved classic cars.  Daughter Karley Burbridge says her dad was her hero not just for his work protecting the community but also for protecting her from the monsters under her bed.
